GamesCom just revealed its nominee list for its 2018 awards, and one nomination stood out in particular, since it hasn’t even been announced yet. A game called Project Mephisto was listed in the category for “Best Console Game – Sony PlayStation 4.” While the other nominees— Marvel’s Spider-Man and Assassin’s Creed Odyssey —both had their respective publishers listed next to them, Project Mephisto , which is working title, didn’t have any such information attached to it. So, what is it? Our first guess is that it’s related in some way to one of the “multiple” Diablo projects that Blizzard recently teased . Mephisto is one of the Prime Evils who’s defeated in Diablo II . Blizzard did state that more information about one of its Diablo projects would arrive “later this year,” and an announcement at GamesCom would technically count as “later this year.” However, we have another theory. Bare with us, because this is about to go down a weird rabbit hole that probably will amount to nothing, since it’s most likely the Diablo thing. We discovered a September 2013 post on TIGSource Forums describing a game from indie developer Nuke Nine called “Project Mephisto.” That project eventually became (we think) Vagante , which went through four years of early access development before finally launching version 1.0 in February 2018.
