My Thirst for Baseball Quenched at Last Record: 2-0. Pace: 162-0. Change on 2017: +1. A new season has dawned and my old Beer-cap haunt has closed. 2017 saw the end of the much praised Papago Brewing Co, a watering hole that served as my HQ for almost all of the beers caps Iâve ever done. So with that era at a close I start a new era at Kings Beer & Wine in midtown Phoenix. This new base camp for my recap assent comes with new perks, specifically it eclipses Papagoâs paltry 30 taps with a impressive 76 taps. More importantly though Kings consistently has a vast array of âhazyâ IPAs to choose from; my new style of choice. Beer 1: Take Warning NE Style IPA by Dark Sky Hopefully youâre asking yourself right now âBy Vishnuâs beard, what is a hazy IPA?â Good question, a Hazy or New England Style IPA is an unfiltered and very juicy style of IPA. One that focuses on heavy floral aromas and juicy mouth feel versus the aggressive bitterness often associated with most West Coast style IPAs. But enough with the beer lesson, on to Baseball!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ray was so special to watch in almost all his starts last season. He gave us all hope that perhaps Zach might not be that no. 1 much longer. Not because of injury, regression or trade, but because Ray might just be that much better. Strange to write that as Ray gets out of the 1st frame seemingly a little shaky, but without any blood allowed. knock on wood I keep looking an ...

Marlins, Cubs Host MSD Families For Special Pregame Ceremony
Source: miami.cbslocal.com --- Friday, March 30, 2018
Follow CBSMIAMI.COM: Facebook | Twitter MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The Marlins, Cubs, Major League Baseball and especially Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School graduate and current Cubs star Anthony Rizzo have gone all out for the victims of the Parkland shooting. Rizzo is a Parkland native and school alum and ahead of Friday night’s game with the Marlins, some of the Stoneman Douglas students, victims, and loved ones of those who perished were guests of the Anthony Rizzo Foundation and the Miami Marlins. Rizzo took time out from batting practice to talk to family members who were invited to be part of the pregame festivities. Arielle Feis, the daughter of Coach Aaron Feis, Jesse Guttenberg, brother of Jaime Guttenberg, Corey Hixon, son of Athletic Director Chris Hixon, and Ben Wikander, who was shot and is still recovering, threw out the ceremonial first pitches. Aaron Feis, Jaime Guttenberg and Chris Hixon were three of the 17 people killed by the teenage gunman on Valentine’s Day at the Parkland school. During batting practice, the families visited with Rizzo as his personal guests. After the Valentine’s Day shooting, Rizzo left Cubs’ Spring Training in Arizona and came right to Parkland to show support for the students and teachers from his alma mater. The families are grateful for the gesture. “What Rizzo has done for us, the Marlins, all of South Florida, it’s the little things like that that make the difference,” said Eric Wikand ...

Arizona jumps all over another Rockies pitcher, this time Tyler Anderson, as Colorado remains winless
Source: www.denverpost.com --- Friday, March 30, 2018
PHOENIX — There was nothing sinister or conspiratorial behind Major League Baseball schedule-makers sending the Rockies right back to the spot of their postseason demise, but their season-opening series against the Diamondbacks made for some early concerns. Arizona last October outlasted Colorado in a one-game, wild-card playoff with a few more timely hits and a more experienced pitching staff, and the D-backs pounced on the Rockies on opening day by grinding down Jon Gray . Friday’s encore, then, was another reason for worry. Nick Ahmed drove in a career-high five runs in Arizona’s drawn-out 9-8 victory over winless Colorado, but the Rockies tripped further into their season still wondering about their starting pitching. Lefty Tyler Anderson lasted just 2 1/3 innings. The Rockies have now lost five consecutive games against the Diamondbacks, dating to last year, and still cannot erase that lingering loss that ended their 2017. The cliches are coming at them quickly. “Is this a whole new season? It’s a whole new season, yeah,” first baseman Ian Desmond said. “That’s the beauty of Baseball, there’s always a tomorrow.” After two games, the Rockies have yet to find their footing on the mound. Gray and Anderson combined lasted just 6 1/3 innings and gave up 10 runs, for a 14.22 ERA. The D-backs jumped all over Anderson in the first inning, sending eight batters to the plate as A.J. Pollock doubled in two runs and Ahmed yanked a thre ...

