Challenges For HR Directors In 2016

What challenges does 2016 present for HR directors of FTSE100 firms? In 2015, one of the notable features of the business world has been the impact that a corporate scandal can have on the reputation of a company or sector. As Benjamin Franklin, one of the founding fathers of the US remarked: ‘It takes many good deeds to build a reputation and only one bad one to lose it’. In 2015, the repercussions of the carbon emissions cheating debacle by Volkswagen continues to be felt by its customers, suppliers and employees and a catalogue of misdemeanors such as the foreign exchange rate rigging and money laundering has plagued the banking sector.

Government pushes back target year for full employment from 2018 to 2020

Source: www.newstalk.com - Wednesday, December 30, 2015
The Government has formally abandoned its target to have full employment in Ireland by 2018. It has now pushed the target back to the year 2020 - after admitting it is too difficult to get jobs for everyone within three years. 2020 was the original target, but the plan was brought forward after a Cabinet meeting at the start of the year. Unemployment now stands at 8.9%, compared to over 15% at the start of 2012. Enda Kenny has admitted getting to 6% - which he considers full employment - is harder than expected. He says the revised target "is more realistic... It's important we set up that stall. "The difficulties and challenges we faced this year were a continuation of the great difficulties for the last number of years. But now it's moving on very strongly," he added. The Taoiseach also explained that it is harder to get from 10% to 6%, than it is to get from 15% to 10%.

Former Governor George Pataki Ends His Presidential Campaign

Source: www.inquisitr.com - Wednesday, December 30, 2015
On Tuesday, George Pataki announced that he would be ending his presidential campaign. Pataki, who was aiming to gain the Republican nomination, was a former governor of New York. As CNN reports , George served for three terms, and he was in office during the 9/11 attacks. Pataki had hoped that his experience being in office during the terrorist attacks would gain him votes. However, he never even qualified for prime-time debates. In a video posted onto his social media accounts, George announced that he would be ending his campaign, and he expressed his hope that the U.S. would elect a suitable candidate to take office in the White House. “While tonight is the end of my journey for the White House as I suspend my campaign for president, I am confident we can elect the right person. Someone who will bring us together and who understands that politicians, including the president, must be the people’s servant and not their master. I know the best of America is still ahead of us.” Republican presidential candidate George Pataki has dropped out of the race for the Republican nomination (AP Photo/Susan Walsh) Earlier this year, the Inquisitr reported that when Pataki announced that he would be running for president, he was called a “long shot” right off the bat. However, George did turn some heads when he suggested sending troops in to fight ISIS. Pataki made it clear though that he didn’t want to make it a long-term mission. “I don’t

Chip Kelly fired after Eagles moves lead to missed playoffs

PHILADELPHIA — Chip Kelly went three-and-out — much like his inconsistent offense. Kelly was fired by the Philadelphia Eagles on Tuesday night with one game left in his third season, completing a dramatic drop for a coach who was heavily recruited and lauded as an offensive genius only a couple years ago. Kelly was dumped after missing the playoffs for the second straight season and failing miserably in his first year in charge of personnel.

Iowa Man Held Without Bail In Murder Tied To Dice Game Dispute

Source: chicago.cbslocal.com - Wednesday, December 30, 2015
CHICAGO (STMW) — An Iowa man was ordered held without bail Tuesday for allegedly killing a man who tried to stop a fight that stemmed from an argument over a dice game on the South Side. Emmanuel Harvey, who was working at an Oral-B toothbrush factory, was recently arrested out of state in the May 14 murder of 29-year-old Alvin Randolph. Another man, Garland Benson, 26, also was ordered held without bail in July for the deadly shooting in the 6400 block of South Damen. The day before Randolph was killed, Benson accused another person of cheating during a dice game, prompting Harvey to hit another player with a shovel several times, Assistant Cook County State’s Attorney Jamie Santini said. That person suffered a broken wrist. The dispute ended for the day. But Benson and Harvey weren’t done, Santini said. The pair and several others went to the home of the person Benson accused of cheating the next night, Santini said. Benson and Harvey also had some of their friends following in a van, Santini said. Several people were on the porch, including the grandmother and mother of Benson and Harvey’s rival, Santini said. The rival was friends with Randolph who tried to stop the confrontation by allegedly approaching the men with a golf club. That’s when Benson and Harvey opened fire, Santini said. Soon, two others who were with Benson and Harvey joined their friends and started shooting toward the group of people at the home, Santini sai

