Phildrick Llewellyn tries his luck in Italy

Source: dutchbaseballhangout.wordpress.com --- Thursday, November 30, 2017
Last week, you could read here about Gilmer Lampe who signed a deal with Fortitudo Bologna of the Italian Baseball League. Today it was announced that another player of the Dutch Kingdom will try his luck in Italian Baseball. Former minor leaguer Phildrick Llewellyn has signed a deal with A.S.D. Rimini Pirates for the 2018 season. Phildrick Llewellyn (photo: courtesy of Phrake photography) Phildrick, who is currently playing in the Asia Winter Baseball League with the representative team of the WBSC under the helm of Steve Janssen, used to play for the organizations of the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Baltimore Orioles. The highest level he reached was the A-Advanced Carolina League where he played for the Delmarva Shorebirds. After the 2015 season, Phildrick was released and he headed to the Pecos League, where he played for the Alpine Cowboys and hit .323 with the team from Texas. This year Phildrick also played in the Pecos League but this time for the Trinidad Triggers where he batted a whopping .431 with 116 base hits. Earlier this year, Phildrick participated in the preparation of team Kingdom of the Netherlands on the World Baseball Classic. During the training camp in Arizona, he played in games vs the Korean Baseball Organization teams LG Twins and NC Dinos but he did not make the cut for the WBC squad. By joining the A.S.D. I Got Shohei I Nearly Passed Out

Source: razzball.com --- Thursday, November 30, 2017
I'm excited to announce that I've already participated in my first 2018 fantasy Baseball mock draft. And here's the crazy part, it's still 2017. Mind blown! Last week Scott White from CBS invited me to join his first mock of the season. While one might have thought I would have passed on the offer considering the 2017 World Series had completed only three weeks earlier, I jumped at the opportunity. And when I say "jumped" I mean I shrugged and said to myself, "What the heck." The format for the mock league was head-to-head points using standard CBS scoring. Those of you that have read my posts during the last three years will know that I am a points league kinda guy. My content is focused on this format. What better way to get an early start on some new material than to join eleven other top notch analysts in a way too early mock draft. ...

Ex Baseball player Bret Boone wins today’s idiot award. Boone thought it would be a good idea to slide into the DM’s of a reporter to mock sexual harassment. Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you can’t escape the wave of women coming forward reporting sexual harassment claims. Apparently Boone doesn’t appreciate all the harassment claims being made and is mocking the alleged victims. If you read his tweets you can see what he’s doing. His attempt at a “joke” is disgusting, ill timed and highlights the patriarchal society that this type of unwanted and criminal behavior stems from. Shack's Arcade Corner: Ninja Baseball Bat Man

Source: www.shacknews.com --- Wednesday, November 29, 2017
This week on Shack's Arcade Corner, we take a look at Ninja Baseball Bat Man. The arcade game hit the US in 1993 and was developed and pulbished by IREM Corp. Ninja Baseball Bat Man was a side-scolling beat-em-up arcade game that had some really unique characters and enemies. The four playable characters were influenced by popular MLB stars of the era like Jose Canseco, Roger Clemens, and Darryl Strawberry. The arcade cabinet came in two, three, and four player configurations and sold way better in Japan than in the states. The Indians’ most average home runs of the season

Source: www.letsgotribe.com --- Wednesday, November 29, 2017
Extremes are great and XTREME and all, but what about the middle of the road? Doesn’t it deserve some love? This dark period after the Baseball season ends allows for some reflection on the feats of the past season. We analyze, look at what's neat, interesting, extreme. Readers of Fangraphs’ Jeff Sullivan and MLB.com’s Mike Petriello have been given fun articles about the most extreme pitches, hits, home runs, and catches of the regular season. They're usually pretty cool, demonstrating the new tools at our disposal for measuring the game and showing how the human body pushes itself to the absolute limit in Baseball. We salute these feats and the men that push themselves to the edge. But you know what Baseball loves? Averages. On-base, batting average, isolated slugging, the list goes on. Rate stats are the bare bones of Baseball judgement. In honor of that, here’s the most average home runs of the Cleveland Indians ’ 2017 season. The average home run hit by a Cleveland Indian, as drawn from the MLB HIt Tracker database, went 397.7 feet of true distance with a 103.2 mph exit velocity and a 28.4 degree launch angle. That is actually below average for Baseball, where the average homer went 400.3 feet at 103.9 miles per hour. THey were never a big home run hitting team - pretty average oddly enough, 15th in Baseball with 212. They just hit a ton of doubles enroute to being sixth in runs scored. But there’s always an average, or som ...

