Article: Open Windows

Source: twinsdaily.com --- Tuesday, January 30, 2018
'People ask me what I do in winter when there’s no Baseball. I’ll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring.' Rogers Hornsby's legendary quote almost always dances through my head around this time of year, as I barricade myself inside from treacherous cold fronts and count down the days to those four glorious words: Pitchers and catchers report. There are always elements of mystery and excitement at play as the offseason winds down, but right now it's all magnified. First, because the team's biggest offseason splash is almost surely yet to come. And second, because the Twins are uniquely positioned to make a run at a division title and more in 2018. The window is wide open, due in large part to very fortuitous (and temporary) outside circumstances.Mariners GM Jerry DiPoto had a pretty wild quote last week. He said that in the game right now, "You could argue there is more competition to get the No. 1 pick in the draft than to win the World Series." And well, there's a lot of truth in that statement, which surely makes MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred bristle. Agent Scott Boras lamented earlier this week that a "non-competitive cancer" is "ruining the fabric of the sport." Dramatic and biased? Yes. But that doesn't mean he's completely off base. The "loser bug" is certainly present in the AL Central, where three teams are making virtually no effort to contend. Ron Gardenhire's Tigers are coming off a season in wh ...

Brew Crew Ball Community Top Prospects Vote #21

Source: www.brewcrewball.com --- Tuesday, January 30, 2018
This is your chance to choose who the most exciting future Brewers are! The calendar has finally turned over to 2018, meaning that the Major League Baseball offseason is now roughly halfway complete. Only another two weeks until pitchers and catchers report! Our local nine blew the doors of the offseason last week, dealing away four good prospects to the Marlins to bring in Christian Yelich. That sort of renders this list outdated before it’s even been complete, but we’ll forge ahead and continue voting! So now it’s your turn to parse through Milwaukee’s top prospects and vote for where you think they stack up in the farm system. You’ll be given guidance from the top prospect lists that have already been released, and once outlets like MLB Pipeline and Minor League Ball update their lists for 2018, those will be included, too. Over the weekend, KJ Harrison was narrowly voted as top prospect #20. Today, he has been removed from the list and Jacob Nottingham has been added as we'll vote for top prospect #21: LHP Kodi Medeiros (age 22) Drafted 1st round (12th overall) round in 2014 2017 stats (A+): 128.1 IP || 4.98 ERA || 121 K || 53 BB || 7 HR || 1.309 WHIP Baseball Prospectus : n/a Fangraphs : 25 Prospects 1500 : 39 Brewers Farm : 21 SS Jean Carmona (age 18) Signed as an international free agent in July 2017 2017 stats (Rookie): 248 PA || .266/.367/.406 || 1 HR || 10 SB || 51 K || 28 BB Baseball Prospectus: n/a Fangraphs: 18 Pros ...

Milwaukee Brewers 2018 Payroll Projection: Update 3

Source: www.brewcrewball.com --- Tuesday, January 30, 2018
So, a lot has happened. Last season according to Cot’s Baseball Contracts, the Milwaukee Brewers opened the year with the league’s lowest payroll at just a shade over $63 mil. That was the second consecutive season that Milwaukee opened the year with a payroll of less than $65 mil after topping $80+ mil in eight straight seasons from 2008-2015. The Brewers did augment payroll a bit during the season when they added players from outside the organization for their playoff run, but even still were among the lowest-spending clubs in Baseball. But the team has made some major additions to their roster since our last update two weeks ago , and the payroll outlook for next season has changed dramatically. Slingin’ David Stearns sent four prospects (including Lewis Brinson) to Miami for Christian Yelich , who is under contract for the next four season plus one club option after that. He also inked an old friend to a new long-term deal, bringing Lorenzo Cain back to the organization that drafted and developed him. Finally, it was reported yesterday that the team has agreed to a modest two-year deal with veteran reliever Matt Albers . So here’s how things currently stand with only a little over two more weeks until pitchers and catchers report: Total: $87,165,000 There are a few caveats to this chart, of course: Ryan Braun ($4 mil) has deferred money in his contract which will be paid out at a later date. Also, Yovani Gallardo has $2 mil ...

