INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Alexander Rossi pulled off an improbable win in the 100th Indianapolis 500. It was so unlikely, the 24-year old rookie said after the race he has no idea how his team did it. Rossi did it was a fuel conservation strategy that saw him run the final 36 laps without a pit stop. The Californian and his Andretti Huerta Autosport team cut it so close, he ran out of fuel on his victory lap. Race leader Carlos Munoz was forced to pit with four laps to go for fuel opening the door forRossi. Munoz finished second, followed by Josef Newgarden, Tony Kanaan and Charlie Kimball. Helio Castroneves was the last rookie to win the race in 2001. Copyright 2016 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed.