California Gun Confiscation Goes Into Effect On January 1

Source: www.inquisitr.com - Wednesday, December 30, 2015
On September 30, 2014, Governor Jerry Brown signed a law that will allow a person’s guns to be confiscated if a judge can be convinced that a person with a gun is a danger to himself or others. This law, AB 1014, goes into effect on January 1, 2016. If a judge decides that a person owning a gun “poses an immediate and present danger of causing personal injury to himself, herself or another by having in his or her custody or control,” a gun violence restraining order will go into effect. The GVRO will be in place for 21 days. The 21-day gun confiscation willallow a person to cool off and be evaluated by a psychologist for mental health disorder. Los Angeles Police Department Assistant Chief Michael Moore commented on the new law. “The law gives us a vehicle to cause the person to surrender their weapons, to have a time out, if you will. It allows further examination of the person’s mental state. It’s a short duration and it allows for due process. It’s an opportunity for mental health professionals to provide an analysis of a person’s mental state.” The 2014 law was drafted and signed due to a response to the shootout done by Elliot Rodger. During Rodger’s shooting spree, Rodger shot and killed six people and injured 14 others. Instead of going to prison, Roger killed himself. Wendy Patrick, a San Diego State University professor, and lawyer spoke with a CBS affiliate. “It’s the family members, it’s the people closest to the perpe

The chairman of Google says British startups should embrace Facebook, Instagram and Twitter (GOOG)

Source: uk.businessinsider.com - Wednesday, December 30, 2015
Eric Schmidt, the executive chairman of Alphabet (formerly Google), today advised British startups to market their products on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter if they want to grow their businesses. "If you’ve got a great product, get it out there and the rest is obvious," Schmidt told UK entrepreneur Rohan Silva during an  interview on BBC Radio 4 today . Silva, who knows Schmidt from his days as a policy advisor to David Cameron, asked Schmidt what startups can do to market a product on a limited budget. "Go out on Twitter, use Facebook. Instagram now is having a huge renaissance in terms of marketing and promotions." Perhaps unsurprisingly, Schmidt also encouraged startups to use Google's advertising system to market their products. "The big marketing and sales budgets that traditional companies have are being replaced by these much more lean and efficient distribution models that companies have pioneered on the web," said the former Google CEO. "This is obviously not an ad for Google AdWords but that’s our business. "The only thing that matters now in a company, a small company, is the product quality. Does it work, does it really solve a problem? Everything else whether it’s distribution, or marketing or selling can now be done over the web or funded through crowdfunding and so forth and so on." Of corruption, despotism and power-struggles: into the murky world of football in Pakistan [Catch News]

Source: http://ift.tt/Vy84Kp --- Wednesday, December 30, 2015
by Bhargab Sarmah (Catch News, 30 December 2015) “Pakistan has promising bunch of players. But people here prefer personalities before sport. Lack of merit, favouritism, politics for power in the Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) is not helping the cause of the game in this country,” former Pakistan national team coach John Layton had lamented after leaving his post in 2002. 13 years later, little has changed in Pakistan Football it seems. As seven of the eight South Asian Football Federation (SAFF)-affiliated countries battle it out for the SAFF Suzuki Cup title in Trivandrum, India, the Pakistan national team can only enjoy the action on television. In fact, with the Pak Shaheens already out of the World Cup qualifiers after losing the first round tie to Yemen, it remains unclear as to when the national team will be in competitive action next. PFF power-struggle and the aftermath It was a controversial provincial body election which kicked off a series of events leading to this current crisis. In April 2015, Sardar Naveed Haider Khan, a close aide of PFF President Faisal Saleh Hayat, emerged as the winner in the presidential elections of the Punjab Football Association (PFA). The election was mired in controversy after Khan’s rival Arshad Lodhi saw several of his supporters banned by a PFF disciplinary committee. Find out if Microsoft stores encryption recovery keys in the cloud