Trading Card Holder DIY tutorial

Source: lifesewsavory.com --- Tuesday, January 30, 2018
Last year I made Jack this trading card holder to display some of his favorite soccer cards… he’s since moved onto old Baseball cards, then more recently vintage football cards {haha}. I think there was a short pokemon phase in there as well…And while his collections don’t seem to hold his attention for very long, this card holder is made to last and hold whatever cards the latest collection may be. Trading Card Holder – DIY tutorial Ok, so after months of my son bugging me to make him this holder, it was actually a pretty quick project. I’m going to show you how I maed this DIY trading card holder, so you can make one too! You will need… Bulletin board , clear vinyl and any thick fabric {such as canvas} These were all items we had around the house, but you can also purchase them pretty inexpensively as well. Start by cutting your fabric just larger than the bulletin board. I folded my fabric over, so I just had 3 raw sides. Sew those three open sides, with the right side of the fabric together. Leave a several inch opening to turn. Turn your canvas right side out through this hole. Pin it closed and topstitch around the entire edge of holder to secure and flatten the edges. Now grab a card { I think most trading cards are a pretty standard size} and Measure the height. I cut my vinyl about 3.5″ tall. Cut strips of vinyl this height and as wide as your canvas. Pin the strips down your canvas with around an inch between the vinyl ...

Reactions to the Chief Wahoo news (and other baseball related things)

Source: www.letsgotribe.com --- Tuesday, January 30, 2018
Morning news and notes for Tuesday, January 30, 2018. So, um, was there anything newsworthy yesterday? Tribe There’s currently no Cleveland news other than Chief Wahoo news Decision on Indians’ logo about bigger picture | MLB Castrovince has an excellent piece on the recent decision to cease the use of Chief Wahoo in 2019. This passage specifically stands out: And so I’ve always understood the sentimentality associated with Wahoo. I get why people here view the logo as some intrinsic piece of this ballclub’s brand. It’s why many fans will be upset with Major League Baseball’s announcement Monday that the 2018 season will be the last with Chief Wahoo on the Indians’ uniforms. But the inconvenient reality of sharing a planet with other human beings is that you don’t get to decide what is or what is not offensive to people. And if you divorce yourself even momentarily from the laundry you’ve grown up rooting for, it’s really not difficult to understand why Native American groups would be offended by this exaggerated, unflattering, cartoon portrayal of their people. Indians’ Chief Wahoo logo Q&A | MLB Contrary to popular belief (at least popular among Facebook commenters), MLB is not going to raid your house for all Chief Wahoo gear and burn it in front of you. With that being said, I do appreciate this passage: It seems like MLB forced this change to get the ASG, is that true? The two are not connected in any way. Our submission fo ...

Cleveland Indians to drop controversial logo from uniforms

Source: www.sportbusiness.com --- Tuesday, January 30, 2018
Cleveland Indians to drop controversial logo from uniforms Posted: 30 Jan 2018 Major League Baseball (MLB) and the Cleveland Indians have announced that the ‘Chief Wahoo’ logo will be removed from the team’s kit, effective with the 2019 season, following decades of protests that the image is racist. MLB said the decision has been made after “thoughtful and productive discussions” between the league and the Indians. “Major League Baseball is committed to building a culture of diversity and inclusion throughout the game,” MLB commissioner Rob Manfred said. “Over the past year, we encouraged dialogue with the Indians organisation about the club's use of the Chief Wahoo logo. During our constructive conversations, (owner) Paul Dolan made clear that there are fans who have a longstanding attachment to the logo and its place in the history of the team. “Nonetheless, the club ultimately agreed with my position that the logo is no longer appropriate for on-field use in Major League Baseball, and I appreciate Mr. Dolan's acknowledgement that removing it from the on-field uniform by the start of the 2019 season is the right course.” Various versions of the grinning, red-faced caricature have been in use since 1947, but will now be removed from the team’s shirt sleeves and caps starting with the 2019 season, when Cleveland will host the All-Star Game. However, the Associated Press news agency noted that the Indians will continue to wear th ...

The Cleveland Indians’ jerseys will look a bit different starting in 2019, with the team removing the Chief Wahoo insignia. Major League Baseball announced the decision on Monday. The Indians will discontinue the use of the logo on their uniforms after the 2018 season. The mutual decision was made by the Indians and the league, according to a news release from Major League Baseball. MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred called the logo “no longer appropriate.” The   Indians opted to go back   to the Block C as their primary mark on apparel before the 2014 season. UCLA baseball shows promise for 2018 season in alumni game

