Why Angry Baby Boomers Gave Us Trump And Now, Brexit

As the fallout from the Brexit vote continues, and politicians hem and haw and slice each other up, and Donald Trump continues fumbling toward the Republican nomination, I want to note a certain broad impulse in conservative politics in Britain and America. It has many names: nullification, blowing up the system, sending a message. It is the idea that voting – or really, politics or political action itself – is no longer a practical or instrumental choice, a way to see certain policies enacted or even to move society in a particular direction. Instead, it’s both more abstract, but also more overweening. The message: screw it all.