Matt Holliday Is Selling St. Louis To Giancarlo Stanton: ‘There’s No Better Place’

Source: stlouis.cbslocal.com --- Wednesday, November 29, 2017
ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – If the St. Louis Cardinals get the chance to sit down with Giancarlo Stanton and pitch the idea of playing in St. Louis, president of Baseball operations John Mozeliak will want to think about recruiting the help of former Cardinals outfielder Matt Holliday. Currently a free agent, Holliday was on MLB Network Radio, Wednesday, and talked about the chances of Stanton coming to St. Louis. It’s been reported that playing in Los Angeles is at the top of the 2017 NL MVP’s list, but Holliday believes he should re-consider. “You got all offseason to live in Miami or LA, or wherever he wants to live, but for six months getting after it as a Baseball player in St. Louis, there’s no better place. You get the chance to play for a winning franchise, in a city that loves Baseball that would revere him for the next 10 years as their superstar to kind of build their team around. I just think that it’s a better opportunity than maybe people are thinking.” Matt Holliday says he would call Giancarlo Stanton to sell him on St. Louis if needed #Cardinals #Marlins #MLB http://pic.twitter.com/tzUgl2dGhE — MLB Network Radio Sirius 209, XM 89 (@MLBNetworkRadio) November 29, 2017 Holliday points out St. Louis’ available payroll, a well-built farm system to stay competitive for years to come and the fact that Miami is rebuilding for the next few seasons. Wednesday Night Open Thread

Happy Birthday, Mariano Rivera . He turns 48 today. Time flies, man. Rivera is so very clearly the greatest relief pitcher in Baseball history — Trevor Hoffman, the only other man with 600+ saves, allowed 38 more runs than Mo in 194.1 fewer innings in his career — and he will be Hall of Fame eligible for the first time next winter. He’ll get in on the first ballot. No doubt about it. Rivera was my favorite Yankee of the dynasty years and I’m pretty sure I will never be as confident in another closer as I was in Mo. There have been lots of one-year Riveras. I don’t think we’ll ever see someone do what he did for nearly two decades though. The longevity is what separates Mo from everyone else. Anyway, here is an open thread for the evening. The Knicks and Nets are playing and there’s a bunch of college basketball on as well. That’s about it. Talk about anything other than politics and religion here. The post Wednesday Night Open Thread appeared first on River Avenue Blues . ...

Minor MLB Transactions: 11/29/17

Source: http://ift.tt/OjZxTm --- Wednesday, November 29, 2017
Here are the day’s minor moves from around the league, all courtesy of Baseball America’s Matt Eddy unless otherwise noted… The Dodgers have signed right-hander Jesen Therrien and outfielder Travis Taijeron to minor league contracts. Therrien, who underwent Tommy John surgery late in the 2018 season, inked a two-year minor league pact due to the fact that he’ll spend the 2018 season rehabbing from surgery. Therrien, 24, obliterated minor league opponents in the Phillies’ system this season, as evidenced by a 1.41 ERA, 10.2 K/9 and 1.4 BB/9 in 57 1/3 innings between Double-A and Triple-A. In the Majors, he logged an 8.35 ERA on 24 hits and seven walks with just 10 strikeouts, though Matt Gelb of the Philadelphia Inquirer noted that his velocity dropped sharply in the Majors, quite possibly due to the effects of his ailing elbow. The 28-year-old Taijeron, a former Mets farmhand, mashed in the hitters’ haven of Las Veags (.272/.383/.525, 25 homers, 32 doubles) but hit just .173/.271/.269 in 59 big league plate appearances in 2017. He’s a career .274/.382/.523 hitter in more than 1500 Triple-A PAs. Outfielder Ryan LaMarre has latched on with the Twins on a minors pact as well. The 29-year-old has seen fleeting big league time with the Reds, Red Sox and A’s over the past three seasons but collected just a pair of hits and a pair of walks in 40 trips to the dish. LaMarre can handle all three outfield spots and owns a lifetime .268/.33 ...

