Humans Now Watch A Billion Hours Of YouTube Every Single Day

Source: http://ift.tt/zP5LE8 - Tuesday, February 28, 2017
Congratulations world, we have now collectively reached the milestone of being able to say that we watch a billion hours of YouTube between us, every single day. And just think, your mum said you’d never amount to anything. This proof that mankind is destined to fail (and that we all need desperately need a new hobby) was announced in an official YouTube blog on Monday. For the last few years, the video platform has been moving its focus on to engagement time on videos, rather than the number of video clicks, and it seems it is finally paying off. Cristos Goodrow, VP of Engineering at YouTube, said : “Let’s put that in perspective. If you were to sit and watching a billion hours of YouTube, it would take you over 100,000 years.” type=type=RelatedArticlesblockTitle=Related... + articlesList=58aaf8cee4b037d17d299cc0,5874b2b0e4b0cf4ed40f9a06,5890c7bee4b03ab749ddc2f8 To think, 100,000 years ago, our ancestors were still crafting stone tools in a dark cave and working on migrating out of Africa (and they didn’t even know what a meme was).  And if you spent 100,000 years travelling at the speed of light you could travel from one end of the Milky Way to the other. Bullpen Potpourri

Source: thesportsdaily.com --- Monday, February 27, 2017
There was a Baseball game in between Tim Tebow sound bites on Monday. And in that Baseball games, the results were hot and cold. Jeurys Familia had his first outing in the spring, and more importantly than giving up a run because he didn’t cover first base right away, the balls hit off him were absolutely tattooed up the middle. If that was a rust shaking outing, then get ready because when he comes back from his inevitable suspension, he’ll have a couple more. Rafael Montero, on the other hand, pitched a stellar two innings against the Houston Astros, as did Hansel Robles. Both pitchers can play important roles in the bullpen with Familia’s suspension looming … Robles especially. While Montero’s shine has dulled a bit, if he can regain some control and stop walking people (he had very good command on Monday), there just might be a role for him. Now Tom Gorzellany, on the other hand, didn’t help himself. He’s fancied as a lefty specialist, but against the Astros in the ninth inning he gave up a hit and a walk to lefties to lead off the frame, and then A.J. Reed smacked an RBI single to right to tie the game at 2-2. So three lefties against Gorzellany, three baserunners. He wasn’t great against the righties either. He walked righty Anibal Sierra (a sub-rookie ball player who didn’t even have a name on the back of his jersey) to give up the lead, and then a two run single to Tony Kemp to end his nightmare as the Mets lost 5-2 . Girls basketball: Norton, Hoban advance to meet in Division II district final

Source: www.ohio.com --- Tuesday, February 28, 2017
HARTVILLE: Norton sophomore Bryana Housley isn’t ready for the season to come to an end anytime soon. Neither are her teammates. The Panthers played fast, with a sense of urgency, and made shots in a 70-53 win Monday over Marlington in a Division II district semifinal at Lake High School. Norton (20-5) will meet Archbishop Hoban (17-8) in the district final at 7 p.m. Thursday at Lake. The Knights beat Tallmadge 33-28 in Monday’s first semifinal. Hoban topped Norton in the Lake district final last year before bowing out to Ottawa-Glandorf in the regional bracket at Ontario. Norton coach Brian Miller praised his players for battling all evening Monday, and said Housley was on the floor “at least a dozen times” going for the ball. Norton put together a 23-0 run in the second half to separate from the Dukes (17-7). “I told the girls at halftime, ‘We are not playing Norton Basketball,’ ” Miller said. “We were reaching and the calls were going against us a little bit, so we needed to gather ourselves and play our style, which is to trap hard, keep our spacing and quit reaching. “We knew eventually the pressure would get to Marlington. We have played teams all year with this relentless style, and usually our opponents will wear out about the middle of the third quarter.” Norton held a 38-34 halftime lead after being locked in a 14-14 tie at the end of the first quarter. The Panthers’ huge run turned a 44-42 lead in the middle of the thi ...

