Mesa softball victory adds to title-game clinching lore

FULLERTON — Lauren Randle enjoyed a front-row seat last year watching her brother Justin and his Murrieta Mesa Baseball team dramatically win a CIF-Southern Section title. Now, the freshman is taking her turn with the Rams’ softball team. Randle sparked a three-run, fourth-inning rally and junior pitcher Autumn Pease struck out 14 in a six-hit shutout as Murrieta Mesa’s softball team blanked host Fullerton, 3-0, to advance to its first section championship game. The fourth-seeded Rams (23-10) face Newhall Hart, a 6-5 winner in 12 innings Tuesday in Division 3’s other semifinal, for the championship Friday or Saturday with site and time to be announced today. The Rams’ softball team had never even been to the playoffs before this season; a Murrieta team hasn’t reached a softball final since 2009. Randle, who at .495 leads the Rams in batting average, doubled to the left-field fence to start the fourth inning Tuesday and broke the scoreless tie when scoring later on Pease’s one-out single. “We argue about whose team is better,” Randle said of her brother, whose Rams won the Division 1 Baseball championship a year ago. “I think our team is better because we’re making history every time we win.” To this point, Randle has a strong argument. Mesa has given up but one run in four playoff victories behind Pease.