Source: www.ghacks.net --- Wednesday, December 30, 2015
A recent The Intercept article reveals that Microsoft is storing device encryption keys in the cloud under certain circumstances automatically. Device Encryption is a built-in encryption feature that became first available with Microsoft's Windows 8 operating system. The core difference between Device Encryption and Bitlocker is that Bitlocker is configurable while Device Encryption is not. Furthermore, full Bitlocker functionality is only available in Pro and Enterprise editions of Windows while Device Encryption is available in all. Device encryption is enabled automatically if the computer has the required encryption chip and if a Microsoft account is used to sign-in to the computer. If that is the case, the encryption key is stored in the cloud automatically. If the computer is not connected to a Windows domain, it is sent to Microsoft, and if it is, will be stored on company servers instead. Windows users who choose not to create Windows accounts during setup or afterwards, won't have device encryption enabled. There is no way to prevent Windows from sending the encryption key to the cloud if the computer matches the requirements. Why keys are backed up in the cloud You are probably wondering why Microsoft backs up keys in the cloud automatically. The answer to that is convenience, as users can make use of the key backed up in the cloud to regain access to files on the system. This can be the only way if no local backup of t ...

Apple faces lawsuit over how iOS 9 negatively impacts iPhone 4s performance

Source: www.imore.com --- Wednesday, December 30, 2015
It's time to put away that mince pie and those bottles of mulled wine as we wait for 2016 to greet us all, but not everyone will be welcoming the new year with a working iPhone. That's according to a new complaint over how iOS 9 is reported to significantly impact the performance of the iPhone 4s . Unfortunately for those affected, they're unable to downgrade from iOS 9 due to Apple security. More than 100 iPhone 4s owners have asserted that the update has led to a negative experience on their smartphone to the point where it's simply unusable for daily use. Delayed launch times for apps, slower response on the touchscreen, as well as sluggish performance overall plague said owners. Then you have the reported freezing and crashes. Not fun times for anyone. It's claimed that Apple knows all too well about iOS 9 and how the update makes the iPhone 4s simply not fit for use by owners and forcing them to either endure aforementioned issues or fork out on an upgrade. Plaintiffs are now seeking more than $5 million in damages, with an option to treble. This isn't the first time Apple has been in trouble for planned obsolescence, with complaints in 2011 over poor performance, as well as 2013 for lack of storage after updating . In Job Interviews, Use These 4 Sentences To Transition From Recruiting To Interviewing

When a candidate enters the room to interview, it signals a shift from recruiting: attracting them to the organization, to interviewing: conducting a diagnosis of skills and attitudes to see if they’re a fit for the organization. But one of the biggest mistakes hiring managers make is missing that signal and continuing to recruit when they should be interviewing.

Delivering Social Customer Service At MailChimp

Most of the companies that are doing social customer service well are on the journey. This means they have focused on a few solid channels and work to create a strong process to enable customers to interact with them on that channel. MailChimp is one of those companies. The company serves many of the world's small businesses as the preferred email marketing solution. It was founded in 2001 and by June 2014 10 billion emails per month were sent through MailChimp. Most of these MailChimp customers are small businesses but some are larger too such as Uber--a company known to use the service. They've launched and operationalized a strong social listening and response customer service program to serve their many customers. In this podcast I talk to practitioner Kevan Gammage, MailChimp's Social Support Manager who gave our listeners on The Modern Customer podcast a unique view into the daily ongoings of social customer support at MailChimp.

