UNC Roundup: Men’s golf finishes seasons, baseball plays Sunday doubleheader

MEN'S GOLF TAKES SECOND IN BIG SKY CHAMPIONSHIP A freshman and sophomore led the University of Northern Colorado to a second-place finish Sunday on the last day of the Big Sky Championship. Freshman Coby Welch had the best tournament performance for UNC, tying for second. Welch was a stroke away from Sacramento State's Aaron Beverly. Sacramento State won the tournament with a final tally of 874. UNC ended with 889. Welch ended play after three days with a combined score of 216 for an even finish. Sophomore Josh Matz had eight pars and a birdie for the second-best score Sunday, shooting 68 for a four under-par. Matz ended in sixth place. Junior Andrew Romano tied for 15th and sophomore Li Chen tied for 19th place to wrap up the top-20 performers. Romano shot 228 over the three days and Chen hit 231. Baseball SPLITS HOME DOUBLEHEADER The Bears were two innings away from taking both games of Sunday's doubleheader at Jackson Field. But Utah Valley (15-26) punched five runs to prevent that, winning game two 9-5. The Bears (16-24) won the first game 7-0, with Aaron Hamilton (3-4) throwing the win. UNC was on the way to another win, leading the Wolverines 5-3 heading into the top of the eighth. With a run already in for the inning, Utah Valley had a runner on third and second. Anthony Brady (0-1) struck out Utah Valley's Skyler Davis, but catcher Alex Kiel didn't hold on to the ball, and Davis reached one on a throwing error by Kiel. T ...
