( Rewatch HAN Network’s live coverage of Turkey Bowl XXIII! ) Greenwich (7-3) needed a win and a fair amount of help to secure the eighth and final spot in Connecticut’s big school Football division. The Fix For Slumping NFL Ratings Might Be Less NFL

Source: www.newsy.com --- Sunday, November 27, 2016
Watch Video NFL ratings are down this year, and the league thinks the solution could be less NFL. NFL games are taking longer and longer — this year games take about five extra minutes to finish compared to last season. And there are  only about 11 minutes of  actual game action. SEE MORE: NFL Ratings Are Down, And No One's Sure Why NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell  says the league is trying to cut down on "dead time"  in between plays as much as possible and has brought up what might be a pretty radical plan to achieve that. "Should we look at ways to maybe take some commercialization out of the game, either in less ads or maybe have the ads come in different ways," the commissioner said in  an interview with The New York Times .   Cutting commercials would certainly help games move along more quickly; ads take up about a third of game broadcasts. But that would mean fewer advertising dollars, which wouldn't sit well with TV networks that show games. SEE MORE: Monday Night Football Heads To Mexico For Historic Game There are other options on the table, too, including streamlining replay reviews. The league  has made a few changes  in recent years to try to speed up the system — because no one likes sitting around and waiting to see how a play is called. In any case, Goodell says he's not too worried about how ratings are behaving, and he's quick to point out how great the past decade has been for the NFL on TV. But cutting down on ...

The Ravens Committed A Bunch Of Holding Penalties To Run Out The Clock Against Cincinnati

Source: uproxx.com --- Sunday, November 27, 2016
This is the most absurd play of the 2016 NFL season. The Baltimore Ravens were up by seven on the Cincinnati Bengals with 11 seconds left in their game on Sunday. It was 4th-and-8, and all that Baltimore needed to do was boot the ball and hope the Bengals couldn’t go essentially the length of the field in only four or five seconds. At least that’s what conventional wisdom says the team should have done. However, John Harbaugh had another idea: since a game can end on an offensive penalty, why not just commit a whole bunch of penalties so that the play takes 11 seconds? Instead of risking the punt getting blocked, a huge return, or a big touchdown by the Bengals, he decided to do that. The ball got snapped to Sam Koch, who just stood there for a while as the clock ticked down. The reason no one got to him was that basically everyone on the Ravens’ punt team just mauled everyone in a Bengals uniform. It was the most egregious penalty that we’ve ever seen, but unlike most penalties, this helped Baltimore way more than it hurt them. Via NFL RedZone It’s a little surprising we don’t see more of this, as there are ways to take advantage of the NFL’s rulebook to help your team out in late game situations. Regardless, Sunday was one heck of a day for the Ravens’ special teamers . ...

Vikings’ Tom Johnson to appeal $18,231 NFL fine, calls it ‘B.S.’

Source: www.twincities.com --- Sunday, November 27, 2016
Vikings defensive tackle Tom Johnson said Sunday he will appeal the $18,231 NFL fine levied against him last week for a hit on Arizona quarterback Carson Palmer. Johnson was fined for a roughing-the-passer penalty on Palmer late in Minnesota’s 30-24 win over the Cardinals on Nov. 20 at U.S. Bank Stadium. “It was B.S.,’’ Johnson said of the fine. “We’re going to appeal it and see what happens and whatever, see what they saw which actually made them fine me.’’ Johnson said he “definitely’’ was surprised by his fine. He had said after the game he considered it a “B.S.’’ call. “If you see the hit, it’s a legal hit,” Johnson said. Johnson’s hit on Palmer came on fourth-and-19 at the Arizona 4-yard line with 1:12 left in the game and the Vikings up 30-24. The penalty gave the Cardinals a first down, but Minnesota was able to hold on to win. Elian Gonzalez On Cuban TV: “Fidel Is Everyone’s Friend”

Follow CBSMIAMI.COM: Facebook | Twitter HAVANA (CBSMiami/AP) — Elian Gonzalez, the Cuban boy who became the center of an international custody battle waged by Fidel Castro nearly two decades ago, returned to the public eye Sunday to praise the leader who fought to return him to the island nation. Cuban leader Fidel Castro (L) poses with shipwreck survivor Elian Gonzalez, after presiding over a massive May Day demonstration at Havana’s Plaza de la Revolucion, May 1, 2005. (Photo by ADALBERTO ROQUE/AFP/Getty Images) Echoing the round-the-clock adulation on state media, Gonzalez said on government-run television that the Cuban leader’s legacy will long outlive him. It’s “not right to talk about Fidel in the past tense … but rather that Fidel will be,” Gonzalez said. “Today more than ever, make him omnipresent.” Gonzalez was 5 when he, his mother and others attempted a sea crossing between Cuba and the United States in 2000. His mother died on the voyage, but he survived and was taken to Florida. A bitter dispute broke out between his relatives in the U.S., who wanted him to stay there, and his father back home. Castro, who died Friday night at 90, made the issue a national cause celebre and led huge demonstrations demanding Elian be returned to his father. U.S. authorities eventually sent him back. “Fidel was a friend who at a difficult moment was with my family, with my father, and made it possible for me to return to my father, to