Apple Slices Topped with Cranberry Walnut Tuna Salad

Disclosure: This shop has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser. All opinions are mine alone. #BetterWithCraisins #CollectiveBias I don't know why but I struggle with preparing my own lunches on the weekends and days off.  I like to step away from my go-to frozen meals that I take every day to work and enjoy something fresh but the challenge is finding that perfect lunchtime recipe that doesn't take a ton of time to prepare.   I started thinking about what I enjoyed as a kid on those lunchtimes with my mom and immediately tuna salad sandwiches popped into my head.  But I wanted to add a little twist to that traditional sandwich recipe and came up with something that is now my favorite lunchtime meal to enjoy at home.  Apple Slices Topped with Cranberry Walnut Tuna Salad  Free printable recipe here. Ingredients: 1/2 cup mayonnaise 1/4 cup crushed walnuts  1/4 tsp salt 1/4 tsp pepper 1/2 tsp garlic powder 1/4 cup chopped onion 1 can (5 ounces) tuna, drained 1/2 cup Craisins® Dried Cranberries 1 Apple, sliced - I use Gala apples Romaine lettuce  Directions: 1.  Combine walnuts, salt, pepper, garlic powder, onions, tuna, and Craisin s®  in a medium bowl.   2.  Add mayonnaise and carefully mix together into a nice tuna salad mixture.  3.  Slice Apple into "circles".  I can get about 5 sliders out of each Apple.  4.  Top apples with a good amount of the Cranberry Walnut Tuna Salad.  5.  Place Apple slices topped w ...

4 off-radar road trips for 2014 Road trips are as American as Apple pie. But why hit the usual places when you can take the road less traveled? There are hundreds of small, often overlooked towns in the U.S. that offer unique experiences that aren’t canned or overly commercialized. We’ve traveled a lot, and these locations stick out as places where the people are friendly, the food is authentic and the attractions are as grassroots as they come. Check out our picks for the hot new places to travel in 2014: 1. Santa Ynez Valley and Los Alamos, Calif. What’s next for California tourism? The Central Coast. Traditionally viewed as California’s flyover country – what you drive through to get from Los Angeles to San Francisco – the Central Coast, particularly Santa Barbara and its wine country, is becoming a hotbed of farm-to-table restaurants, family-owned boutique wineries, artisan food producers and bountiful farm stands. It’s a much more relaxed, accessible – and, dare we say, friendlier? – version of Napa. The stunning Santa Ynez Valley is surrounded by mountain ranges with the mighty Santa Ynez River running through them, and small towns like Los Olivos and Solvang – California’s Little Denmark – are worth a stop to explore the markets and wine tasting rooms. Just north of Santa Ynez Valley, the little town of Los Alamos, population 1,890, is attracting a lot of attention for its excellent restaurants, wine tasting rooms, art gal ...

Hear This: Bruce Springsteen can overcome even the moodiest teenager’s hate

In Hear This , The A.V. Club writers sing the praises of songs they know well. This week: Songs our families made us listen to repeatedly. Bruce Springsteen, Badlands (1978) My mom has solid taste in music, something I didn’t appreciate but benefited from greatly growing up. She started taking my twin and me to concerts when we were in middle school, highlights including Elvis Costello, Tom Petty, and Bob Dylan—all artists I like and respect now, but didn’t necessarily stack up as better than Good Charlotte when I was 13. But the crowning voice of my childhood was Bruce Springsteen, whether I liked it or not—his were the songs my mother played repeatedly, and his concerts were the ones she (awesomely and daringly) pulled us out of school for days at a time to see. Source: www.theguardian.com - Sunday, December 27, 2015
Jury is out at Newcastle and Southampton, it’s been a bit of a slog at Norwich and West Brom, Sam may be the right man for Sunderland, Tottenham have added steel to style, and there is cheer at Watford, West Ham and Stoke Read part one: Arsenal to Manchester United The malaise of the John Carver era has sadly carried over into this season: we seem to have a team that contains some genuine talent but lacks both experience and guts – the blame for which has to reside with Mike Ashley’s transfer policy. There have been exciting moments ( Chelsea and Liverpool at home, Spurs away) but too many chickens have come home to roost: a lack of leadership on the pitch was evident last year but not addressed, ditto our lack of creativity and scoring ability. Defensively we’ve been fragile again too – something that has been a long-term problem, yet is ignored year after year. Continue reading...

