Jessica Rabbit Syndrome took the stage for the first time in May at Waking Windows 2017. The duo was draped in black sequins and unleashed sludgy garage rock laden with an air of overcast, glamorous doom. The group now possess the power of three: Ali Evans on guitar; Amy Wild on drums and Cate Tobin on bass. Based between Burlington and Boston, Mass., the band's aesthetic reflects a fondness for Riot Grrrl, hanging out in graveyards and Simon Hanselmann's illustrated stoner witch Megg . After just a few months of playing shows, the trio has released a couple of online tracks for the goths out there having a bummer summer. "Vocal Fry" has all the vocal attitude of Bratmobile and the Raincoats. Wild's confident kick drum lays down a hard beat under Evans' nonchalant chord progressions and Tobin's shoegazing bassline. With lyrics about the sharp feminine wit — and a head bobbing breakdown towards the end — this track is equally catchy and gritty. With lines such as "I surrender / Winter bender / Hold me down / Return to sender," seasonal mental slush is cast out with dark humor on "Winter Bender." The track opens with ambient drones that shiver like winter wind. Evans' distorted riffs groan over downtempo drums while minimal bass notes pulse in the back of the mix.