Scarborough: Giuliani and Conway Are Trying to ‘Intimidate’ Trump with Public Pressure

Source: www.mediaite.com - Sunday, November 27, 2016
Joe Scarborough expressed astonishment on Twitter this morning at Rudy Giuliani and Kellyanne Conway ‘s public attempts to “intimidate” President-elect Donald Trump . Giuliani is lobbying to be Secretary of State amid the talk about whether Trump would give the position to Mitt Romney . And on TV this morning––in multiple interviews––Conway was very publicly criticizing Romney , saying he “went out of his way to hurt” Trump, and even saying many people feel betrayed by this consideration. Well, Scarborough thinks this is a big test for Trump that the world will be watching him on: So Rudy tells the world what position he will and will not accept from Trump while Kellyanne attacks Trump's choices in public. Wow. — Joe Scarborough (@JoeNBC) November 27, 2016 Giuliani and Conway are trying to intimidate the President Elect. How weak do they think he is? Giants 27, Browns 13: Browns three-quarters of way to winless season after surrendering seven sacks against Giants

Source: www.ohio.com --- Sunday, November 27, 2016
CLEVELAND: The Browns are three-quarters of the way to becoming just the second team in NFL history to finish a season 0-16. They fell 27-13 to the New York Giants on Sunday at FirstEnergy Stadium to limp into their Dec. 4 bye with a record of 0-12. The Detroit Lions went 0-16 in 2008, and the Browns continue to flirt with matching their futility. The Giants (8-3) let the Browns hang around for more than three quarters but, as usual, they failed to capitalize. They have suffered 15 consecutive defeats dating back to last season. They have lost 22 of their past 23 games and 30 of the past 33. They haven’t won since Dec. 13. The Giants went ahead 20-6 when defensive tackle Jonathan Hankins beat right guard Alvin Bailey, who replaced starter John Greco when he suffered a foot injury late in the third quarter, and strip-sacked quarterback Josh McCown as he tried to throw on second-and-19 from the 50-yard line. Defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul recovered the fumble in the air and returned it 43 yards for a touchdown with 10:58 left in the fourth quarter. Robbie Gould missed the extra-point kick. The Browns allowed seven sacks and 11 quarterback hits against the Giants a week after they surrendered eight sacks and 14 QB hits to the Pittsburgh Steelers in a 24-9 loss. The Browns countered with a five-play, 75-yard scoring drive, capped by McCown’s 21-yard touchdown pass to rookie wide receiver Corey Coleman, who was wide open in the end z ...

U.N.-believable: Ban Ki-moon (and others) mourn ‘strong voice for social justice’ Fidel Castro (Sunday open thread)

Source: michellemalkin.com - Sunday, November 27, 2016
**Written by Doug Powers We’ll devote this Sunday open thread to some of the more ridiculous reactions to the death of Fidel Castro (along with whatever else you’d like to talk about). The lead-off batter is UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, who mourned Castro as somebody concerned with social justice and climate change. You can’t make this stuff up : Speaking on behalf of the United Nations, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon this morning extended condolences to the Cuban people and to the family of former President Fidel Castro Ruz, who passed away overnight at the age of 90. “At this time of national mourning, I offer the support of the United Nations to work alongside the people of the island,” Mr. Ban told reporters in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, where he is attending the Global Sustainable Transport Conference. He offered his particular condolences to Cuban President Raúl Castro Ruz. […] “Under former President Castro, Cuba made advances in the fields of education literacy and health. I hope that Cuba will continue to advance on a path of reform and greater prosperity,” the Secretary-General concluded. A statement issued later in the day by Mr. Ban’s spokesperson in New York noted that former President Castro was an emblematic figure of the Cuban revolution, prominent in Latin America and influential in world affairs. “As Prime Minister, President, Commander of the Cuban Armed Forces and First Secretary of the Cuban Communist Party,