Top 10 Pirates Prospects: Right Now

Source: bucconation.wordpress.com --- Wednesday, November 29, 2017
By Jason Shetler Mitch Keller – p/c: Martin Griff Multiple Baseball publications release their updated prospect rankings at different times. MLB Pipeline does theirs late in the regular season, while Baseball America and Baseball Prospectus come out with theirs during the offseason. Just for fun, I thought I’d put together my list of the Top 10 Pirates prospects right now, and then comparing that to where the other publications have the prospects ranked at. 1. Mitch Keller: 2017 as a whole was outstanding for Mitch Keller. After posting a 3.14 ERA with High A Bradenton and a 3.12 ERA with AA Altoona this season, Keller dominated some of the game’s best prospects in the Arizona Fall League, where he put up an ERA of 1.52. He worked on his changeup during the AFL, and it’s now become an effective pitch for him, to go along with the mid-90’s fastball and plus curveball. MLBP (2), BA (1), BP (1) 2. Austin Meadows: Although Mitch Keller has surpassed Austin Meadows on the list, Meadows is still the Pirates top prospect in terms of position players. He had just a .670 OPS this year with AAA Indianapolis, but hamstring issues played a big part in him struggling. When healthy, Meadows has the tools to be a solid, all-around outfielder. The Pirates made the no-brainer decision to place Meadows on the 40-man roster, protecting him from the Rule 5 Draft. MLBP (1), BA (2), BP (2) 3. Texas Rangers Hope To Sign A Young Japanese Pitcher Who Can Also Hit The Ball

Source: keranews.org --- Wednesday, November 29, 2017
From Texas Standard . At the highest levels of pro Baseball, pitchers are usually the players with the lowest batting averages. There’s just not enough time to master both pitching and hitting. Finding a player who excels at both is akin to discovering a unicorn. That’s why teams are chasing Shohei Ohtani . At just 23 years old, Ohtani is the best pitcher and one of the best batters in Nippon Professional Baseball , the Japanese big leagues. He plays for the Nippon-Ham Fighters, based in Sapporo, but next season, he’ll cross the Pacific to play in the United States. Teams are making their pitches to him right now, and he’s expected to make a decision on his new Baseball home by Christmas. So where might that be? Many observers believe that the Texas Rangers are among the teams that have a real chance to sign him. T.R. Sullivan , who covers the Rangers for MLB.com, says Ohtani is a young, talented pitcher, but what’s unique about him is that he can also swing the bat. ...

Gary Sheffield and Wife’s New Game Plan: Real Estate Reality TV Stardom

Source: www.realtor.com --- Wednesday, November 29, 2017
Jaime Yandolino / FYI Take Baseball legend Gary Sheffield and his wife, Grammy-nominated singer DeLeon , mix in some dreamy-looking homes, and what do you get? “Sheffield Real Estate,” a new reality TV show that premieres on the FYI Network this Thursday detailing the couple’s adventures brokering deals on luxury homes in Tampa, FL. So how did this power couple end up in the real estate biz? Gary, who retired from Major League Baseball in 2009, is currently a sports agent. Meanwhile, DeLeon—a gospel singer who, at age 8, became the youngest artist ever nominated for a Grammy—has found her second act by opening her own real estate brokerage. From there, the couple have teamed up to turn their past talents into real estate gold. Here’s what our sneak peek at the premiere episode of “Sheffield Real Estate” taught us about how real estate works. Real estate agents can flourish off referrals Tampa is gaga over sports. It’s home to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (NFL), the Tampa Bay Lightning (NHL), and the Tampa Bay Rays (MLB). And it’s also home to six MLB team spring training camps, plus a number of minor-league franchises. As such, there are plenty of coaches, players, and staff coming and going who need to find homes, or sell them when they leave—and it behooves Gary, who’s naturally plugged into the pro sports scene, to see that his clients can quickly surmount these hurdles. And who better to refer these clients to than his hard-work ...

