1991 Baseball Checklist Card – Sully Baseball Card of the Day for December 31, 2017

Perhaps it is appropriate that we end the year with the checklist. Opening a pack of Baseball cards and getting the checklist was always an awful feeling. Take a look at this watch Mark Buehrle gave White Sox teammates and staff after his first no-hitter

Source: thecomeback.com --- Saturday, December 30, 2017
Getting a no-hitter is one of the greatest achievements for a Baseball pitcher. For Mark Buehrle, he has the distinction of not only pitching a no-hitter but did one better pitching a perfect game. Players react to celebrating these achievements differently. For Buehrle, we learned that he wanted to reward those on the White Sox for helping him achieve Baseball immortality. Because if not for them, a no-hitter doesn’t happen. Reddit user jpjtourdiary posted about meeting up with a retired equipment manager for the White Sox and seeing his watch that was given by Buehrle. The watch was black with a gold edge and has “Buehrle” as well as “No-Hitter” “4-18-07.” Source: jpjtourdiary on Reddit That’s a rather nice gesture for Buehrle to give to his teammates. These aren’t Rolex’s or anything but to pay for dozens of watches, that has to cost a bit. But it was well worth it and great appreciation for those who also deserve credit for this achievement. The person who posted the pic also said that when Buehrle pitched his perfect game in 2009, Buehrle gave each person on the team a bottle of Crown Royal XR in personalized bags which is one of Crown Royal’s rarest and most expensive liquors. Very classy moves. [ jpjtourdiary ] The post Take a look at this watch Mark Buehrle gave White Sox teammates and staff after his first no-hitter appeared first on The Comeback . ...

Baseball legend reveals the major ‘sin’ about Barry Bonds’ Hall of Fame candidacy

Source: www.thewildcard.com --- Saturday, December 30, 2017
The Baseball Hall of Fame is one of the most cherished and talked-about institutions in sports. It is surrounded in controversy every year when voters decide whether players who took steroids should forever be enshrined in Cooperstown, New York. The issue has even divided the sport’s greatest players. In November, Hall of Famer Joe Morgan made public letters he had written to voters begging them not to let steroid users into Cooperstown. “They cheated,” wrote Morgan, a 1990 inductee . “Steroid users don’t belong here.” Now another Hall of Famer has offered a different point of view. MLB legend Willie McCovey, the man for whom San Francisco’s McCovey Cove is named, believes fellow Giant Barry Bonds should be in the Hall of Fame. “I just think it’s a sin he’s not in there,” McCovey told the San Francisco Chronicle . “If anybody deserves to be in the Hall of Fame, it’s Barry. You talk to anybody who played against him at that time, they’ll say he was the best hitter they ever saw in their lives.” Bonds holds the single-season (73) and all-time home run (762) records in Major League Baseball. He also has the records for most walks (2,558) and most intentional walks (688) in a career. Bonds’ records are often seen as tainted because of his alleged steroid use, although it was never fully proven. If not for the steroid issue, he would be a lock for the Hall of Fame. It seems as if Bonds’ chances to make it to Cooperstown are improving ...

How Much Has To “Break Right” For A’s To Compete?

Source: http://ift.tt/IsN8HP --- Saturday, December 30, 2017
Given the vast amount of variance in Baseball, most teams enter spring training with at least the gift of hope, along with the spectre that fortunes could fall apart quickly. Sure if you’re the Astros, mostly you just have to show up and stay somewhat healthy and if you’re the Marlins you’re saying, “Well, you know if...yeah, no.” Then there are the rest of us, hoping this is the year “everything breaks right” and wondering how far that can get us. Realistically, not everything will. In the case of the rebuilding A’s, with much raw talent in Oakland and on the way, how much has to fall into place for Oakland to be competitive. Let’s set the bar at “over .500,” which translates in this day and age to contending for a wild card spot right down to the finish line. My goal here to be realistic and fair, not to allow every young player to breakout at the same time or for the team to enjoy uninterrupted health all season. Here’s what I would suggest is the blueprint for a competitive season with the group currently assembled: Overall, this team has a chance to be pretty good on offense and defense, which would allow them to compete with just a decent and stable rotation top to bottom. That’s probably the best the A’s can hope for and it may be attainable. Sean Manaea & Kendall Graveman I think the A’s just need these two to stay healthy and anchor the rotation throughout the season. Manaea may not be an ace, and Graveman will likely s ...