40% of the NY Governor’s staff isn’t even on his office’s payroll

Source: hotair.com - Sunday, November 27, 2016
The Governor of New York State hasn’t been indicted for anything yet, but nearly every rock which gets kicked over in Andrew Cuomo’s vicinity seems to reveal more roaches scurrying away from the light. After a pack of his aides and associates were indicted last week by Preet Bharara, the Albany Times Union began digging into the background of some of the state executive branch staff and almost immediately turned up something interesting. One of the indicted individuals, Steven F. Aiello, has a son who is employed by the Governor as a senior policy adviser. The son, Steven L. Aiello, had been in the position for roughly a year after moving over from the state’s affordable housing agency. But here’s the funny thing… the younger Aiello doesn’t show up on the payroll roster for the Governor’s office. He’s actually assigned to (and paid by) the Division of Military and Naval Affairs. As the Times Union discovered upon further inspection, Aiello’s case was hardly unique. In fact, nearly half of the people working for the Governor were on the payroll of other agencies or “quasi-governmental entities.” Observers of state government say the practice of loading up the governor’s staff with people not officially on its payroll has been ongoing for decades. E.J. McMahon, research director of the fiscally conservative Empire Center for Public Policy, said it has quietly allowed governors to expand their staffs while escaping criticism for inc

Never Finish an Internship Without Asking for This

The MPW Insiders Network is an online community where the biggest names in business and beyond answer timely career and leadership questions. Today's answer for, "What should every college intern know about succeeding in business?" is written by Kristen Hamilton, co-founder and CEO of Koru. While reflecting on my summer and early career jobs, whether waitressing at the restaurant in my small hometown or as a marketing intern in Germany, I realize how I could have better used those experiences to fuel my future. Here are three things that I wish I'd paid more attention to: Find ing the right fit The company you're interning with is not a training program. It's a job and an extended interview. They'll be trying to figure out if you're the right fit: Are you going to perform well at the company? Many of the more innovative employers are moving away from old signals like where you went to college and what your GPA was and are now looking for the things they know set their rock stars apart from everyone else. Are you gritty? Do you stick with it when things get tough? Are you curious? Are you a quick learner? You should also be figuring out if the company is the right fit for you. Do you feel that you belong? Can you be your best, authentic self every day? If you can, you're more likely to succeed and stay. But finding the right fit isn't as easy as it sounds. You may excel at one company but struggle at another. See also: This Is an

Kellyanne Conway says she's just a 'concerned citizen' with doubts about Mitt Romney

Source: theweek.com - Sunday, November 27, 2016
While insisting she would respect President-elect Donald Trump's decision, whatever it may be, top Trump aide Kellyanne Conway on Sunday made clear in an interview with CNN she does not approve of Mitt Romney as a possible choice for secretary of state. "I'm all for party unity, but I'm not sure we have to pay for that with the secretary of state position," Conway told Dana Bash, adding, "I'm hearing from people who say, 'Hey, my parents died penniless but I gave $216 to Donald Trump's campaign and I would feel betrayed [if Romney is nominated].'" Conway made the same point speaking with NBC's Chuck Todd at Meet the Press Sunday. "Why are you campaigning against Mitt Romney as secretary of state?" Todd asked. "I'm not campaigning against anyone," Conway answered. "I'm just a concerned citizen." Why Conway is sharing these grievances publicly is unclear; she said on Twitter she has already addressed the issue with Trump in private. One theory suggests Conway uses her television appearances to influence the president-elect, who is known to be a devoted viewer of cable news. Watch Conway's comments at CNN below.

Shane Vereen Injury: Updates on Giants RB's Recovery from Triceps Surgery

Source: bleacherreport.com - Sunday, November 27, 2016
New York Giants running back Shane Vereen hasn't played since Week 3 against the Washington Redskins as a result of a triceps injury, which required surgery on Sept. 28. He was placed on injured reserve on Sept. 27 but may still return this season.   Continue for updates.  Latest on Vereen 's Potential Return Sunday, Nov. 27 NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reported on Sunday morning that the Giants are targeting Vereen 's return for Dec. 11 against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 14. Vereen Struggling to Shake Injury Bug in NFL Injuries have come to define Vereen 's NFL career more than his skills as a running back. He did play all 16 games in back-to-back seasons in 2014-15, but those are the only years in his six-year career that has happened.  Aside from those two full years, Vereen has only reached the 13-game mark one other time (with the New England Patriots in 2012). He isn't reliable enough to be used as the top running back in a system, but his ability to catch passes out of the backfield gives him good value. Given Vereen 's inability to stay on the field and this latest setback, he is best used as a spare piece in an offense that doesn't require him to do more than the minimum amount of physical activity to extend his career. Still, he would represent a major boost to the Giants' depth at running back should he be able to return to the field this season. Read more NFL news on BleacherReport.com

