Morningside crushed Briar Cliff by scores of 14-2 and 19-2 when it swept its city rival in a Monday GPAC Baseball doubleheader at Briar Cliff. The Mustangs pounded out 40 hits in the two contests. Morningside extended its winning streak to four games and improved its record to 11-14-1 overall and 5-3 in the GPAC. Senior pitcher Cody Selig mowed down the Chargers with a complete game seven-hitter and was backed by an impressive 17-hit Morningside offensive attack when the Mustangs won the first game in a rout. Selig struck out six and did not walk a batter while improving his record to 2-3 this season and 20-8 for his career. The Mustangs never trailed in the opener after they jumped on Charger starting pitcher Andrew Stover for three runs in the top of the first inning. Dylan Mersola got the action started when he led off the game with a single, advanced to third on an error and scored on a passed ball. The Mustangs had runners at first and second with one out after Jordan Pierce worked Stover for a walk and Stover hit Joe Genoways with a pitch to set up RBI singles by Sam Huska and Andrew Kasperbauer. The Mustangs stretched their lead to 5-0 in the top of the third inning when Genoways singled and scored on a double by Huska, who later came home on a sacrifice fly by Levi Davidson.