Oregon Ducks Year in Review: Freshman Soar but Oregon Baseball’s Dreams of Nebraska Strike Out

Source: http://ift.tt/yzOdEf --- Saturday, December 30, 2017
Oregon ended their 2016 Baseball season with a 29-26 record, fueling their determination to prove their competitiveness and earn a spot in the 2017 College World Series. At the beginning of the 2017 season, the Ducks were picked to finish 8th in the Pac-12 preseason coaches poll, but as the season began, it became very evident that the identity of the team was unknown. Oregon welcomed many newcomers, one notable freshman being pitcher James Acuna who won his first game against Fresno State. The Ducks managed an eight game winning streak, which included a series sweep versus Santa Clara, but their streak was snapped with their loss to Cal in the series finale. After Cal, Oregon fell short in the series finale to Washington and struggled in a 1-2 series with Utah. While offensively the Ducks continued to build, struggles were still alive through the remainder of conference games, including their series with Arizona, Stanford, Arizona State, Oregon State, Washington State, USC and UCLA. Oregon finished with a 12-18 conference record and a 30-25 overall record, but Coach Horton earned his 300th win as the head coach of Oregon Baseball, along with his 800th career victory as a Division I coach. During the draft, junior left-hander David Peterson became Oregon’s first player drafted in the first round since 2011 when the New York Mets picked him up. College Baseball Countdown: 48 Days to Go- Jordan Qsar

Source: collegebaseballcentral.com --- Saturday, December 30, 2017
Jordan Qsar deserves your attention as one of the best two-players in college Baseball. Perhaps it’s because he plays in the WCC, an improving conference but certainly not among the power conferences in the country. Maybe it’s because over the last two seasons, Pepperdine hasn’t been a regional contender. Or it could be that he hasn’t really been a full-time hitter and full-time pitcher at the same time throughout his career, as many of the top two-way players in the country often are. Whatever the reason, Qsar doesn’t get mentioned in the same breath as some of the more notable two-way players in college Baseball, but he probably should be, and taking another step forward in 2018 could go a long way toward getting the Waves back into the postseason. The 2015 season, the last time Pepperdine got into a regional, was perhaps Qsar’s most consistent in terms of his combined production between the batter’s box and the mound. At the plate, he had a small role, but he was effective in the chances he received. He appeared in 23 games, 20 of which he started. He hit .319/.417/.488 with six doubles, two homers, and was a perfect 4-for-4 in stolen bases. The rate stats speak for themselves, and in a little over one-third of a full season, those totals aren’t bad either. On the mound, he was solid as a short reliever. He appeared in 19 games, throwing 23 innings with a 3.52 ERA and a 15/7 strikeout-to-walk ratio. In what would have been hi ...

The Cardinals should lead the next baseball revolution

Source: www.vivaelbirdos.com --- Saturday, December 30, 2017
St. Louis' roster lends itself well to doing away with the prototypical starting pitcher. If you challenge conventional wisdom, you will find ways to do things much better than they are currently done. –Bill James By all accounts, Baseball is a game of cat and mouse. One doesn't need to look beyond the most recently played Major League game to prove this–Game Seven of the 2017 World Series . The 101-win Astros rolled past the Dodgers for a 5-1 victory and their first ever championship. The title was the culmination of a rebuild spearheaded by Houston's GM Jeff Luhnow. The former Cardinals scouting director and his brain trust may have inherited key pieces such as Dallas Keuchel , Jose Altuve , and George Springer , but the Astros' teardown as they sank to the bottom of the standings allowed them to net the top draft picks that helped restock their farm system. Carlos Correa , Alex Bregman , Derek Fisher , and Lance McCullers were among the players Luhnow and Co. drafted. They also selected top prospects like Daz Cameron and Mark Appel that were parlayed into acquisitions including Justin Verlander and Ken Giles . The tanking model employed by the Astros as well as the 2016 World Series champions (who we will not refer to by name on this sacred website that is vivaelbirdos.com ) has caught on, with numerous other franchises choosing to hop on the bandwagon. This all cuts into a deeper, larger-scale trend across the sport. A youth ...

