Corona baseball makes bid for Division 1 Championship berth

PLACENTIA – Down a run with two outs in the top of the seventh inning, Corona pounded out seven hits to score four runs and pulled away with a 5-2 victory over host El Dorado Tuesday afternoon in the semifinals of the CIF-Southern Section Division 1 Baseball playoffs. With the win, the Panthers (24-9) move on to play El Toro on Friday evening at Dodger Stadium on 7:30 p.m. El Toro (26-7-1) shut out Mater Dei, 3-0, Tuesday. The comeback victory isn’t Corona’s first of these playoffs but has a common thread with the others. Each win is supported by seniors. A group of 15 seniors that include names like Beck, Hobbs, Gomez, Priddy and Czerwinski. Tuesday, senior infielder Eric Gomez and pitcher/shortstop Brendan Beck led the way back. Down to his last strike with two outs in the top of the seventh inning, Gomez laced a liner to center then stole second base. Beck followed with a single of his own to drive Gomez in, tying the score, 2-2. The run made up for an errant throw by Beck that aided El Dorado’s two-run fourth inning. “I felt down on myself after the error,” Beck said. “That’s a play I should be making. “But I never had any doubt, even down to last strike. We had a senior guy up there and that’s just what he does.” The run brought life to Corona and forced El Dorado to relieve lefty starter Austin Spinney, who kept the Panthers at bay for six solid innings.