The first-year Hall of Fame candidates

Source: http://ift.tt/1gPFWHK --- Wednesday, November 29, 2017
What players making their debut on this ballot will gain entry to the Hall? There are five times of year I love most, as a fan of the game of Baseball. There’s Opening Day, the MLB Draft, the trade deadline, the Winter Meetings, and then the Hall of Fame voting. The excellent BBHOF Tracker , for the 2017/2018 off-season is here, now. If you are just now finding out about it, thank Ryan Thibodaux , who runs the tracker every off-season (you can see records from past years on the tracker linked above). This marks the beginning of an exciting time for me, where I will refresh the tracker at least once a day, curious to see if more ballots have been made public. As of this writing, there are only 10 ballots up, but that number will start to skyrocket in the coming weeks and months. This is the start of a series, where I will be recounting the majority of players on the ballot, explaining why I believe they will or will not make the Hall of Fame (this year, or ever), and explaining my own hypothetical ballot, were I given a chance to cast one. Unfortunately, I’m not big, so I don’t get a ballot. Darn. This first entry will focus on the most likely first-year players to draw votes. They have been listed in the order of plausibility they get elected (in my opinion). Chipper Jones Photo by Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images Chipper Jones was always one of my favorites to watch, primarily because of his swing. Chipper Jones is going to be a Hall ...

How can the Phillies land Shohei Ohtani?

Source: http://ift.tt/1qmll7A --- Wednesday, November 29, 2017
By Ship1231 via Wikimedia Commons Tuesday on the “Baseball Tonight with Buster Olney” podcast , reporter and prospect expert Keith Law said the Phillies were his “sleeper team” for acquiring Japanese pitcher/hitter Shohei Ohtani. Law noted the Phils have enormous payroll flexibility and a young team, which could draw Ohtani, and said that while the Phils aren’t a favorite, they probably have better odds at landing Ohtani than the average fan would tend to believe. This makes sense. While the Phils don’t have the drawing power of the Yankees, Dodgers or Mariners – three of the four favorites with the Rangers – they might actually be just a step down from them in the running. So what would it take for the Phils to land the Japanese Babe Ruth? First off, Ohtani is worth it. A 23-year-old pitcher who throws three to four plus pitches, he has a career 2.52 ERA with 624 strikeouts and 200 walks in 543 innings for the Nippon Ham Fighters. Scouts would say he’s an ace right now in the major leagues. He’s also a hitter, and for the Fighters hit .286/.358/.500 in 1,170 career plate appearances. He has pop (22 home runs in 2016) and carries a good strikeout-to-walk ratio (better than 3-to-1 last year). He was injured last season but still put together a solid season, mostly from the plate. While he wouldn’t be a stud hitter in the majors, it’s likely he’d be worth plugging into a lineup a few times a week. This works better in the American ...

They’re the only team in Baseball that doesn’t, so they’re taking their time with the search. The Yankees had interviewed five candidates so far, and are now officially accepting resumes again. The next name on the list will apparently be recently retired Carlos Beltran . The Yankees will get close to 10 candidates before announcing two or three finalists and then settling on the next manager. Tyler Norton’s already booked his ticket for the Beltrain . Baseball America | George King : Brian Cashman has done a lot to turn this organization around over the last couple years. This is why he’s been named Baseball America’s MLB Executive of the Year. He orchestrated one of the fastest turnarounds in Baseball history having the Yankees go from sellers in 2016 to contenders and buyers in 2017. Fire Cashman though. New York Post | George A. I think Manny belongs in. I can understand not putting him in the first year, his first year on the ballot, but he belongs, and imo he should go this year. Portrait of Dave-4

