USC’s Hayden Hurst goes to the Ravens in first round of NFL Draft

USC Athletics Department graphic.  The dream of playing Major League Baseball did not work out for Hayden Hurst. It appears he will have better luck with the National Football League. The South Carolina tight end, who entered the school as a walk-on, was selected by the Baltimore Ravens with the 25th overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. “A dream come true,” Hurst said via his twitter account. “Thank you to the Ravens for believing in me! Now it’s time to get to work.” Hurst finished a three-year career with 100 receptions for 1,281 yards and three touchdowns. He was second on the team in catches as a junior with 44 for 559 yards and two scores. He also picked up a rushing touchdown. He was named First Team All-SEC following his junior season. The 6-4 ½, 250-pound athlete opted to watch the draft with his family at their home in Jacksonville, Fla. rather than attend in Dallas. He said during USC’s NFL Pro Day it had to do with his experience with the 2012 MLB Draft. He was selected in the 17th round by the Pittsburgh Pirates. When the draft began, he thought he would be selected in the first two rounds. “I didn’t have the best experience my first time around so I just want to be at home with my mom and dad,” he said. “I was supposed go in the top two rounds.