Baseball takes opener against Texas, and your Easter weekend calendar. This is not the most eventful Friday for the Wildcats, as both tennis and rowing are off this weekend and golf is idle until Monday. As a result, we send you into Final Four weekend with an abbreviated Slate. Football Yes, football is at the top of today’s menu today because yesterday’s football news was the biggest item in the kitchen. Last night, Dominique Heath tweeted this announcement: Committed #AppNation pic.twitter.com/EkSMOpHehx — R.I.P QUAVO (@MrHBO_OnDemand) March 30, 2018 Because Heath will have graduated by the end of the semester, he’ll be immediately eligible to play for the Mountaineers. He’ll be joining another former Wildcat in Boone, as Corey Sutton transferred there last off-season. Appalachian State, the reigning co-champions of the Sun Belt, wrapped a 9-4 campaign in 2017 by routing Toledo 34-0 in the Dollar General Bowl in Mobile. The Mountaineers actually return a bunch of production at wideout in 2018, so it will be interesting to see whether Heath jumps into the starting lineup or has to fight for snaps. Regardless, we wish Dom the best. Although his numbers declined in 2017, he was still a critical component, and he provided enough moments that we’ll always think of him as EMAW. Still however, at times, he does things to wow us and make us realize he really is that special. Perhaps, in another life, Sidney Crosby should’ve been a Baseball player. Little League families building Ridgefield’s baseball future brick by brick
Source: https://ift.tt/1cKcpOl --- Friday, March 30, 2018
As Ridgfield Little League prepares to open a new lighted field on Route 7 in the coming months, dozens of past and present Little League families are leaving their own personalized mark on the project through buying an engraved brick to be displayed at the new field. Retired Judge Joe Egan, like many others, feels a brick is a way to memorialize the memories. Egan ended up buying two bricks, one in memory of his brother Tom and a second for himself. “We always had fun playing Little League and my brother died about 10 years ago, so I really got the brick for him in his memory and I figured what the heck I’ll get one for myself too.” Judge Egan recalled his own playing days and two different coaching stints. “It really reminds me of just how small the town was back when we played. You knew everyone in the league” he said. “Then I coached when my kids played and then about 20 years later I came back as an assistant coach when I didn’t have any kids on the team. It was was the most fun I’ve ever had.” Dozens of other Ridgefield families are leaving their mark on the new field as well, including the Gitlin family, whose son is just starting his Little League career and looking forward to one day playing under the lights. “We bought two bricks, both to support Ridgefield Little League Baseball and also as a shout out to our son Zachary who got “Baseball fever” last season” said Jonathan Gitlin. “It’s also to support the great coache ...

Blue And Orange And Gray
Source: thesportsdaily.com --- Friday, March 30, 2018
Opening Day is about rebirth and rejuvenation. To find out of a ballplayer’s passing on Opening Day is to mix that with reflection and sorrow. When the circle of Baseball life starts and ends on the same day, there’s conflict. You want to run towards 2018. but there’s nothing but a slow pace that envelops you. It’s like a bad dream where something is holding you back. Rusty Staub passed away early on Opening Day . The gray, misty weather perfectly reflected this. If ever hearts could soar and sink at the same time, it was Opening Day 2018. I’m sure Rusty was never far from anybody’s mind as the sights and sounds of Thursday’s victory over the Cardinals was mixed with the memories of Staub getting pinch hit after pinch hit. Or cementing his status as playoff hero. Or the good he did for the people of our city in his post-playing days. Opening Days are about older generations passing along the stories of years past. All the stories were about Rusty on Thursday. The symmetry of Rusty passing on Opening Day against the Cardinals was that Rusty’s final Opening Day was against the Cardinals. It was Gary Carter’s first Opening Day as a Met, where he hit a game winning home run off Neil Allen in the tenth inning. For me to say that watching the Cardinals play the Mets in New York seemed like it could have been 1985 if you squinted hard enough would probably be a hackneyed attempt at poetic license. Except it was really true for me. Ther ...