Source: zongrik.wordpress.com --- Tuesday, November 28, 2017
During Dave’s life, he cycled through a vast majority of the spectrum of Baseball: he played, he coached and he umped both Baseball and softball. At the time that we met, he was only umping softball. Dave had stopped being an Umpire for Baseball because, “Baseball got to be so long and it took longer and longer and longer.” The last Baseball game he umped involved the San Diego Padres spring training game against Team Canada and it took about three and a half hours. After that he said, “I’m never going to do this again. And that was the last game of Baseball I ever did.” Dave thought the World Series of 2017 was great, “I was kind of hoping that Houston would win.” But he wasn’t a fan for any particular team, “I grew up in a minor league club, so it was a lot of fun when I was growing up to see all these guys go to the majors, but I don’t really have a team.” Dave was originally from Rochester, New York, USA. He found himself in California after serving as a missionary in Arizona, then moved to California to join his parents. Rochester was famous for the Eastman-Kodak company, the one that made wonderful film, like Kodachrome . He worked there as a machinist and a tool and die maker. I decided to stylize his portrait to look like an old 1960’/1970’s Kodacolor film, to honor his roots. Not only did Dave work for Eastman-Kodak, but he also played fastpitch softball for the Eastman -Kodak corporate team. Posted on: 21-U by Melody A ...

We tried smashing this coating that makes glass nearly unbreakable

Source: http://ift.tt/eKERsB --- Tuesday, November 28, 2017
Solar Gard makes a protective film for glass called  Armorcoat.  We took a Baseball bat to it to see how well it holds up. Following is a full transcript of the video. This glass is made to be nearly unbreakable.  Normal glass shatters pretty easily.  Solar Gard applies an Armorcoat film to glass.  This film prevents it from shattering into small pieces.  It also makes it harder to break through.  This glass has a 14 millimeter film on the front side and a 2 millimeter sheet on the back. Let’s count how many hits it takes. The protective film isn't bulletproof,  but it's designed to delay forced entry.  Providing an extra 90 seconds to find safety.  The film is installed on school windows around the US and several buildings in DC. US Capitol Building. Library of Congress. The J. Edgar Hoover FBI Building. It can protect against flying debris during hurricanes. It's also used on cars to prevent "smash and grabs." Maybe one day "fragile glass" won't exist. Reliving the 2017 Season: Toronto Blue Jays Edition

Source: theprocessreport.net --- Tuesday, November 28, 2017
With the end of the regular season comes a time for reflection for the majority of Baseball fans. What went right? What went wrong? You probably have a few ideas where your teams fell short or exceeded expectations, but what about a completely emotionless point of view? Throughout this season I have shown what batter and pitcher production looks like when we regress balls in play to look more like what the players should have seen using exit velocity and launch angle. The offseason will be no different as I take a team by team look at how the season fared for the team, while going a little deeper on a handful of players from each team. The order will mirror next June’s draft slotting so you can expect to find some depression leading to elation here. It’s going to take some time, but I would like to get two to three of these out each week which should allow for every team being covered before our glorious game returns to continue threshing our hearts. Past: DET SFG PHI CWS CIN NYM SDP ATL OAK PIT BAL It wasn’t that long ago that the Blue Jays boasted one of the most fearsome lineups in recent memory. While the names remained mostly the same in 2017 the offensive output was no longer in such rarified air. It started out well enough with strong production, but Father Time remains undefeated. The raft of 30-something players led by Josh Donaldson, Troy Tulowitzki and Jose Bautista showed their mortality once the nagging injuries tur ...

What Is Marwin Gonzalez Doing?