Washington Nationals: 3 prospects to watch

Source: http://ift.tt/KGD68D --- Saturday, December 30, 2017
We all know about Victor Robles and Juan Soto. But who’s hiding a bit deeper down the prospect list? The Washington Nationals once had some of the biggest names in minor league Baseball in their farm system. Some of those names have moved on, but some, like Victor Robles , remain amongst baseball’s elite. The Top 20 is still littered with potential big league talent. Here are three you should take the time to know. Kelvin Gutierrez , 3B Gutierrez was signed out of the Dominican Republic for the 2013 season, and the story has remained the same ever since. The 23-year-old righty continues to put up stellar numbers, but continues to struggle with injuries on a yearly basis. This season Gutierrez slashed .288/.347/.414, striking out 59 times and walking 19 in the Carolina League. Problem was, thanks to ankle issues, he only played 58 games at High-A. And time is ticking a little bit faster now that he is 23. We know Gutierrez has a good swing and that he can make solid contact to all fields. He is vastly improved as a third baseman as well, once very error prone, but looking very much the part last season. He excelled early on in the Arizona Fall League, even taking home a Player of the Week honor. Our own John Sickels seems to feel there is plenty more power than his two home runs and 10 doubles speak to. A healthy season could get Gutierrez on the fast track. He may be forgotten at times, but he shouldn’t be. Raudy Read , C ...

Top stories of 2017: Scherzer wins another Cy Young

Source: www.masnsports.com --- Saturday, December 30, 2017
As we count down the final days of 2017, we're counting down the most significant stories of the year for the Nationals. Some are positive. Some are negative. All helped define this Baseball season in Washington. We'll reveal two per day through New Year's Eve, continuing right now with ... No. 3: Scherzer wins another Cy Young Seven-year contracts for pitchers are supposed to be dangerous. Few have ever worked out as initially hoped. Max Scherzer still has four years remaining on his seven-year, $210 million deal with the Nationals . But three years in, you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone who isn't thrilled with the result. Scherzer has been everything the Nats could have asked for - and more. And his latest season in D.C. may well have been his best. Despite a variety of nagging ailments along the way, he went 16-6 with a career-best 2.51 ERA and 0.902 WHIP. In the process, he won his second consecutive Cy Young Award and third of his career. How significant is that? Well, Scherzer is only the 10th pitcher in Baseball history to win the Cy Young three times. Seven of the others (Randy Johnson, Steve Carlton, Pedro Martinez, Greg Maddux, Sandy Koufax, Tom Seaver and Jim Palmer) are in the Hall of Fame. The eighth, Clayton Kershaw, will join them in Cooperstown some day. And the ninth, Roger Clemens, would already be enshrined if not for allegations of steroids use. Scherzer can't pose for any bronze plaques just yet. He still ...

Off Topic Post: New Years Resolutions

Source: http://ift.tt/1kegiii --- Saturday, December 30, 2017
Tells us about your 2018 New Year’s Resolutions, Baseball related or not. We are coming to the end of 2017. It’s been an interesting year. For Blue Jays ’ fans it didn’t go as expected. On the non-Baseball side, there has been some good (that woman feel like that can come out and say when they have been mistreated is a big site forward) and a lot of bad (almost everything else). With the end of the year, we get some self reflection time, so I thought I’d ask what you are thinking for New Year’s resolutions. Personally: The obvious one: I didn’t get to see a Blue Jays game live this year. I was lucky, we had a couple of very nice holidays, both to Europe and there wasn’t time/money for a Baseball trip. I’ve had at least one Baseball trip, each season, for the past nine years. I missed it this year. So something will be done about that. I’m thinking of going to the Jays series in Seattle in early August. Seattle is fun city to visit. The boring one: I’m going to try to get into shape. Last year I rode in a 2-day, 200k, charity bike ride and I didn’t do well. Some of it was that I had a bike that wasn’t built for riding that far, so I’ve bought a bike that is built for that. Some of it was that....the first day was into a strong wind, which made the biking tough, especially for the last 20k or so. The only thing that go me to the end was the thought that ‘tomorrow this wind will be at my back’. The next day the wind shifted so we w ...

