And coming in with the tide are three Canadian pitchers to work for the University of Hawaii Rainbow Warriors and coach Mike Trapasso. RHP Cade Smith (Abbotsford, BC) and RHP Sam Shoemaker (West Vancouver, BC) are new to the Island, while RHP-1B Carter Loewen (Abbotsford, BC) will be a red shirt freshman come spring. Shoemaker pitched for the North Shore Twins, while Smith was with the Chilliwack Cougar and Loewen wore an Abbotsford uniform. Drafted in the 40th round by the Blue Jays, Loewen was a two-way man batted a league fifth-best .339 with 21 RBIs, 12 doubles and four home runs, registering a .438 on-base percentage in the spring of 2016. Loewen had a win with eight strikeouts in five innings, allowing only one walk and three hits for a 1.40 ERA. He received all-Canada/Puerto Rico Region Honorable Mention by Perfect Game and was a two-time all-BCPBL second-team honoree. In 2015 he worked in 12 games with 10 starts, recording a 3.10 ERA and 45 strikeouts in 67 innings.