Fears of unintentional racism as Apple launches line of ethnically diverse emoji

Source: www.newsbiscuit.com --- Tuesday, February 28, 2017
Industry experts predict a sharp increase in the number of mobile phone users choosing voice calls over text messages for fear of being branded a horrible racist following Apple’s unveiling of a new line of ethnically diverse emoji. The cartoonish face icons included in Apple’s iOS and OS X operating systems were given a splash of colour by the Cupertino-based company earlier this week in order to make them more inclusive and ethnically diverse. But users of Apple’s products are now gravely concerned that their misuse of the icons might cause everyone around them to hate them and chase them with sticks. ‘Am I supposed to use the emoji that most looks like me, or the one that looks like the person I’m sending the message to?’ asked one distressed Apple fan on an online forum. ‘Apple really needs to make this clearer!’ White, middle-class Britons especially seem to be unsure of how they are supposed to use the new icons. ‘Would always using the Caucasian-looking one be misconstrued by my friends and coworkers as an indication of my secret desire for an all-white Britain?’ asked a concerned Mac user from Croydon. ‘Maybe I’ll just use them all in order. Not that there’s an ‘order’ to race or anything. I mean—oh god, am I racist? I am, aren’t I?’ With no official guidelines to refer to, Apple users around the globe have set about deciding their own rules for how and when to use the new emojis in their messages. Others, meanwhile, are ...

Now Samsung is launching two new tablets that feature even more improvements on the productivity tablet idea. The Galaxy Book Samsung may not have made any announcements regarding the Galaxy S8 smartphone just yet, but it still has some fancy new hardware for you at MWC 2017. In addition to the Tab S3, the company is showing off two new hybrids. They are calling them the Galaxy Book. They’re both 10- and 12-inch Windows 10 tablets that support new S Pen features. Both the hybrids come with keyboards and are light enough to carry around. Two Versions The new 12-inch Samsung Galaxy Book is the latest tablet. It’s 10-inch version offers lesser specs but is nice enough. In terms of characteristics, the closest match to the Samsung Galaxy Book is Microsoft’s Surface Pro 4. They can accommodate documents and browser Windows when you use them in landscape mode with a keyboard. Comes with a Stylus Samsung’s Galaxy Book weighs around 1.6 pounds. Balanced scoring allows Lone Peak to coast past Syracuse OREM — At the end of the Lone Peak victory over Syracuse Monday night at UVU, one aspect of the Knights play stood out above all others — balance. The Knights racked up an impressive 81 points against the Titans, though perhaps what was more impressive than the total of points was how Lone Peak got them. Chantry Ross led the way for his top-seeded team with 17 points, but he was one of five players to reach double figures. Nathan Harkness and Max Brenchley each scored 13 points in the victory, while Steven Ashworth added 11. In addition to those five, five more Knights found their way into the scoring column on the evening, including Jackson Brinkerhoff, Jaxon Pollard, Taylor Madson, Malachi Mills and Dyson Frank. Incredibly, with all the different contributors, Lone Peak shot 52.4 percent from the field, as well as 34.8 percent from behind the arc, and 70 percent from the charity stripe. The first round victory mirrored a season-long trend for the Knights. On the season, Lone Peak had four players average double figures in scoring, with two more averaging over five points a game. “We executed well tonight,” Lone Peak coach David Evans said. “It was a good start to the tournament.” If the Knights can maintain such a balanced attack, not to mention if they can continue to assist on so many baskets (Lone Peak had 22 assists on 33 made shots, with Steven Ashworth dishing out 1 ...

