Meet The Badass Women Behind The Indianapolis 500

When President Barack Obama congratulated the United States women's national soccer team on its 2015 World Cup victory, he said that the team taught America’s children that “playing like a girl means you are a badass.” I immediately thought, “Did the President just say ‘badass’ in the White House?!?” Oh yeah, he did. Since then, I have adopted badass to describe tough, uncompromising women in sports. Thank you, Mr. President. Now, please allow me to take a page out of your playbook and tell Americans about another group of badass women – those who are behind the 100th Running of the Indianapolis 500. It is the pinnacle race in sports history, a race where women were largely excluded. Although, barrier-breakers such as Janet Guthrie and Lyn St. James climbed in the driver’s seat and paved the way for the next generation of women in motorsports.
