For the second-straight weekend, Butch Thompson’s team found itself in a weekend rubber game fighting for position near the top spot of the SEC. And once again, the Tigers pulled off impressive an impressive Game 3 win — this time against Mississippi State. Auburn ( 32-14) defeated the Bulldogs 5-1 to conclude a Saturday doubleheader at Dudy Noble Field in Starkville, Miss. Though Thompson said ace Casey Mize would be available for this three-game series earlier in the week Andrew Mitchell started for Auburn. As the game went on it became clear that Mize would remained sidelined. Still, Auburn’s efforts at the plate, as well as strong fielding and clutch relief pitching helped the Tigers in the Magnolia State. First freshman Conor Davis, who had two hits earlier in the day, drilled a two-run single to put the Tigers up 2-0. After that, Dylan Ingram — the first baseman hit a grand slam to give Auburn a big lead in the first game Saturday — batted a two-run homer to left field (no outs).