Source: dailybruin.com --- Monday, January 29, 2018
Cleveland Indians pitcher Trevor Bauer got the start for the UCLA alumni team Saturday – and the 2018 Bruins capitalized. The current team topped the Bruin alumni 5-3, scoring 3 runs on 4 hits off the major leaguer in his four innings pitched. “For a lot of people, that might be their only chance to face someone in the bigs,” said sophomore first baseman Michael Toglia. “I was just trying to enjoy it and get the most out of it as I could.” Toglia led the 2018 team with 3 hits and 3 RBIs. After a slow start to the 2017 season, Toglia finished with a .261 batting average, recording 8 home runs and 33 RBIs on the year. “It’s a big feel thing,” Toglia said. “Once the first one comes, they kind of come in clusters. The biggest thing is trying to just get it going.” Senior pitcher Jake Bird was the starter for the 2018 Bruins. He pitched four innings, allowing 2 runs on 4 hits and one strikeout. “It’s a cool experience,” Bird said. “I got to pitch against Trevor Bauer and throw against some big league hitters. It gives me a little taste of hopefully what I’m doing in a few years.” The 2018 Bruins got the scoring started when junior center fielder Daniel Amaral led off the first inning with a walk. He then stole second and would later score on an RBI groundout by Toglia to give the Bruins an early lead. The alumni answered with a two-run home run in the second inning by Brett Stephens, who was drafted by the Colorado Rockies in 2017. T ...

Five Rookie Hitters to Draft for 2018 Fantasy Baseball

Source: rotoexperts.com --- Monday, January 29, 2018
Five Rookie Hitters With Veteran Production Potential We Fantasy team owners love to boast that we were the first in our league to find the next rookie sensation. I’m talking about a prospect who can provide a Fantasy team with an unexpected spark that will help propel it to a Fantasy championship. Despite all the detailed scouting reports and other resources at our disposal, finding that special rookie impact player is extremely difficult. You might end up falling in love with several rookies but despite all your draft prep, prospects are a volatile group and rostering too many of them can work against you because of their unpredictable nature. Try to limit your exposure to a select one or two that you feel particularly strong about. I’ve selected five rookie batters who have a good chance to secure ample playing time, and have the skill set that gives them a good chance at a successful rookie season. Take my advice, but you should also do your own research to determine if a particular player should be added to your Fantasy team. Ryan McMahon, 1B, Rockies At press time, MLB.com’s Rockies depth chart lists McMahon as Colorado’s starting first baseman. Ian Desmond was expected to play first base for the Rockies last season, but he broke his hand in spring training. With Carlos Gonzalez likely headed out of Colorado via free agency, Desmond will play in the outfield in 2018. McMahon’s natural position is third base, but that spot ...

Montrealers immediately reacted with furor and saw it as yet another slight against les Quebecois from Major League Baseball. As an obsessed Expo historian, my response is: Get over it! The Expos have 3 more hats in Cooperstown than the Angels (Vlad will be their first) and still more than the Blue Jays who only have one (Roberto Alomar). 2 – RUSH BUBBLE NOT BURSTING : The Saskatchewan Rush’s latest overtime win in Calgary has me wondering, ‘When is this love affair between Saskatoon and professional lacrosse going to end?’ My partner, Sheena, and I attended our first Rush game in the spring of 2016 and were blown away by the young, energetic, sellout crowd of 15,000. The high energy was fantastic and the music was great until the 4th quarter when we had had enough. You can only listen to the same scoring song so many times (think it was 13 that night) and to see Matthew McConaughey repeatedly pounding his chest on the big-screen went from amusing to exhausting in about 2 hours. The perfect game for me would be something almost as high scoring as lacrosse and maybe on ice. I wonder what on earth that could be? La Cueva Baseball will be strong at the plate and a mystery on the hill

Source: krqe.com --- Monday, January 29, 2018
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – What do you do for an encore after a 28-1 season that also brought a Class 6A State Championship? The La Cueva Bears are about to find out as they defend their title won a season ago. “You know, if we can develop some pitching and you know, I think our defense is going to be as good as it was last year…and our offense got a chance to be close to what it was last year,” said Bears Head Coach Gerard Pineda. “Hopefully we will be in the conversation come state tournament time.” Outfielder and catcher Ryan Johnson agrees with his coach. “We did lose some pitching, but we should be able to overcome all of that just with the chemistry and team confidence we have been able to build over last season,” said Johnson. Pitcher Ben Schoneman is the only Bear among the pitchers with varsity experience. He set himself apart with his talent last season while helping the Bears win it all. Schoneman is so confident in the Bears ability to play on the defensive end, he feels like it will help make up for the inexperience at pitcher. “It’s a lot more helpful when you have a defense like we have behind us,” said Schoneman. “Because it gives you that confidence, even if you miss a pitch your defense will be behind you to back you up.” The Bears will start the season Feb. 27 just like they did last year, against the Valley Vikings. The Vikings were the only team to beat the Bears last year in the season opener.     ...