High school boys basketball: Lone Peak makes easy work of Syracuse in first round matchup

Source: www.deseretnews.com --- Monday, February 27, 2017
OREM — When the final whistle blew Monday night at UVU’s UCCU Center, the Lone Peak Knights stood well-above the competition, high enough in fact to justify any and all preseason hype. Led by Chantry Ross, the Knights pummeled the Syracuse Titans 81-56, for the stress-free, first round victory. “We got into a good rhythm tonight,” Lone Peak coach David Evans said. “This was a good way to start the state tournament.” Ross led the Knights with 17 points, while four other Lone Peak players managed to find their way into double figure scoring. Maxwell McGrath scored 15 points, Nathan Harkness and Mex Brenchley each scored 13, and Steven Ashworth chipped in 11 for the victorious Knights. Despite the lopsided final score, it was a contest early. Through the first quarter, the Titans appeared to be more than a match for the top-seeded Knights. Lone Peak struck first, with point guard Chantry Ross and his four quick points, setting the tone. And yet, Syracuse had a floor general of their own. Brock Gilbert was a force in the first, and as he set up his teammates for easy baskets, the Titans managed to keep pace. Lone Peak created a small amount of separation towards the end of the first period, to the tune of four points, but even that couldn’t be maintained as Kaedon Nye scored for Syracuse right before the buzzer. After one, the Knights led 17-15 and looked a little vulnerable. It was all fool's gold for the Titans, however, as Syracus ...

Skull Session: Urban Meyer Talks Real Life Wednesdays, Malik Barrow Could Be Headed for a Breakout, and Scouting Raekwon McMillan

Urban Meyer is currently en route to the legendary pirate den of Nassau as part of the Buckeye Cruise for Cancer. Nobody can convince me Meyer enjoys being surrounded at sea by thousands of rabid Buckeye fans for a week, but that's probably another topic for another day. Before he left for the annual anti-cancer banger, Meyer sat down with 10TV's Dom Tiberi and broke bread over recruiting and "Real Life Wednesdays." From 10tv.com : Meyer is very proud of what he has created at Ohio State in preparing his players for life after football. His players now meet and network with business leaders. Players are also expected to get internships and job shadow. Meyer said it’s much more than X’s and O’s at Ohio State and he says that is what parents and athletes should expect. “I think that student-athletes have gotten the short end of the stick for many years by universities and I am guilty of it myself for many years," he said. “A powerful university like OSU should do more than get you a degree. It should get you a career." What amuses me is coaches going to bat for their players all the way until the topic of paying them comes up. Still, Meyer deserves credit for what he's created at Ohio State. I'm old enough to remember when Florida fans tried to say Meyer would only recruit thugs wh ...

Source: bleacherreport.com --- Tuesday, February 28, 2017
German Football icon Bastian Schweinsteiger offered support to Babak Rafati in 2011 after the former Bundesliga referee attempted suicide. According to Swiss newspaper  Blick (h/t Mark Lovell of ESPN FC), the Manchester United star, then of Bayern Munich, reached out to Rafati during a tough time in his life and career. “Mr Rafati , there's often setbacks in life,” Schweinsteiger is said to have stated. “But you have to bounce back each time. I wish you all the best.” Speaking about the exchange, Rafati said it meant a lot to him. “I was very deeply moved,” said the former official. “He didn't have to do that. He knew I would never referee again after this incident. It was an incredibly humane gesture.” As noted by Lovell, Rafati has penned a book on his struggles during his time as a referee in German Football, including depression. At the time, Schweinsteiger was starring in Bayern Munich’s midfield setup and was rated among the best players in world Football having starred at the 2010 UEFA European Championship. The German eventually departed the Allianz Arena in 2015 for Manchester United, having won eight German titles and the UEFA Champions League in 2013. Blockchain gains as software giants form alliance