South Side Morning 5: Opening Day Dingers
Source: southside.locals.baseballprospectus.com --- Thursday, March 29, 2018
1. The anticipation and excitement that comes with Opening Day make it almost impossible to not overreact, whether it’s to something bad or something good. Any reasonable Baseball observer knows what happens only matters as much as any single game can. It’s an oft-repeated sentiment: It’s just one game. It’s a long season. Small sample sizes. Etc. It doesn’t matter. We know in our well-conditioned brain that in a few weeks or a month, what happened Thursday isn’t going to be fresh in our memories, and there’s a good chance whatever the outcomes of those games are going to have very little barrings on how these teams and players are performing in Game 31 or 62 or 100. But we react to the good and the bad with a level of excitement that isn’t seen for most median regular season games, because it’s Opening Day. It’s exciting. After five months, Baseball games matter again. The White Sox 14-7 victory over the Royals didn’t follow any typical script. The White Sox hit six home runs — three by Matt Davidson, two by Tim Anderson, and one by Jose Abreu — in coming back from an early 4-0 deficit to wallop a division rival. All three of Davidson’s bombs registered at a higher mph than any one he hit last season, per Statcast, and he became the first player in the Statcast era to hit three home runs that all registered faster than 110 mph. It was the kind of performance that’s easy to dream on. No, the White Sox are going to average 14 run ...

Rockies drop Opening Day to Dbacks, 8-2
Source: www.purplerow.com --- Thursday, March 29, 2018
It’s just one game, even if it was pretty ugly. The first game of the Baseball season is always an indicator for how things will go through the summer months. That is how we know that Matt Davidson is going to break the single season home run record, Clayton Kershaw is heading for the worst season of his career, and the Miami Marlins are going to be a sideshow. Okay, sarcasm aside, one of those might actually be true. But when one has been so long without Baseball it’s easy to- put a lot into one game, especially when it turns into an ugly 8-2 loss. But, and this is the beauty of Baseball, it is just one game and the Rockies and Diamondbacks will play another one tomorrow. Make no mistake, though: this game was ugly. The Rockies seemed to take all of the fears and criticisms of fans and pundits, from an offense that couldn’t find any consistency to a young starting pitcher and middle relief being exposed. It managed to suck the fun out of what is supposed to be one of the most fun days of the year. Opening Day started out very fun, as DJ LeMahieu hit the first home run of the Rockies’ season in the top of the first. It stopped being fun almost immediately after that as the rest of the game played out in a manner eerily reminiscent of the last time the Rockies played at Chase Field. Jon Gray, struggling with his command, gave up three runs in the first inning. He managed to settle down and avoid major trouble in the next few inni ...

Cardinals Drop Season Opener to Mets 9-4 in New York
Source: fox2now.com --- Thursday, March 29, 2018
The 2018 Baseball season started off with a thud for the St. Louis Cardinals. They lost their opening game of the year to the Mets, 9-4 in New York on Thursday. Carlos Martinez struggled with control for four and a third innings before being pulled. Martinez (0-1), ended up allowing five runs, four of them earned. He also walked six batters. Jose Martinez was the hitting star for the Cardinals. He had three hits, including a solo home run to go along with two RBI. Yadier Molina tied a team record with his fourth opening day home run. Molina's two run blast off the left field foul pole gave the Cards a 2-1 second inning lead. Matt Bowman, coming out of the Cardinals bullpen was ineffective, allowing three run in a third of an inning pitched. But 21 year old rookie Jordan Hicks pitched a scoreless seventh inning, that included his first Major League strikeout. The Cardinals return to action on Saturday afternoon with game two of their three game set against the Mets in New York. Michael Wacha will start on the mound on Saturday for the Redbirds. Fox 2 Sports Director Martin Kilcoyne was in New York to cover the Cardinals opening day game. ...