Open thread for night owls: After years of promises Cleveland finally giving up Chief Wahoo (in '19)

Source: www.dailykos.com --- Monday, January 29, 2018
Given the latest attacks today on democracy from some of the top dogs in our government, you might well have missed a small bit of news coming out of Cleveland. The city’s Baseball team is finally giving up its excremental mascot known as Chief Wahoo. Not until next year. But, still, better late than never. In light of this, for tonight’s Night Owls, I’ve excerpted a diary I wrote on the subject in 2016 when Cleveland earned a berth at the World Series: Thumbs up to Cleveland for going to the World Series, but send that f'n Chief Wahoo to oblivion : [...] For some Americans, however, the fun is going to be at least partly spoiled by the Cleveland team’s stubborn defiance in continuing to display their vile racist logo, a caricature of an American Indian, Little Red Sambo Chief Wahoo. Although Cleveland adopted the name of the team 101 years ago, a cartoonish depiction of an “Indian” mascot with yellow skin emerged more than 80 years ago. This was reengineered in the late ‘40s and soon everybody was calling him Chief Wahoo. In 1951, the caricature was tweaked again, this time with red skin. Since then, it’s been rejiggered only slightly. As usual, those who say there’s nothing wrong with the caricature, from the owner to the fans who show up at the games painted in garish red face and woo-woo-whooping, it’s supposedly all about respect and honor of America’s Native peoples. This would be laughable if it weren’t so moronic. Chief W ...

State of the Position: Catcher

Source: www.faketeams.com --- Monday, January 29, 2018
Can Austin Barnes be the Dodgers’ Opening Day starter or will he take a backseat to Yasmani Grandal? Catcher is one of the most important positions in the game of Baseball, but when it comes to fantasy it is often an afterthought. This can be for many reasons which include the lack of depth, plate appearances or overall contact ability among the position. Since 2010 the strikeout rate among catcher has jumped from 17.8% to 22.3%. This lack of contact could really hurt fantasy teams, especially when for those who play in points leagues. Last year the catcher position had a slash line of .245/.315/.406, averaged a home run every 31.3 plate appearances and only stole a total of 80 stolen bases. This lack of contact and speed could really make players like J.T. Realmuto and Austin Barnes quite valuable, as they have the ability to be 15/15 guys while also hitting for a high batting average. The Superstar Gary Sanchez , New York Yankees Sanchez has proven he deserves to be considered one of the top power hitters in the game. Whether you look at his 53 home runs in just 756 plate appearances or watched him knocked out Giancarlo Stanton in the home run derby last year, there is no denying his ability to hit for power. With a 36.6% fly ball rate, 43.1% of batted balls hit with at least 95 mph, and a 36.9% hard contact rate, Sanchez has the ability to put up another 30-homer season. The one question going into the season is Sanchez’s bat ...

Will Franta, a community member of fangraphs (and a Twins fan!) wrote a thought provoking piece about why we are excited when our favorite sports team make a shrewd signing even though it only helps the owner’s pocket book and not the players we actually pay to see. 2018 FANTASY BASEBALL DRAFT PRIMER: THIRD BASEMAN

Source: http://ift.tt/1MI2gBT --- Monday, January 29, 2018
The now super-potent third base position takes center stage in our Draft Primers and this power-packed fraternity will see a few names called out in Round 1/2.  Draft Strategy:  Third base has become so power-packed that there is actually some good depth here but the allure of tabbing a Kris Bryant, Nolan Arenado, Jose Ramirez, and Manny Machado will be tough to ignore.  Feel free to take any of these guys among the initial 12-15 picks and Josh Donaldson is close to that area code as well. THIRD BASEMAN I WILL TARGET Nolan Arenado, Manny Machado, Kris Bryant, Jose Ramirez:  I love all four of these guys and each should be quickly snatched up if you have the chance.  While you would love to have a first baseman/outfield combo your first two rounds third base has gotten so strong that supplementing here is also worthwhile.  I would rank them:  Arenado, Bryant, Machado, Ramirez in that order. Josh Donaldson:  While the overall 2017 numbers fell a bit from 2015-16, Josh Donaldson went nuclear during the second half of the year which coincided with him being healthy which he wasn't prior to the All-Star break.  Yes Donaldson is aging and dealing with more wear-and-tear of late but his power bat is still supreme. Anthony Rendon:  If you choose to not take a third baseman in the first two rounds, this is the guy you want to be all over in Round 3.  Rendon is completely legit as a five-tool fantasy Baseball stud and he has now fully put ...