Source: www.techeye.net --- Tuesday, February 28, 2017
PMorgan Chase , Microsoft, Intel and more than two dozen other companies have teamed up to develop standards and technology to make it easier for enterprises to use blockchain code Ethereum. The move is seen as the latest push by large firms to move toward distributed ledger systems and a considerable move forward for the bitcoin based tech. The Enterprise Ethereum Alliance (EEA) will work to enhance the privacy, security and scalability of the Ethereum blockchain, making it better suited to business applications, according to the founding companies. Members of the 30-strong group also include Accenture, Banco Santander, Credit Suisse Group and shedloads of other bankers and financial groups. The EEA joins a growing list of joint initiatives by large companies aiming to take advantage of blockchain, a shared digital record of transactions that is maintained by a network of computers rather than a centralised authority. Companies in a wide range of industries are hoping that it can help them streamline some of their processes, such as the clearing and settling of financial securities. Ethereum, a type of blockchain that can be used to develop decentralised applications, was invented by 23-year-old programer Vitalik Buterin. Several banks have already adapted Ethereum to develop and test blockchain trading applications. Alex Batlin, global blockchain lead at BNY Mellon, one of the companies on the EEA board, said over the past few ...

Undersea: Rachel Carson’s Lyrical and Revolutionary 1937 Masterpiece Inviting Humans to Explore Earth from the Perspective of Other Creatures

Source: http://ift.tt/eix1n1 - Tuesday, February 28, 2017
“Against this cosmic background the lifespan of a particular plant or animal appears, not as drama complete in itself, but only as a brief interlude in a panorama of endless change.” Pioneering biologist and writer Rachel Carson (May 27, 1907–April 14, 1964) catalyzed the modern environmental movement with the groundbreaking publication of Silent Spring in 1962, but the spark for this slow-burning revolution was kindled a quarter century earlier, while 28-year-old Carson was working for what would later become the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. When she was tasked with writing a brochure for the Fisheries Bureau, summarizing their annual research findings, Carson transmuted the science into poetry and turned in something so exquisitely lyrical that her supervisor told her they simply couldn’t publish it as their standard government report. But he encouraged her to submit it to The Atlantic Monthly as an essay. She did. It was enthusiastically accepted and published in the September 1937 issue as the trailblazing masterpiece “Undersea” under the byline R.L. Carson — a choice reflective of Carson’s era-calibrated fear that her writing wouldn’t be taken as seriously if her gender was known. Ironically, of the twenty-one contributors in that issue of the magazine, Carson’s name is the only one widely recognized today. The essay became the backbone of Carson’s first book, Under the Sea-Wind , which remained her favorite piece of writ

Chargers place franchise tag on star pass rusher Melvin Ingram

Source: saintsreport.com --- Tuesday, February 28, 2017
by Sean Wagner-McGough Teams in need of a dangerous pass rusher aren’t going to be able to lure Melvin Ingram away from San Diego. On Monday night, CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora reported that the Chargers filed paperwork to franchise tag Ingram. This move, like most franchise tag decisions, wasn’t unexpected. Last week, La Canfora estimated that there was a 75 percent chance the Chargers would tag Ingram. If he had hit the open market, he likely would’ve landed a monster contract given his productivity (18.5 sacks in the past two seasons) and his age (27). CBS Sports’ Pete Prisco ranked Ingram as this offseason’s top free agent. ... Ingram will have until July 15 to agree to a long-term deal with the Chargers. Otherwise, he’ll play under the tag, which is the equivalent of a one-year contract worth somewhere around $15 million. Even if they can’t work out a long-term deal, the Chargers ensured that their roster will boast a fierce pass rush next year in Ingram and Joey Bosa -- the reigning Defensive Rookie of the Year... Trevor Noah Just Dropped R130 Million On A Penthouse In New York [Video]

Yoh, Trevor Noah is doing just fine over there in the Big Apple. The host of The Daily Show has just bought himself a penthouse apartment in Midtown Manhattan, and there was no shortage of zeros in that final sale price. Apparently it was a cool $10 million (R130 million) price tag that he signed off on, with the deal concluded last night. This from TimesLive : …Trevor’s swanky new pad has impressive views of Midtown and Downtown Manhattan from the master bedroom and terrace. If you still aren’t impressed the reports claims that the Empire State Building is visible from a “cast iron tub in the master bath.” The three bedroom duplex penthouse is in Stella Tower located in Hell’s Kitchen. Trademark searching made easier