Source: www.fangraphs.com --- Tuesday, November 28, 2017
Chatter has been picking up that Major League Baseball will introduce a pitch clock in 2018. It’s felt like an inevitable development for some time, with the clock having been in place in the upper minors for the last few years. Reactions have been mixed, because reactions are always mixed, but the pitch clock is coming, and it’s probably going to be fine. We’ll get used to it, everyone will get used to it, and the game will remain by and large the same. I made a point about the pitch clock last week . According to early reports, the proposed clock would only be used when the bases are empty, and I pointed out that the game only really slows down after somebody reaches. When there’s a runner on base, pitchers have more to worry about, so it makes sense that they’d work slower. But I don’t want to make this all about pitchers. We tend to think of pitchers as being responsible for dictating the pace. They are, after all, the guys holding the baseballs. But in any at-bat, there are two parties involved. As Buster Olney wrote in his report , no batter in the National League averaged more time between pitches than Odubel Herrera . And no batter in either league averaged more time between pitches than Marwin Gonzalez . On average last year, overall, there were 24.2 seconds between pitches. For Gonzalez, that average was 29.5. That was up from the previous year’s 27.2, and up from his career low of 24.4. Pitching to Gonzalez was most r ...

Fists and lists: Sustained by the tiny embers of hot stove season

Source: www.sbnation.com --- Tuesday, November 28, 2017
Tuesday’s Say Hey, Baseball looks at Giancarlo Stanton’s list and Doug Fister’s signing. It’s very clear that the stove isn’t lit. You know it. I know it. Say Hey, Baseball keeps saying it . If you’ve ever turned on a gas stove and heard the clicking sound, that’s what’s happening. And it won’t stop. Ever, probably. So we’re left to ruminate on what might be (like a Giancarlo Stanton trade) or hold tight to the small sparks of hope (like a Doug Fister signing), and that’s okay too. Fister’s contract with the Rangers gives him at minimum $3.5 million for 2018 with a 2019 club option and the possibility of adding up to $8 million extra. Barely spending a fraction of what they will need in free agency this season, the Rangers got major league experience from a guy who has struggled with a sub-90s fastball but whose most recent work is trending up. Even if that trend includes an ERA upwards of 4.00 in the last two months of 2017 and will coincide with Cole Hamels regression, Fister doesn’t have to be the ace. (He won't have to be the two-starter or probably the three-starter either.) Fister takes one for the league-wide team by signing before the market is set and his value is cemented. He probably didn’t lose out on much given his drawbacks. But he could be a steal if he continue his upward trend. The Rangers still need rotation help, and this deal doesn’t hold them back from other options. One factor that led Fister to be one of t ...

Jackson 5: Red Sox free agent targets

Source: thedrive.bangordailynews.com --- Tuesday, November 28, 2017
By Aaron Jackson As the weather gets colder many of us long for the days of warm sunshine and Baseball. While that may feel like years away right now, Baseball’s Winter Meetings are right around the corner, and the Red Sox figure to play a prominent role in any deals being made. Ignoring the trade possibilities (do the Red Sox really have enough in the cupboard to make a big deal?), here are 5 free agents that Boston will take a long look at. Shohei Ohtani: This guy could be the real deal. Depending on who you ask, he compares favorably to Clayton Kershaw or Mike Trout, which tells me he probably won’t be either, but those are pretty high marks to try and hit. Ohtani is certainly a player that many teams will be after as he will come relatively cheap given what he’s capable of, and his age (23 years old). Ohtani is already being called the Japanese Babe Ruth as he is a prodigious power hitter and has topped out at 100mph on the mound. You’d have to wonder whether there’s a team out there willing to let him do both and that may be the deciding factor as Ohtani has requested a letter from every team interested detailing how they’ll use him. Given the price and the performance so far in Japan, I think the Red Sox should go all in after this guy. I would DH him 3-4 times a week, pitch him every 5th day and have some regular off days scattered around as well. D. Martinez: Martinez is a major late bloomer, and a bit of a defensive lia ...

Dear President Trump: Your Tax Plan Needs Bigger Deficits!

I have seen article after article sounding the alarm regarding the impact the tax plan will have on the debt and deficit. But the private sector NEEDS government deficit spending if it is going to recover properly. Why? Because government deficits are private-sector surpluses.