Extra Innings: In baseball, anything can happen

Source: dailytrojan.com --- Monday, January 29, 2018
Sam Arslanian | Daily Trojan Baseball is the most exciting sport. I have played Baseball for as long as I can remember, so it might be a bit biased for me to make this claim. But I have a justification for it. I am getting really tired of watching the same teams compete for championships. The New England Patriots win the Super Bowl seemingly every year, Alabama wins the College Football Playoffs and the NBA Championship is a toss up between the Warriors and the Cavs. It’s just boring now. Unlike its counterparts, the MLB hasn’t had a repeat winner since the 2000 season when the New York Yankees won their third World Series Ring in a row. In the College World Series, there hasn’t been a three-year championship streak since, oddly enough, the USC Trojans won five rings from 1970-1974. The average person can usually predict the winner of any basketball or football game by just picking the higher ranked team. On the other hand, in Baseball, there is always the possibility that the absolute worst team in the league will upset the No. 1 seed. Think back to 2012. The Houston Astros had one of its worst seasons in franchise history. They finished with a laughable 55-107 record and ended 42 games behind the division-winning Cincinnati Reds and 33 games behind a wild card berth. To put it lightly, they were horrible, but they still beat the World Series Champion San Francisco Giants once that season. Not to mention the fact that just five ...

Top 80 Outfielders for 2018 Fantasy Baseball

As we continue our 2018 fantasy Baseball rankings , we head into the homestretch of ranking hitters. That is the opening to my short film, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dorito. The main character has just been "Frito-laid off" and is described as Pringley and Ruffled. Last year, this post had Aaron Judge, Domingo Santana, Josh Bell and Hunter Renfroe. Well, so as much as things change, they stay the same. My point (PLEASE!) there is some value to still be found in the outfielders, it’s just a matter of finding it, like in the landmark film, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dorito. Washington Nationals’ Ryan Zimmerman, Sean Doolittle inducted into inaugural UVA baseball Hall of Fame class

Source: www.federalbaseball.com --- Sunday, January 28, 2018
Okay, maybe not the most prestigious Hall-of-Fame induction this weekend, but still impressive. The University of Virginia Baseball team has a semi-storied history since its founding in 1889, with eleven current UVA grads in the majors right now, and a slew of others in the past. Last weekend, they inducted their first class of Hall-of-Famers, which included, among 15 other names, Danny Hultzen, Brian Buchanan , and the Washington Nationals’ first baseman and closer, respectively, Ryan Zimmerman and Sean Doolittle. Zimmerman, who manned third base from 2003 to 2005 in Charlottesville, hit .355 while a Cavalier, and made it to the all-ACC team twice. Doolittle, who both pitched and played first from 2005 to 2007, had one season of overlap with Zimmerman, was a three-time All-American and the ACC Player of the Year in 2006. With the Nationals as the closest major-league team to Virginia, it’s either a funny coincidence or a completely logical development that the Nationals are the most- represented team in the UVA Hall of Fame. Both Zimmerman and Doolittle were proud of their alma matter when they talked to the local press ( NBC-29 Charlottesville ). “[It’s] pretty cool that they finally did something like this. With the amount of guys that the program has produced, and the teams that they’ve had... it’s good to honor the people that have been here in the past,” Zimmerman said. “I think the fact that there is a Hall of Fame now, I ...

Rays Release 2018 Schedule and Times

Source: dockoftherays.com --- Sunday, January 28, 2018
One of the most exciting teams in Baseball every year tends to be the Tampa Bay Rays. The Tampa Bay Rays are well known for always putting a competitive team on the field despite the fact that they always have one of the lowest payrolls in Baseball. To make matters worse, they also have to compete in the same division with the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox, which are two teams that often have among the highest payrolls. While the Rays tend to have a hard time keeping up in free agency, their unique and consistent ability to identify talent in the draft and through trades pays off every year. In 2017, they ended up finishing third in the division with a record of just under .500. Now the teams is returning a lot of talent and should be exciting to watch. Fans of the Rays recently received the final and full schedule for the 2018 MLB season (http://ift.tt/2nkLC7l). Fans of the Rays and the rest of Baseball already have a lot of dates circled on their calendar. The Rays will open up the MLB season on March 29 against the Boston Red Sox with a 4pm first pitch. The team will then end up playing 9 of their first 12 games during the day to start the year. Once the season gets going and into May, more and more of the games will be played at night. The Rays will follow a pretty typical schedule with night games starting around 7pm and Sunday afternoon games start at 1pm. Th ...

