SALT LAKE CITY — Gov. Gary Herbert appointed Orem resident Dan Hemmert to the Utah Senate on Friday. "I am humbled to represent the community that I have loved my entire life. I look forward to getting to work for the people of District 14," Hemmert said. Hemmert, a Republican, replaces Sen. Al Jackson, R-Highland, who resigned last month. The district includes parts of Orem, Pleasant Grove, American Fork, Highland and Alpine. Hemmert defeated Morgan Philpot in the GOP primary election in June and will be on the November ballot. Libertarian Joe Buchman and Independent American Curt Crosby will also be on the ballot. No Democrat filed to run for the seat. Hemmert's appointed term expires Dec. 31. Republican delegates in the district elected Hemmert by acclamation to fill Jackson's seat in a meeting Aug. 6. Hemmert owns Red Hanger Cleaners, which operates dry cleaning and professional laundry stores in northern Utah. He has also worked as the chief financial officer at the software company OrangeSoda, and has been the CFO and investment manager at John R. Miller Enterprises. He earned degrees in economics and law and an MBA from BYU. — Dennis Romboy
