What to look forward to in MLB in 2018

Next year’s going to be good. That’s all we have to think about right now as the holidays wrap up — next year, when the temperature’s back above zero in the Northeast and there’s Baseball being played again. No matter what the calendar says, we’re not really in a new year until there’s something green growing somewhere nearby, and/or Baseball players have begun to report to camp for spring training. Around February we begin waking up again, but it won’t be until April that next year has truly arrived. What a year it’s going to be in MLB. For the first time since some flirtations in the 1950s and, on a full-time basis, since Babe Ruth dedicated himself fully to playing the outfield for the New York Yankees, Major League Baseball might have a true two-way player in new Los Angeles Angel Shohei Ohtani. He likely needs no reintroduction here — he has already become one of the most discussed stories of the offseason — but it’s worth noting that he likely would have been forced to specialize in hitting or pitching (likely pitching) at some point in his high school or college career had he come up through the American system, despite clearly having the professional skills to do both. Perhaps the funnest thing this year will be seeing if this experiment can work in a modern context — and how many games Ohtani is able to win on his own as the starting pitcher and primary vehicle for the offense.