Giancarlo Stanton’s Two-Homer Yankees Debut
Source: diamondhoggers.com --- Thursday, March 29, 2018
[ Box Score ] The Yankees were up in Toronto for their opener, and all is right in the Bronx tonight. As right as it ever were. Giancarlo Stanton is the story of all of Baseball at the conclusion of opening day. He homered twice, once to the opposite field and once to center to pace the Yankees. His first put them on the board and gave them a 2-0 lead. The rest of the league is on notice . The big guy is happy, and the Yankees are going to be very, very good. Aaron Boone won his managerial debut. Luis Severino got the win and didn’t allow a run. Aaron Judge got in on the act. The Yankees are going to be a force to be reckoned with, with someone different donning the cape and playing the hero every night. ...

Dodgers Drop 2018 Opener 1-0 To Giants
Source: diamondhoggers.com --- Thursday, March 29, 2018
[ Box Score ] Tonight had a strange feel to it. Still, it was Opening Day Baseball. I got to eat great food, I got to spend a little time with my son, and I got to watch the game with my dad. All in all, that’s a pretty good day. And by good food, I had a couple Chicago Dogs. Unbelievable. But when it got down to game time – I knew the Dodgers were losing this game as -310 favorites for a long time. I knew Ty Blach would match Clayton Kershaw step-for-step. He did just that. Corey Seager, Cody Bellinger, Chris Taylor were all held hitless. It was a little bit of a lifeless opener for the Dodgers; and suddenly things feel bleak and barren in a hurry. It was pretty cool before the game – Kirk Gibson threw out the first pitch. It was a picture perfect 70 degree night in Los Angeles. But this one goes down as a 1-0 loss on a Joe Panik home run down the right field line. The Dodgers are 0-1; whereas they started 2017 on a winning note. This season just has a different feel to it already. Tomorrow is a new day. Alex Wood takes the ball against Johnny Cueto. It would be nice to see the Dodgers respond in a big way. Tomorrow even being game two of 162 will show us a lot about the Dodgers and just who they are as a team. ...

OFI 429: What Farmers & Ranchers Have In Common With Musicians, Actors & Baseball Players
Source: www.offincome.com --- Thursday, March 29, 2018
SHOW NOTES KEY IDEAS: Hi everybody. This episode is intended to applaud farmers and to demonstrate that those of us that want to make our livings from the land and live this lifestyle are as dedicated to our way of life as anyone in the United States. This dawned on me a while back, but the only other career subset I can think of that do what farmers and ranchers do are celebrities. Stick with me for a second on this. Depending on the year 80-90% of farmers in the United States are relying on some form of income from off the farm to support their households. When we go through low milk, low beef or low commodity prices you will see off farm income account for over 90% of all household income. The dream is to farm or ranch and to do nothing but farm or ranch. But the reality is that most folks in the United States are working at least two jobs to make this happen. The cost of medical insurance and the volatility in input and commodity prices forces us to do this if we want to stay in this profession. I spoke with a professor at Texas A&M a while back, and she told me that in the great State of Texas they are having a very difficult time getting young people to return to the farm and don’t even think about getting non-farm kids to choose farming or ranching as a career. Why? Well, the young people who grew up on farms or ranches see better options elsewhere. They can go to the oil fields and make $60,000-$80,000 of guaranteed mone ...