How a Star Trek card game quietly continues, 10 years after its official end

Source: arstechnica.com --- Saturday, December 30, 2017
(video link) Earlier this year, I was back at my childhood home in Southern California, digging through some old boxes. Amidst assorted Baseball cards, long-forgotten school projects, sports trophies, and more, I located a small, slender white cardboard box. The box is unmarked, except for a small sticker in the top left-hand corner with my name on it. But I knew what it was the instant I saw it: my entire collection of Star Trek Customizable Card Game (STCCG) , probably a couple hundred cards in total. Top stories of 2017: Strasburg steps up

NO. 4: STRASBURG STEPS UP Through the first seven seasons of his big league career, Stephen Strasburg seemed to be noted more for what he hadn't accomplished than for what he had done on the mound. He had all the talent in the world, but he too often was injured. He made only one postseason start despite three playoff appearances by the Nationals. He was very good, but never great when his team really needed him. This might well have been the season in which Strasburg changed that narrative, though, culminating with his pair of brilliant starts in October. By any measure, this was the best season of the right-hander's career. His 2.52 ERA dwarfed his mark from any previous season (with the exception of his five-start, post-Tommy John surgery return in 2011). His 1.015 WHIP also was his best since that abbreviated 2011 campaign. And he was recognized for his efforts by being named a Cy Young Award finalist for the first time. (He wound up finishing third behind teammate Max Scherzer and Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw.) The only real black mark on Strasburg's season was his four-week stint on the disabled list in late summer due to a nerve impinge ...

The Best of 2017 on ’80s Baseball

Source: www.80sbaseball.com --- Friday, December 29, 2017
I started this blog at the beginning of 2016 as a companion to a book I was writing. I’m happy to say the book is finished and should be out at some point in the summer of 2018. I didn’t post on the blog nearly as much as I wanted to this year because I was finishing my manuscript, but these are the most popular articles. Number 5: A Discussion with Tim Carroll   Tim Carroll takes old Baseball cards and cuts them up to create amazing pieces of art. I had a chance to talk to Tim about his art and how he takes “junk cards” and repurposes them.   Number 4: Mark Fidrych Roundtable This was one of my favorites. I had the great honor of talking to authors Dan Epstein and Doug Wilson about The Bird, his career, and his legacy. This was a two-part post. The second part is linked to at the bottom of part one.     Number 3: Dream Season: George Brett In 2017, I began taking individual players’ best months and combining them into one “super season.” If you take George Brett’s best April, May, etc and put them together, it’s pretty impressive.   Number 2: The Quest for Razor Shines Razor Shines spent much of his professional career playing for the AAA Indianapolis Indians. Author Nate Dunlevy spent way too much time and way too much money to recreate one of his jerseys. It was totally worth it.       Number 1: Cecil Cooper and the Forgotten Summer of 1980 Cecil Cooper had an amazing season for the Brewers in 1980. Unfortunately for Coop, ve ...

Lets check in with mlb.com Nats beat reporter Jamal Collier, who posted a mailbag today on 12/28/17 .   Q: What’s the impact of the Stanton to Yankees on Bryce’s next deal and potential for remaining with Nats? A: I think its significant, and combined with a couple of other factors may actually help convince Bryce Harper to stay put. First, the players union focused all its efforts on the Qualifying Offer in the most recent CBA negotiations and gave up a huge concession in form of the luxury tax implementation. Now, it isn’t a “salary cap” but it sure is acting like it. When your biggest spenders (Yankees and Dodgers) are playing payroll games in order to get under neath the threshold … its serving as a defacto cap. And it should be noted the Union did not get a corresponding “floor” … meaning that team after team will be punting on seasons ala Houston and Chicago and not spending money, thus bringing the FA spending down. This situation will only continue into next off-season, which is setup to be the greatest Free Agency bonanza ever. But are all these 2018 FAs fooling themselves into thinking they’re going to get the ...

The Yankees aren’t worrying about negative regression in 2018

Source: http://ift.tt/tjP2I3 --- Friday, December 29, 2017
With any luck, the team’s two best players will be as good or better next season One of the favorite offseason pastimes of Baseball fans and pundits is to speculate about negative regression; that is, the expected drop in production for various players. With the two best players on the 2017 Yankees - Luis Severino and Aaron Judge - coming off breakout seasons, it’s proven popular for people to speculate about their 2018 campaigns. Many believe the two young superstars are due for a dip in performance. Certain players, and more importantly certain patterns, are largely regression proof, though. If either Judge or Sevy relied on luck or results-based approaches to hitting and pitching, they’d be prime candidates to drop off a bit in 2018. Instead, they count on positive processes to produce, and that kind of approach is what makes them such great candidates to repeat their success next season. Let’s start with Aaron Judge. For all his prodigious power, Judge’s best asset is his eye. Leading Baseball in walks while setting the all time rookie record for base on balls, Judge finished third in all of Baseball in OBP. He finished behind only Joey Votto and Mike Trout , arguably the two best bats of this generation and certainly the most patient. Even in Judge’s well-publicized slump in August, he reached base at a .353 clip, 30 basis points better than league average. This is important as on-base percentage, walk rates and other hallm ...

