It’s that time of year again! Your friends post “New Year, New Me!” scribes on Facebook or in really long blog posts. Or they wax poetically on Twitter about how they’re going to work out, eat well and lose weight… or they write a five-tweet thread about how they’re planning on staying off social media altogether only to return to Twitter two days later. It happens every year without fail. So, because it’s the thing to do and it’s the time when everyone does it, let’s come up with some New Year’s resolutions for Major League Baseball. First up, Hall of Fame voting protocol. Every year, I declare that I will not let myself get angry at public Hall of Fame ballots. I tell myself that the writers who are lucky enough to have a Hall of Fame vote have the right to choose whomever they want to enter Cooperstown. But, just like a New Year’s resolution, I crack and within the first five ballots, I get angry when I see someone choose only three players, or when I see them neglect to include a worthy Hall candidate because they assume everyone else will be voting for them. Even worse, I become apoplectic when someone turns in a blank ballot. Ford C. Frick Award winner Murray Chass did that last year. This year, thanks to the prodding of his son and grandson, Chass begrudgingly turned in a three-player ballot. So maybe Hall of Fame voting should change again.
