Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince is the long-awaited sequel to the Trine trilogy and returns to the roots of the franchise. We played it on Nintendo Switch during GamesCom 2019 and it’s shaping up to become one of the best puzzle adventure games out there. Want to know why? Let’s jump in! Classic Trine gameplay For those who played Trine, this one is as close as the original idea it gets. Once more, you’re venturing through a 2.5D side-scrolling world where you have to solve tons of puzzles and fight several bosses. Before I could test the Nintendo Switch version, the team demonstrated the co-op gameplay first, showcasing the true strength of Trine. Trine is all about puzzle-solving and boss battles, as demonstrated in the co-op. We had access to the wizard and the knight during this presentation and the way these two worked together was simply put amazing. The level was filled with water that needed to flow differently in order to solve some of the puzzles. The knight could leave a duplicate shield behind, forcing the water to bend, while the wizard could place boxes to affect the stream of water even more. Clearly communicating and working together as one in order to solve the puzzles was key here in the co-op, remembering us of the original Trine game a lot.