I'm going to go in chronological order from the first cards produced to the most recent. Rockies designate Shane Carle for assignment

Source: www.purplerow.com --- Friday, December 29, 2017
The Rockies needed the roster spot for Wade Davis The Rockies have designated right-handed reliever Shane Carle for assignment, according to Major League Baseball. The move comes after the Rockies officially announced the signing of closer Wade Davis . The team had a full 40-man roster, and the addition of Davis required somebody be removed. The Rockies added Carle to the 40-man roster prior to the 2017 season to protect him from being taken in the Rule 5 draft. He only pitched four major-league innings, however. Carle, 26, spent most of the season in Triple-A, where he posted a 5.37 ERA in 62 innings pitched. The Rockies now have a seven-day window in which they have to either trade Carle or be place him on waivers. If he goes on waivers and somebody claims him, he belongs to that team. If nobody claims him, the Rockies can either release Carle or outright him to the minor-leagues. Carle was only likely to play an emergency relief role for the Rockies in 2018, and he could very well still be in that role if he passes through waivers and the team chooses to keep him in the system. ...

New Years Weekend Open Thread

2017 is almost over, folks. It was a fun year in Baseball. Everything else? Well, that’s a topic for another blog. Come Monday we’ll be in 2018 and only six weeks away from the start of Spring Training . Hooray for that. Anyway, I wrote a thing at CBS about players who would’ve been free agents this offseason had they not signed long-term extensions . Mike Trout! Jose Altuve! Paul Goldschmidt! Could’ve been a fun free agent class. Alas. Also, here again is Richard Deitsch’s collection of the top stories of 2017 . There’s plenty of everything in there. Sports, science, crime, politics, you name it. Check it out and read what you like. Here’s an open thread for final weekend of 2017. Talk about anything here other than religion or politics. You know the routine. The post New Years Weekend Open Thread appeared first on River Avenue Blues . ...

Top stories of 2017: Werth's farewell

As we count down the final days of 2017, we're counting down the most significant stories of the year for the Nationals. Some are positive. Some are negative. All helped define this Baseball season in Washington. We'll reveal two per day through New Year's Eve, continuing right now with ... No. 5: Jayson Werth's farewell "LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - It's a rare day indeed, when the Washington Nationals make a move that shakes up the entire Baseball world. "This is a franchise that for the better part of six years has existed on the periphery of the major leagues, content to build its franchise through draft picks and second-tier acquisitions, leaving the headlines to its counterparts in New York and Boston and Chicago and Philadelphia and Los Angeles. "So when word came down this afternoon that the Nationals - yes, the Nationals - had signed Jayson Werth to a seven-year, $126 million - yes, seven years and $126 million - contract, the sound echoing through the Disney Swan and Dolphin Resort where the Winter Meetings are about to convene was the jaw of every member of the Baseball world dropping to the floor in unison. "So much for the Nationals staying on the periphery while everyone else makes news." - Mark Zuckerman, NatsInsider.com, Dec. 5, 2010 So much has happened with regards to Baseball in Washington over the last seven years that it's easy to forget what the state of things was on that December day in 2010 when the National ...