Source: electricalsolutions.net.au --- Tuesday, February 28, 2017
Searching for available trademarks is now easier thanks to IP Australia 's trademark database search tool. It replaces the current ATMOSS system. Each year, IP Australia receives over 60,000 trademark applications from businesses and individuals to secure their brand, but many make the mistake of applying for a trademark that is already registered. The Australian Trade Mark Search tool now makes it simpler and easier to check if a proposed trademark is available. The tool allows you to search trademarks quickly and efficiently. Features include image recognition and machine learning technology that detects objects within an image and makes instant comparisons across Australia’s entire trademark database, as well as a real-time search counter and the ability to text search across a range of goods and services. India vs Australia: Virat Kohli will come back stronger and bigger, says Mitchell Starc

Source: http://ift.tt/zsipLH --- Tuesday, February 28, 2017
Mitchell Starc triggered India’s downfall in Pune Test by claiming the wickets of Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli © IANS Mitchell Starc may have won the opening duel against Indian skipper Virat Kohli by getting the star batsman out for a duck in the first Test, but the Australian fast bowler insists the battle has just begun. Starc triggered India’s downfall in last week’s first Test in Pune by claiming the wickets of Cheteshwar Pujara and Kohli in quick succession in the first innings before left-arm spinner Steve O’Keefe took charge. Australia bowled out India for paltry totals of 105 and 107 in the two innings, with O’Keefe taking a total of 12 wickets as the visitors wrapped up a 333-run win inside three days. Kohli, who has been in red-hot form in recent months, had a rare failure with scores of 0 and 13 in his two outings. FULL CRICKET SCORECARD: India vs Australia, 1st Test at Pune Guilty of chasing Starc’s wide delivery outside the off-stump, Kohli gave away a catch to Peter Handscomb at first slip and the batting soon fell apart on a sharply turning wicket.”We know (Kohli) is going to be another key wicket for the rest of the series. There’s six more times we’ve got to get him out to really cement this series,” Starc told reporters.”We know he’ll come back bigger and stronger, but he’s one I’ll take over Pujara at the moment,” Starc said when asked to rate the importance of his twin strikes in Pune. Harbhajan Singh says he would like to see O’Keefe bowling on a non-conducive wicket for spinners, whereas Shastri wrote that Indians played the Australian spinner poorly © Getty Images & PTI Australian spinner Steve O’Keefe ‘s magical bowling had put India into a disheartening defeat of 333 runs in the first Test at Pune. But India seems to have credited the Pune pitch for the shocking loss and have refused to credit O’Keefe’s role in the Australian triumph over India. India considered as the best Test cricket team with world class spinners had to face a humiliating defeat from Australia , which ended their unbeaten streak after 19 Tests. O’Keefe’s 12-wicket haul in the first Test earned him the Man-of-the-Match title but the hosts refused to praise him for the Australian victory. Harbhajan Singh says he would like to see O’Keefe bowling on a non-conducive wicket for spinners, whereas Shastri wrote that Indians played the Australian spinner poorly. FULL CRICKET SCORECARD: India vs Australia, 1st Test at Pune Harbhajan, who had earlier predicted a complete whitewash of Australia in the Test series against India, is still not convinced by O’Keefe’s performance. He wants O’Keefe to perform well on a better track. “I will have to see [O’Keefe] bowl on a good Test match wicket. Not this one,” the 36-year-old told reporters. “Until then, I will reserve my comments.” O’Keefe along with the off-spinner, Nathan Lyon had claimed all 10 wic ...