Teams Mull Construction for Downtown Boise Stadium
Source: https://ift.tt/1jQkhVs --- Thursday, March 29, 2018
AthleticBusiness.com has partnered with LexisNexis to bring you this content. Copyright 2018 BridgeTower Media All Rights Reserved Idaho Business Review The owners of the Boise Hawks Baseball team would like to have a downtown Boise stadium ideal for soccer and Baseball ready for the United Soccer League season starting in spring 2020. The open questions: Where would a downtown stadium be built and when would construction start? The only agreed-to date in play right now is October, at which time the sale is set to close on the 11-acre St. Luke Health System property at Americana Boulevard and Shoreline Drive to Greenstone Properties. Greenstone managing director Chris Schoen has proposed for that site a 5,000-fixed-seat soccer/Baseball stadium and accompanying commercial-retail-residential complex. Schoen remains confident a stadium will be complete in time for the 2020 soccer and Baseball seasons. But since November, at the encouragement of Boise Mayor David Bieter, Schoen has considered moving his project to the proposed College of Western Idaho Boise campus site at Main Street and Whitewater Park Boulevard. That's when someone suggested to Bieter that Schoen and CWI swap properties. The mayor presented the idea to Schoen and CWI President Bert Glandon. Schoen warmed up to the idea of moving his $70 million stadium-residential-office-retail project to the CWI site, but in early March was still evaluating the CWI site. For the ...

NL Central 2018 Fantasy – Progress and Regress
Source: lastwordonbaseball.com --- Thursday, March 29, 2018
Over the next few days, we will be looking at some players in each division set to either progress or regress in 2018. As we know, in the world of fantasy Baseball, it is important to look to the upcoming season and be ahead of the curve. Whether it’s to avoid paying for a player who will take a step back, or draft a player who is a bargain. Sabermetrics and advanced stats have given us many tools to evaluate players and try to predict how their seasons will play out. However, all analytics are not created equal. There are so many statistics nowadays that figuring out what to look at can be a daunting task. While there is still no one particular metric that is foolproof, there are some that can point us in the right direction. We recently ran through the AL East, NL East and the AL Central . Now let’s take a look at the NL Central 2018. NL Central 2018 Fantasy Progression and Regression Chicago Cubs PROGRESS - Willson Contreras is the third best hitter in the Cubs lineup. That being said, he will probably bat cleanup this season. Contreras has earned it. He has shown improvement at the plate. Approaching his 26th birthday and having over 700 PA under his belt, he is poised for a big year. Over the past two years, Contreras has improved his FB rate from 27.7% to 29.3%, his hard hit rate from 32.3% to 35.5% and his BB/K from 0.39 to 0.46. While his HR/FB rate may drop slightly from a high 25.9% in 2017, it should remain around 20- ...

While Baseball brims with excitement for the onset of the 2018 season, there’s also sad news for fans and industry folk alike to mourn on Thursday, as Bill Madden of the New York Daily News reports that six-time All-Star Rusty Staub has passed away just days before what would have been his 74th birthday. Staub had previously survived a severe heart attack in 2015, but as Madden notes, he’d been in the hospital for the past eight weeks battling a blood infection and kidney failure before experiencing multiple organ failure. Staub spent nine of his 23 Major League seasons starring for the Mets, for whom he batted .276/.358/.419 in two separate stints, although his best seasons very arguably came with the Houston organization and the now-defunct Expos in his mid-20s. From 1967-71, Staub posted a terrific .302/.397/.472 slash with 94 homers — good for a 148 OPS+ and five consecutive trips to the Midsummer Classic. In all, Staub’s outstanding career drew to a close with 2,716 hits, 292 homers, 499 doubles, 47 triples, 1189 runs scored, 1466 RBIs and more walks (1255) than strikeouts (888). He batted .279/.362/.431 in 11,229 plate appearances across 23 seasons split between the Mets, Astros/Colt 45s, Expos, Tigers and Rangers. After his playing days, Staub set to work on helping those less fortunate than he’d been in life, establishing the Rusty Staub Foundation , whose mission to this day is to “give children the opportunity to live ...

