Every team needs Shohei Ohtani . Every team should want Shohei Ohtani. And given the rather restrictive limits put in place on how much Ohtani can make if he comes over to the majors this winter, every team can afford Shohei Ohtani. So the question then becomes, from the outside looking in: what’s the best team for Ohtani to join from a fan’s perspective? Where would he most serve the fun of the game? We can eliminate some places immediately — the Miami Marlins are going to be a joyless suck for the foreseeable future, for instance, and it would be odd to see any agent worth their salt directing a young player who can choose his destination to a team desperately trying to deal the reigning National League MVP so they can turn the club into a more efficient revenue machine for ownership. But while Ohtani will likely be a treasure to watch no matter where he ends up, some teams seem clearly preferable to others. Seattle Mariners The Mariners have a fairly long and impressive history with professionals coming over to MLB from Nippon Professional Baseball, from hit king and future Hall of Famer Ichiro Suzuki to current veteran rotation mainstay Hisashi Iwakuma. They’re precisely the sort of mid-card team where Ohtani could immediately become a star, but wouldn’t be the face of the franchise from day one — a smallish pond, but one with some pretty seriously big fish already in the persons of Felix Hernandez, Robinson Cano and Nelson ...