Ricky Ponting lauds Steven Smith; compares him with Sir Don Bradman

Source: http://ift.tt/zsipLH --- Tuesday, February 28, 2017
Ricky Ponting has led Australia to victory at the 2003 and 2007 Cricket World Cups © AFP Ricky Ponting strongly believes Steven Smith — currently the world’s No. 1 batsman in Test cricket with one of the highest rating points — can be Australia ‘s greatest batsman since Don Bradman . Widely considered as Australia’s greatest batsman after Bradman, Ponting has issued a challenge to the current captain to sustain his current form for another 100 Tests. Smith has been lauded often for his batting skills in the past, and the praises have increased after his match-winning innings in the first Test against India in Pune. Smith has achieved the feat of scoring 18th hundred in just 51 Tests, increasing his ICC ranking points to 933 — the sixth- highest — among any batsman in history. FULL CRICKET SCORECARD: India vs Australia, 1st Test at Pune Smith is short of a mere 112 runs to officially rank behind Bradman as the third fastest batsman to ever pass the 5,000-run milestone, which he may achieve in the upcoming second Test against India at Bengaluru. Ponting firmly believes that Smith has the potential to become one of the greatest cricketers of Australia. “If Smithy keeps maintaining what he’s doing now for another 100 Tests then he probably will end up being a better player than me,” Ponting told News Ltd. “ He’s not doing much wrong at the moment, is he? “I know he’s got great passion and got great drive to be the best player he can ...

Microsoft’s co-founder Bill Gates participated in a new reddit Ask Me Anything (AMA) session a few hours ago, providing some comments on a wide variety of topics, including philanthropy, technology, and politics. One of the most interesting topics covered by Bill Gates was the Microsoft vs. Apple saga that concerns the graphical user interface which has the two technology giants put against each other in a matter of who copied whom to create the way their operating systems looked like in their early days. Bill Gates explained in his typical way, trying not to upset anyone, but also to shed some light in this, pointing out that the graphical interface was actually created by Xerox, so both Apple and Microsoft kind of copied it from them. “The main ‘copying’ that went on relative to Steve and me is that we ... Spring Training 2017: Ranking All 6 MLB Divisions from Best to Worst

If you like parity, this is a good time to be a Baseball fan. Aside from a few unambiguous rebuilds, mostly in the National League, every team has at least a puncher's chance of playing into October. We're in the initial days of spring training, but it's not too early to run through the six divisions and see how they stack up. Throughout these rankings, I'll be referencing FanGraphs ' projected 2017 standings. To be clear, I'm using them as a starting point, not a final arbiter. Depth matters, meaning divisions with contenders top to bottom get bonus points. But a couple of high-level franchises with legitimate World Series aspirations can buoy a bottom feeder or two. We'll start with the top division and work our way down from there. Begin Slideshow ...

Source: www.sbnation.com --- Monday, February 27, 2017
Can ‘Dunk City’ punch another ticket to the Big Dance? We’re about to find out during the Atlantic Sun tournament. The Florida Gulf Coast men’s Basketball team (23-7, 12-2) captured a regular season Atlantic Sun conference title after defeating Stetson at the Alico Arena on Thursday. The Eagles got off to a 1-3 start but quickly turned their season around by winning 22 of their last 26 games. They now find themselves as the No. 1 seed heading into the Atlantic Sun tournament, with a berth to March Madness on the line. Junior guard Brandon Goodwin shouldered most of the scoring duties for Florida Gulf Coast this season. The 6’2 guard averaged 18 points per contest. Zach Johnson , Demetris Morant , and Christian Terrell each averaged over 10 points as well. FGCU may be the top dog in the conference, but it will face plenty of competition as tournament play approaches. The Lipscomb Bisons posted an 11-3 record against Atlantic Sun teams. Their overall record this season is 19-12. The North Florida Ospreys have a 13-18 record but went 8-6 in the conference. Can Florida Gulf Coast punch another ticket to the Big Dance? Windows 10 Cloud May Paywall Win32 Apps