The Never-Ending, Four-Color Festival: Shows And Events

By Tom Spurgeon * more events outside of the San Diego Convention Center , this time building on recent activity in the Baseball park. * everything about the actual event described here sounds gross to me . * the Crumb room has been retired . I guess it's sort of interesting in that the Eisner Level endures. There are certainly easily discoverable and difficult to reconcile elements of Eisner's legacy -- including some actions that extend beyond art and into industry practice. * how to apply to Autoptic . Those are nice table prices. * I actually sort of like the idea of artists having access to wider representation at comics shows, but I really deplore the idea of extending that to attendees and having the convention itself involved in the process . Three Boilers Start 2018 Season on MLB 40-man Rosters
Source: www.hammerandrails.com --- Thursday, March 29, 2018
Purdue’s great 2012 team is coming into its own in the Majors. It’s Opening Day across Major League Baseball! Normally we track Purdue football and basketball players at the next level, but the Baseball team’s success from six years ago continues to pay dividends. Last season was the first year, maybe ever, where four different Purdue players played in at least one Major League game during the same season. That seems unlikely this year with Josh Lindblom returning to play in Korea, but three players will be on the 40-man roster to start the season. Kevin Plawecki - New York Mets - Kevin was the No. 35 overall pick in 2012, one of the highest picks in Purdue Baseball history. He has struggled somewhat since making his Major league debut in 2015. He batted .219 as a rookie in 73 games in 2015 and .197 in 48 games in 2016. that had him going back and forth between the big club and Triple-A. last year he started to click, however. He batted .260 with 3 HR and 13 RBI in 37 games. that improvement, plus a solid spring, led to the surprise of him being named the opening day starter at catcher : Plawecki had a solid spring, posting a .747 OPS after a torrid start. It’s expected he and d’Arnaud will share the position close to equally this season. Such an arrangement proved successful for the Mets in the final six weeks of last season, when Plawecki was among the team’s better performers. Nick Wittgren - Miami Marlins - Wittgren made his ...

Purdue Baseball: Kevin Plawecki Gets the Nod
Source: www.hammerandrails.com --- Thursday, March 29, 2018
A former Boiler will start on opening day! Baseball is often ignored in college athletics. I for one, really enjoy Purdue Baseball. The short 10 minute drive to Alexander Field in the middle of the spring is always a great time. Especially during a mid-week match up, like what they had last night. See, on mid-week match ups, admission, hot dogs, nachos and Domestic Beer is all $2, it makes for a great time. It has been a while since Plawecki was at Purdue, but he is getting the opening day nod for the New York Mets at catcher. The Mets' Opening Day lineup: Brandon Nimmo, CF Yoenis Cespedes, LF Jay Bruce, RF Asdrubal Cabrera, 2B Todd Frazier, 3B Adrian Gonzalez, 1B Kevin Plawecki, C Noah Syndergaard, RHP Amed Rosario, SS — SportsNet New York (@SNYtv) March 28, 2018 Plawecki has rotated at catcher for the Mets - but has not been the opening day stater for them until this year. Last season, he appeared in 37 games for the Mets. He had a .260 batting average, 3 home runs and 13 RBI’s. He will look to better his stats this upcoming season as it appears he is ready for a heavier workload behind the plate. If you want to watch, you can watch Kevin behind the plate today at 1:10 - they play the Cardinals. Best of luck, Kevin! Boiler Up! ...

