The Orioles can still win their season-opening series with a win over the Twins on Sunday afternoon. The offense might try actually hitting in order to help this cause. One of those Baseball cliches goes like this: “You’re never as good as you look when you’re winning and you’re never as bad as you look when you’re losing.” The Orioles have to hope for that second part of the sentence in particular, because they looked awful on a cold Saturday night as they lost their first game of the season. There’s just something about sitting in the stands in cool weather in March, watching your favorite Baseball team nearly get no-hit by a collection of jokers led by Kyle Gibson, that really wipes out any Opening Day optimism. And it’s not like the Orioles offense was very good even on Opening Day when they won, anyway. They are better than this, of course. The whole thing just feels more apocalyptic because only two games have been played. If it was June right now and the Orioles just went through a bad stretch on offense for two games, one of which they managed to win, that would be irritating but not worrisome. It’s just that when there’s nothing else to talk about, what little has happened feels so much more important. In the case of someone like Chris Davis, it’s worrisome because his finding the success that has eluded him since signing his giant contract was supposed to be one of the team’s keys to winning.