Source: www.eteknix.com --- Tuesday, February 28, 2017
Over the past several weeks, more and more information is building about Microsoft’s upcoming Creators Update to Windows 10. One of the new additions to the lineup are closely linked, the new Windows 10 Cloud and the Windows 10 Win32 App toggle. As we know from previous reports, Windows 10 Cloud features limitations on Win32 running, acting as sort of Windows RT successor. According to new information coming out, this limitation may merely be a software toggle and not an architectural difference. In fact, it might be possible to pay to enable Windows 10 Cloud to run Win32 apps. Earlier reports suggested that Windows 10 Cloud would not work with Win32 apps perhaps due to running on ARM or as a way to offer a tablet-like computing experience. However, later leaks showed that the Cloud version, while locked down, was not incapable of running Win32 apps. This means it is merely the next level of the leaked Settings app that prohibits Win32 apps from installing. The Cloud version merely has this feature baked in and cannot be changed by the user. In what may be a controversial twist, Microsoft may actually allow Windows 10 Cloud to be upgraded to full Windows 10 and bypass the Win32 restriction. That is of course if the user pays for the upgrade. This suggests that Windows 10 Cloud isn’t really meant to secure the user or offer a tablet like experience. Instead, it is a way for Microsoft and OEMs to push a cheaper, gimped versions of ...

Greta Van Susteren: Democrats Must Applaud Trump During Parts Of His Speech Or They Will Look Like They Don't Want America To Be Great Again

Source: www.mediamatters.org --- Tuesday, February 28, 2017
GRETA VAN SUSTEREN (HOST): For the record years ago I sat next to Baseball great Frank Robinson at an Orioles game and he showed me much; that Baseball is so much more than watching the ball and the swings. So, on the diamond there are things that are done to spook the opponent, like who is warming up, the conversation people between catcher and the pitcher, and so much more. So occurred to me, President Trump’s address to Congress tomorrow night is a bit like that, while you may think the sole action is just the President speaking, there’ll be so much more going on in that political chamber that’s intended to spook political opponents so don’t be surprised if during President Trump’s speech he deliberately says certain things like “make America great again” because he knows all the Republicans will stand and applaud and what do the Democrats do? If they just sit there they look like they don’t want America to be great. That’ll be awful for them. That’s right. And so that plays right into Trump’s game plan for the night. Or how about if Trump says this; “bring the jobs back to America,” if the Democrats sit through that one, while the Republicans stand and clap, the Democrats will look like they don’t want jobs for fellow Americans. Oh brother right, the games go on, don’t they? Oh yes, a bit like that Baseball diamond, so much going on and so many traps set. Baseball squares off with UC Davis

Source: http://ift.tt/OCJ7XD --- Tuesday, February 28, 2017
Coming off of its weekend sweep of Kansas at home, Stanford Baseball (5-2) will return to Sunken Diamond once more for a single game against the UC Davis Aggies (3-2) on Tuesday. The Cardinal have been red-hot since their initial series with Cal State Fullerton. After dropping the first two games of the season, the team has won five straight games, its longest such streak since May of 2014. This series also pushed the team to 11 straight home wins, its longest streak since the 2011 and 2012 seasons. The players will look to push this momentum going into their Tuesday game. Part of the Cardinal’s recent success has to be attributed to their bats. The team has three players batting .390 or higher with at least 20 at-bats over the course of the season. Junior infielder Mikey Diekroeger (.417), sophomore infielder Duke Kinamon (.435) and senior catcher Alex Dunlap (.393) have shown batting consistency that allows the Cardinal to establish a fearsome offensive power. All three of those players also have slugging percentages over .400 and force opposing pitchers to show respect to the Stanford bats. As a whole, the team is batting .274, an impressive stat over the course of seven games. But the team’s pitching is equally responsible for the recent success at Sunken Diamond. Through their seven game season, the Cardinal pitchers have a combined ERA of 2.14, limiting opponents to low scores throughout all of their wins. Starting pitchers ...