Milwaukee Brewers among several teams with interest in Ji-Man Choi, per report

Source: www.brewcrewball.com --- Friday, December 29, 2017
He’s appeared in the big leagues with the Angels and Yankees in the last two years. It’s been a slow-moving offseason for most of the teams around Major League Baseball, and our beloved Milwaukee Brewers can certainly be included in that mix. Various rumors have floated around the franchise for the last few months but for the time being, the most notable transaction they’ve completed is the $15.5 mil deal given to Jhoulys Chacin. The front office hasn’t made our heads spin the same way they did during the first two winters of the David Stearns regime; we haven’t been treated to the frenetic series of waiver claims, trades, and minor league free agent signings that we’ve become accustomed to this time of year. At this point, we’ll gladly take any tidbit of news about our local nine that we can get. So... According to the Yonhap News Agency out of South Korea, 26 year old Incheon native Ji-Man Choi has received more than a dozen contract offers from teams around the league. Per Choi’s representatives, the interested parties are reportedly the Yankees, Angels, Rays, Athletics, Marlins, Cubs, Reds, Orioles, Twins, Braves, Blue Jays, White Sox, and our hometown Milwaukee Brewers. Hat tip for digging up this report goes to the incomparable Jim Goulart of Brewerfan.net ( @Mass_Haas on Twitter ). Choi, who turns 27 next May, signed with the Seattle Mariners as an international free agent back in 2009. He’s a very accomplished minor leag ...

2018 FANTASY BASEBALL CLOSING TIME: ROCKIES NET WADE DAVIS FOR THE NINTH

Source: http://ift.tt/1MI2gBT --- Friday, December 29, 2017
After weeks of back-and-forth negotiations, the Colorado Rockies finally sealed the deal with free agent All-Star closer Wade Davis.  Both sides came to an agreement on a contract early Friday and so Davis will now replace Greg Holland as the closer for the Rockies during the 2018 season.  In terms of what this means for fantasy Baseball, Davis will once again remain a top-tier closer who comes off another dominant campaign in 2017 when he registered a 2.30 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, and massive 12.12 K/9 for the Chicago Cubs.  Perhaps most importantly, Davis remained healthy and showed no signs of elbow trouble after some scares in 2015 and 2016.  While Davis is aging a bit at 32, he showed last season that his stuff is as overpowering as ever and he should be right there as a top-five closer in all fantasy Baseball leagues when it comes to the draft.  In the meantime, Holland will now have to look elsewhere for another chance to close and going to the Cubs is on the table.  While Holland struggled at the end of last season likely as a result of fatigue after missing all of 2016 due to Tommy John, he remains a very effective closer if he can find a ninth-inning gig somewhere.  Also while Colorado is scary, hard-throwing relievers like Davis usually do just fine there. *****PICK UP YOUR COPY OF THE FANTASY SPORTS BOSS 2018 FANTASY Baseball DRAFT GUIDE:  EARLY OFFSEASON EDITION ON AMAZON.  USE THE LINK BELOW TO PURCHASE.***** https://www.am ...

But with all of this also comes risk to our personal security. Cybercrime has been part of our lexicon for many years now as we have transformed our lives to be more and more digital. You May Knock Me Down But I Won’t Stay Down “It’s hard to beat a person who never gives up.” Babe Ruth 1895 – 1948, American Professional Baseball Player, Member of the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame As I see it. . . . . . . . You may knock me down but I won’t stay down The hardest person in the world to beat . . . . is a person who refuses to give up. When you study the top achievers . . . . they all share one common attribute. The attribute of persistence . . . . they may have to adjust . . . . but they never give up. They will not give up under pressure . . . . or when they are facing great obstacles. They will hang in just a little longer . . . . and work harder in order to achieve their objectives. When the going gets rough they refuse to give up . . . . they just keep pushing forward to achieve their goals. No matter how many challenges you face. A look back at 2017 and ahead to 2018. You guys and gals are hardcore Baseball fans if you’re here, and I appreciate that. There is close to nothing going on right now in Baseball. Go watch the NHL, NBA or do what I do, watch the English Premier League. Catch a meaningless bowl game if you must. (For god’s sake, don’t watch the NFL—especially not this weekend.) The biggest news story of the past two days is that Twins third baseman Miguel Sano has been accused of a sexual assault. He denies the charge. The Twins and MLB are investigating. Now that he’s barred from writing anything for ESPN, Jayson Stark takes to Facebook to publish his annual “Strange but true Baseball stories” for 2017. (Did anyone else read all the “Strange but True Baseball Stories” books when they were a kid? That’s where I first found out about the Merkle Boner.) Bill Baer adds his voice to those who say that the competitive balance tax is ruining the offseason. Grant Brisbee writes that the offseason is also slow because of a lack of rebuilding teams. Teams are either going for a title or they’ve already cleaned out their cupboards. One team that should be rebuilding is the Orioles , and they are reportedly still in talks with several teams to trade Manny Machado. They’re still asking a lot for one year of Machado, though. The Marlins are listening to offers for Christian Yelich and J.T. Realmuto . However, they’re also asking a lot for those two players. ...