At least 8 killed as tornadoes sweep through Texas

Source: www.thestar.com - Sunday, December 27, 2015
DALLAS—Tornadoes swept through the Dallas area leaving substantial damage and at least eight people dead either from the storm or related traffic accidents. It’s the latest of a succession of freakish winter weather events across the country that on Sunday also could include heavy snow and massive flooding. The Texas tornadoes that touched down after dark on Saturday followed days of tumultuous weather in the Southeast including unusual winter tornadoes that left 18 people dead over the Christmas holiday period. National Weather Service Meteorologist Anthony Bain in Fort Worth said several tornadoes touched down in the Dallas area, although the full extent of damage would not be known until daylight Sunday. The storm blew the roofs off homes and left vehicles mangled or turned upside down, churches damaged, power lines down, natural gas lines burst, trees toppled and debris strewn across neighbourhoods. The damage stretched over about a 65 kilometre-long area from about 30 kilometres south of Dallas to northeast of the city. Joe Harn, police spokesman for Garland, about 30 kilometres northeast of Dallas, said five people were killed in vehicle accidents during the massive storm, but it’s unclear if all five were in the same vehicle or how they died. Three other people died in Collin County, about 70 kilometres northeast of Dallas, according to sheriff’s deputy Chris Havey, although the circumstances were not immediately clear. In

Oklahoma's Darlington hopes to leave legacy off the field

Source: www.mysanantonio.com --- Sunday, December 27, 2015
(AP) — Ty Darlington was well aware of the issues facing college Football — concussions, pay-for-play, racial issues, transfer rules to name a few— but felt powerless to do anything. The 6-foot-3, 286-pound center for Oklahoma overcame nerves and attended a Big 12 Student-Athlete Advisory Committee conference as a favor to the school's director of student athlete development, and now he's known as "The Senator." At a conference in Washington D.C. in January, he made a positive and powerful impression on college leaders when he spoke as a student member of the NCAA's autonomy legislation committee. Recently, Darlington talked about quarterback Baker Mayfield, a second team All-American who got caught up in transfer rules. After his Football days are over, Darlington wants to coach or become an athletic administrator. Darlington is taking graduate courses in adult and higher education. On the field, his leadership has helped an offensive line blossom. An example of what you want in a student-athlete, the absolute example. Oklahoma created a seven-member leadership council after last year's loss to Clemson in the Russell Athletic Bowl. Darlington said he liked the fact that Football players at Missouri took a stand against racism together, but the impact — the eventual ouster of the school's chancellor and president — made him think. Going forward, he'd like to see fewer restrictions on the way the athletes can use their name, image ...

How We Need To Teach The New Age Of Marketers

With 2016 just days away, the New Year will necessitate a new age of marketers. Marketing has, and must always; reflect the current belief system and feedback from consumers. Thus, a new wave of marketing is not occurring as a byproduct of its own intrinsic course of action but rather in response to a change in the demands, expectations, and desires of consumers. As consumers grow and adapt to the market marketers must adapt along with them. There are many ways in which consumers are changing and thus changing the spectrum of marketing philosophies and techniques. Consumers are becoming more educated, with an abundance of information available at their fingertips. As a result of the increase in data, consumers are also becoming more skeptical. More awareness of product value provides consumers insight with the effect of marketing their views. Consumers have a heightened awareness of marketing, and thus marketers are forced to configure new strategies to reach their viewers conspicuously. Adapting to the new perspective of consumers, it is clear that the new age of marketers are more data scientists than traditional marketers. However, it wasn’t always this way. Here are three things to bear in mind when adapting to the new marketing trends in 2016.

Why Tech Companies Must Market Their Security Protection In 2016

In 2016, IT security will be more important than ever before. In the past couple of years, hundreds of millions of private records have been lost, and millions of dollars of damages have been suffered by businesses worldwide. From mobile hacks to endpoint hacks to network hacks – data breaches have taken their toll. Because of recent widely known breaches in security, customers are more weary when approaching a company and providing data. For a company to gain the trust of their customers, they now must market their security protection to their clients. Data loss protection and other forms of security are no longer seen as guaranteed measures by customers. For a company to effectively put itself in a position of trust and reliability with its customers, it must establish (and market) certain regulatory security protocols. PCloud, a file security company that enables personal and business storage for the digital world, remarked on the amount of security breaches in 2015, saying “the data loss and security breaches were devastating, costing some companies millions of dollars in damages and fees.”