5 MLB teams that could surprise in 2017

Source: larrybrownsports.com --- Monday, February 27, 2017
Every year in Baseball, there are a few teams that perform better than many observers would have expected them to. That doesn’t necessarily mean they go from worst to first or jump into the postseason. Some cellar-dwellers take a huge leap forward to respectability and put themselves in contention for playoff spots in years to come, while others see it all come together and surge into the postseason. Here are five teams with varying levels of expectations who may end up impressing in 2017. 5) Atlanta Braves Sometimes a decent indicator of how a team is progressing is to look at how they finished the previous season. On the surface, the Braves were an unremarkable 68-93 team that finished last in the NL East. Dig a little deeper, though, and you’ll see that their record from Aug. 1 until the end of the season was a much-improved 31-25. Savvy moves from their front office have given them a good base of young talent to work with, with former No. 1 pick Dansby Swanson leading the charge. Swanson joins a core of talented players either entering or already in their prime, with Ender Inciarte, Freddie Freeman, and Julio Teheran forming a strong core. The approach Atlanta has taken for 2017 is augmenting that talent with veteran players while they wait for other young guys to realize their potential. They’ve brought in two forty-something pitchers in R.A. Dickey and the iconic Bartolo Colon, and while neither will give them ace-level pro ...

Romania's Unrevolutionary Revolution

Source: www.zerohedge.com - Tuesday, February 28, 2017
Via Carmen Elena Dorobat of The Mises Institute, February in Romania has brought 27 consecutive days of protests against the current government, at a scale unmatched since the Revolution in 1989. In a record day, more than 600,000 people gathered in the capital’s Victory Square and around the country to overturn a decision by the current ruling party to decriminalize some acts of corruption and abuse of office. This decision was especially self-serving given the high number of party members already serving suspended sentences for similar graft offenses. News outlets around the world have covered the events using flattering words, describing the peaceful riots as a “ poetry of international resistance ” and a “massive political awakening .” The resilience—and moderate success—of protesters, in spite of the government digging its heels in and the temperatures dropping, has been undeniably impressive, and has demonstrated an energetic interest in pursuing justice, which, rightly employed, could become the driver of a much needed change in Romanian politics. Yet at the same time, amongst the shouting against totalitarian measures aimed at changing the penal and civil code, other voices emerged as well. Equally numerous, and sometimes belonging to the same people, they call for stronger ‘democratic’ processes and offer public displays of affection for the European Union. Unsurprisingly, there have also been no mass protests against an

Browns cut veteran receiver Andrew Hawkins, who took stand on social issues and inspired teammates during time in Cleveland

No Browns player proved to be a more fearless leader during the past three years than wide receiver Andrew Hawkins. Yet the business of the NFL, where production and financial considerations supersede everything, led the Browns to terminate the contract of Hawkins and announce his release Monday. In a video published on Uninterrupted.com, Hawkins explained he met last week with the Browns, who went 1-15 this past season, and the two sides agreed it would be best to part ways. He had one season left on his contract and was scheduled to make $1.8 million in 2017. “I want to thank the Cleveland Browns for not only understanding my situation and where I’m at in my career, but more importantly giving me the opportunity to wear the storied orange and brown over the last three seasons,” Hawkins said. “We didn’t have the success that we hoped for, but at the same time, I’m confident that we laid the groundwork for a bright future. “So to Cleveland Browns fans, thank you from the bottom of my heart for rooting for me, supporting me and my family over the last three seasons. Be optimistic because Hue Jackson is one of the best coaches in all of football, and he’s changing the culture there on a daily basis.” Hawkins tried to spearhead a cultural shift beyond football by taking a stand on social issues. '); //--> Mistakes here and there have cost the club, then, with Ronald Koeman, to his credit, acting swiftly when change has been needed. Looking at it, then, there are some weak-links in the squad that need to be addressed, and our landlord reckons this pair stand out most of all… ...