The Top 10 Highest-Paid Baseball Players Of All Time

Source: http://ift.tt/XraR3H --- Friday, December 29, 2017
The MLB season is long and arduous, but really, it's not too bad of a gig. You get to spend some time in the sun, you only have to move occasionally, and you can actually enjoy the sights of a city on a road trip since you're there for a few nights. If you're a starting pitcher, you only have to be on top of your game once every five nights. So 80 percent of the time, you just get to relax on the sidelines. Not too shabby. On top of all of that, Baseball players get paid very well. Sure, you have to toil for years in the minor leagues, which can take a very real toll on both mind and body. But once you make it to the show you're raking in some great cash. And if you're really lucky, you can score a deal like Alex Rodriguez, who made $21 million from the Yankees last year despite not suiting up for a single game. A-Rod makes the list of the top career earners in Baseball history. Who else joins him? Spoiler alert: a lot of past and present New York Yankees are on this list. 10. Joe Mauer – $200.3 million Joe Mauer is not one of those players, though. He's spent all 14 seasons of his career with the Minnesota Twins. He's had a very productive career, making six All-Star appearances and even winning the AL MVP award in 2009. His postseason numbers are not great, though they're few and far between. He's batting just .275 with no home runs and one RBI in 44 plate appearances. Mauer has made $23 million in each of the last seven seaso ...

Ben Gamel, 2018 Fantasy Baseball Sleeper

Source: razzball.com --- Friday, December 29, 2017
Over in the Paul DeJong sleeper , I went over different types of sleepers. There was the the sleeper who-- Actually, just go there and read the categories I laid out like your mother lays out your clothes. Are you back? Good. Okay, Ben Gamel doesn't fit into any of those categories. He's in the category of "Who the eff is Ben Gamel?" Just on the Mariners alone, I could say Ryon Healy is a sleeper, and some people might agree. Mitch Haniger has been a sleeper for about three years. Maybe some would even consider Mike Zunino a sleeper. Ben Gamel though? He's not going to be drafted even in deep mixed leagues. He's a sleeper who fantasy Baseball 'perts won't even talk about, but if you mention him they'll be like, "Oh, yeah, he's a good sleeper." So, why not talk about him? "Because no one is going to talk about him." That's right, most fantasy Baseball 'perts judge their sleepers on how much they are not sleepers. Why is this? Not sure, ask them. Ben Gamel is around that of a $2 play in AL-Only leagues. He's the Rip Van Winkle of sleepers. He's such a sleeper I guarantee you there will be people asking me in the comments as late as June if they should pick him up. He's the kind of guy that can win super deep leagues with a very late round pick. If you only play in shallower mixed leagues, go check out my Paul DeJong sleeper. If you want a deep league flyer... So, what can we expect from Ben Gamel for 2018 fantasy Baseball and what ...

Bathrooms, baseball and poetry: The Best of TribTalk 2017

Source: www.texastribune.org --- Thursday, December 28, 2017
During 2017, TribTalk ran about 400 articles, written — with one notable exception — by people who don’t work for The Texas Tribune. It’s a place for opinions and editorials and even poetry (sometimes, if it’s great) written by people who are usually in the audience instead of on stage. The best part about editing their work is that they’re good at this: passionate about their subjects, lucid in their arguments, clear in their writing. Their work is a pleasure to read. Even in a crowd of good work, however, some things stand out, so we’re ending the year with a handful — okay, a couple of handfuls — of the best of TribTalk in 2017. Texas lawmakers retracted my award, but I wrote an acceptance speech anyway If you invite someone to come accept an award and talk to your group, and if that someone is Austin writer Sarah Bird, honor the deal. Or she’ll write about her experiences as only she can. The 2017 Texas House & Senate, from left to right: Post special-session edition Rice political scientist Mark P. Jones has become a regular writer for TribTalk, analyzing the voting of the Texas Legislature and putting it into a form and words that are actually useful to voters. Imagine that. And count us — and yourself — lucky. His latest, on the right-left spread of legislators in the Texas House and Senate, ran in November, just in time for campaign filing. The "bathroom bill" Legislation that rapidly became known as the “bathroom bill” ...