Brad Robinson discusses optimism for the Cubs & White Sox on Sports Feed

Source: wgntv.com --- Sunday, January 28, 2018
CHICAGO - At the moment, there is a decent amount of optimism around Chicago's two Baseball teams. Yes, there is some anxiety about what the team will do when it comes to Yu Darvish and Jake Arrieta, but the Cubs are still in a good position to return to the playoffs for a fourth-straight year in 2018. That's unlikely even in the best case scenarios for this year for the White Sox, but dreams of postseason in the future are quite strong as the team's prospect crop continues to grow. That optimism extended to the team's annual convention this weekend at Hilton Chicago, where the players and coaches were greeted by a sold out crowd. Brad Robinson of Newsradio 780 appeared on Sports Feed Sunday to discuss both teams with Jarrett Payton and Josh Frydman. You can watch Brad's segments on the show in the video above or below. ...

Former players come out in bunches for Hart Baseball Alumni Game

Source: signalscv.com --- Sunday, January 28, 2018
It’s not often that you get TV cameras and a plentiful crowd for a high school Baseball alumni game, but that’s become the norm for Hart over the years. When you have the kind of alumni base that the Indians boast it shouldn’t come as a shock, though. Former Indians Roc Murray and Tad Venger were inducted to the team’s Wall of Fame at the Hart Alumni Game on a windy Sunday afternoon at Hart. San Francisco Giants catcher Trevor Brown and Pittsburgh Pirates infield prospect Nick Valaika made up a sampling of the alumni on hand to watch and play in the three-inning exhibition. Santa Clarita City Councilman and Hart graduate Cameron Smyth threw out the first pitch for the contest. Many former Hart HS alumni came back to their alma mater on Sunday to play in the 2018 Hart Baseball Team Preview and Alumni Game, held at Hart’s campus in Newhall, Calif. Ryan Painter/The Signal. “It’s greatly appreciated when the guys come out here for a couple hours and shake hands and all that kind of stuff,” said Hart coach Jim Ozella. “It’s very inspiring for our players. These guys were just like these kids one day and the fun thing about Hart is that the list of alumni in the pros just keeps on growing.” Murray and Venger, who are first cousins, both graduated from Hart in 1977 following decorated prep careers. Murray was an All-Foothill league first teamer his senior year and has 33 years of high school Baseball coaching experience, including 23 y ...

How much will the Angels need Albert Pujols?

Source: www.fanragsports.com --- Sunday, January 28, 2018
We are quickly approaching the end of January, entering the traditional time period where every player to ever pick up a Baseball is “in the best shape of his life,” no matter how they spent their offseason. Not excluded from that pool is the Angels ’ Albert Pujols , who says, per Jon Heyman , that he’s ready to make a return to playing first base, and that he’s “100% healthy.” Albert Pujols is 38 years old. In 2017, there were only 15 active players between the ages of 37 and 38 — eight fielders and seven pitchers. He’s entering rarefied air as far as career length is concerned, though many have attempted to declare his career over before he was ready to retire over the last few years. If he doesn’t retire, the Angels hold his contract through 2021, or Pujols’ age 41 season. The Angels, however, are actually in a preseason position to contend for the first time in years. Smart moves and a maintenance season from the Los Angeles front office have made the Angels one of the teams to watch, if just to see how Shohei Ohtani handles moving to Major League Baseball. More importantly, they’re in a position to contend without even counting on the production of a player who, despite the “number of runs he knocked in,” had one of the worst offensive seasons of his career in 2017 while dealing with a chronic plantar fasciitis issue that kept him from playing in the field. Pujols says he can play first, however, and there’s likely somethin ...

Who Has More Heart Than Nick Diaz?

Source: forums.operationsports.com --- Sunday, January 28, 2018
Love him or hate him.... He's a born fighter. I don't know anyone who is more of a fighter than Nick. It's like you can hit him with a Baseball bat and his facial expression won't change and he'll continue walking forward. From the talking ****... To the never stopping until he's dead and always moving forward. The way he talks **** while at the staredown even... A lot of guys are very nervous at the staredown just before the fight. He channels that energy into pure **** you/kill or be killed mentality. The way he stood in front of Paul Daley the whole fight with complete composure was just bizarre (even after getting hurt). No ****s given at all. It can be any combat sport... But I'm struggling to think of anyone more game than Nick. ...