Quick Links: Legendary Baseball Squads Added To Oregon State Hall Of Fame
Source: www.buildingthedam.com --- Thursday, March 29, 2018
The back-to-back champs on the diamond are getting some more recognition. Iconic Teams Highlight Hall of Fame Class (Oregon State Athletics) The Oregon State Hall of Fame added some new members to it’s hallowed halls earlier this week, highlighted by the addition of the 2006 and 2007 Beavers Baseball teams, which claimed back-to-back National Championships under head coach Pat Casey. The school also inducted two volleyball teams and three iconic student-athletes to the 2018 class, as well. The official induction ceremony will take place later this year on October 19th. 2018 WNBA Mock Draft: #12 Overall - Marie Gülich (DraftSite) Beavers center Marie Gülich may have had her fantastic college career end on a sour note at the hands of Louisville, but it’s most certainly not the end of the road for the talented 6’ 5” stand-out. According to DraftSite.com, Gülich is being projected as a late first-round pick in the upcoming WNBA Draft, in which she’ll be selected by the Phoenix Mercury. Beavers look to end Civil War losing streak (Gazette Times) There’s apparently another university that the Beavers share the state with and as far as softball goes, Oregon State hasn’t been able to beat that squad in quite some time. Let’s just leave it at that. However, the ladies on the diamond are hoping to change their luck starting on Thursday afternoon, when they host a top-five Ducks team in Corvallis. On the year, Oregon State is 19-13 overall ...

It’s Opening Day!
Source: www.overthemonster.com --- Thursday, March 29, 2018
It’s a very special day to be a Baseball fan Opening Day is one of the biggest days of the year for sports fans around the country, and has been for over a century. It’s a day with so much build-up and anticipation it’s almost impossible not to be excited. That said, I don’t even really remember my first Opening Day, or at least the one I first got excited about. You see, when I was a kid, there was always some sort of sport on my living room TV. Eventually, Baseball would join the mix but I don’t really remember the anticipation. This isn’t to say I didn’t love Baseball — the season was always my favorite time of year — but I will say that the anticipation of Opening Day didn’t come until I was older, and it’s gotten more pronounced as I’ve gotten older. There’s something about this day that brings me back to those days when I didn’t really care about Opening Day, and it’s a truly incredible feeling. You see, even though I didn’t get all riled up for the start of the season, Baseball has basically always been my favorite sport. There were some winters here and there that basketball surpassed it for a minute, but ultimately it always came back to Baseball. I’m not even sure how it happened, to be honest. One day I just woke up and it happened, or that’s what it seems like. My family likes Baseball, but I wouldn’t necessarily call us a Baseball family. My brother’s favorite sport was Baseball growing up, and while that’s no longe ...

Eight Milestones to Watch for in 2018
Source: thesportsdaily.com --- Wednesday, March 28, 2018
For the first time ever (yes…ever!), all 30 Major League teams will be playing Baseball on Opening Day. Sure, sure…the Washington-Cincinnati game has already been postponed, but it’s the thought that counts, right? Anyway, with a new season comes a lot of new questions. Questions like…how many home runs will Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge hit? Will Ichiro find the Fountain of Youth in Seattle? And, naturally, will somebody ever buy Don Mattingly’s car ? Out of that uncertainty blooms a myriad of things that might (and might not) happen, so with that…here are eight milestones to watch for in 2018. ALBERT PUJOLS A season ago, Albert Pujols was on everyone’s watchlist as he was approaching 600 career home runs. This season, with 2968 hits, it’s all about dude’s quest to become just the fourth player (Hank Aaron, Willie Mays and Alex Rodriguez are the other three) with 600 home runs and 3000 hits. But, sadly, we might be waiting a while. It almost took Pujols until Mother’s Day to get his 32 nd base knock last season. By comparison, in 2008, Pujols’ second MVP season, he had more than 32 hits by the last week in April. After Pujols gets to 3000 hits, he can focus on joining Aaron and Rodriguez as the only players with 3000 hits, 600 home runs and 2000 RBI. The Los Angeles Angels slugger enters 2018 82 shy of the milestone. Fun fact. Did you know that Albert Pujols has grounded into more double plays (362) that anyone else? It’s t ...