WATCH: Mark Ingram Goes Untouched On 21-Yard TD

Source: radio.cbssports.com --- Sunday, November 27, 2016
Ryan Mayer When looking at this week’s NFL schedule, the match-up between the 4-6 Saints and 4-6 Rams probably didn’t jump off the page at you as a must watch contest. That’s why they play the games. The Rams and Saints exploded into an offensive fireworks display with the two teams combining for 49 points in the first half. On the opening drive of the second half, Saints quarterback Drew Brees found his running back Mark Ingram on a screen pass on 3rd-and-17 and Ingram went literally untouched into the end zone. UNTOUCHED! @MarkIngram22 takes the @drewbrees screen pass to the HOUSE. #Saints50 https://t.co/misNZAQqwq — NFL (@NFL) November 27, 2016 That 21-yard reception is part of what has become a huge day for Ingram as the back has 123 yards and one touchdown on the ground to go with the receiving touchdown and the game isn’t even through the third quarter yet. Not the best display of defense by either team in this game, but, it’s certainly proved to be much more entertaining than it originally looked on paper. ...

NFL Open Thread: Thank You For Not Coaching Edition

Source: http://ift.tt/q3gEmm --- Sunday, November 27, 2016
A couple of notes on peonage ball before we get to the real thing. First, this story about how Brian Kelly “is exploring options to possibly leave the Fighting Irish program” is an absolute classic EPSN beat-sweetener. Yes, it will be entirely his decision should he decide to leave a program that is surely thrilled with his performance. And second, the OSU/Michigan game yesterday was excellent, and the while the officiating was terrible it was no worse than, say, the Steelers/Bengals playoff game last year. But the NCAA overtime system is an utter abomination. And I particularly can’t stand the “but TIES!” justification for abominations like the NCAA football OT and the NHL shootout. Yes, ties. Ties in regular season are better than arbitrarily designating a winner by suddenly switching to radically different rules. It’s a shame that a game couldn’t have been finished with proper OT that would conclude with a tie if nobody could score after a period without getting the ball automatically spotted in field goal range. Anyway, are you ready for some EXOTIC SMASHMOUTH : Mike Mularkey made some mystifying mistakes in the Titans’ 24-17 loss to the Colts. But his fake punt early in the third quarter was so daffy that he must have found it in an old file cabinet labeled “DO NOT OPEN” in Jeff Fisher’s handwriting. After Brett Kern motioned out of punt formation to telegraph the play, rookie safety Kevin Byard took the snap and handed off ...

NFL Week 12 open thread

Source: hotair.com --- Sunday, November 27, 2016
Ed: Did everyone have a good Thanksgiving? I certainly did — we hosted the family celebration this year, and I grilled up the turkey on my awesome new Solaire infrared grill, which I converted to natural gas a few days earlier. I also rustled up the turkey in my NFL picks on Thanksgiving, going 3-0 to run my record to 45-34. To make it even sweeter, the Steelers muscled out a win over the Colts, playing without Andrew Luck. But we’ll take it anyway. Jazz: Having spent Thanksgiving day on the road (except for sitting down for the actual meal) I didn’t get to watch much football. In fact I had to Google the results later in the evening to discover that I’d gone 2-1 for season total of 49-30. No, it wasn’t a sweep, but it moves me one notch further above .500 so I’ll take it. Now let’s see if I can find anything to be thankful for on the gridiron today. Ed: So we don’t have the Steelers or the Vikings for this week’s picks, thanks to their Thursday games. We’ll focus on the Jets, who welcome the Patriots ( 4:25 pm ET, CBS ), which means a tough afternoon for New York fans. The Pats score nine points a game more than the Jets, and their defense is stingier by six points, too. Pats 31-16 over the Jets. The only other game I’ll highlight here is the 49ers at the Dolphins ( 1 pm, FOX ), not so much for the football but for the unfortunate timing of having Colin Kaepernick wear a shirt with Fidel Castro’s face on it in Miami just days be ...

Examining Lorenzo Cain’s Early 2017 STEAMER Projections

Source: diamondhoggers.com --- Saturday, November 26, 2016
Ah, sweet ‘Zo Cain. The heart and soul of the Kansas City Royals. You know, we haven’t written about Lorenzo Cain nearly enough on this blog. Dude will be about 31 years old the next time Baseball is played, and he just gets too little run time here. ‘Zo Cain been berry berry good to us though. He had a little bit of a down year in 2016, followed by his best record hits in 2014 and 2015. He finished with 103 games played, a respectable .287 average (‘Zo Cain is always respectable), nine homers, 56 RBI and runs scored, and 14 steals. He finished a 2.4 fWAR, down from his 6.4 fWAR in 2015 when he was creeping into that ‘best in the game’ talk ever so slightly. We want to know what kind of rebound candidate Cain will be moving forward – to us he should be like a Torii Hunter – aging like a fine wine in many ways. We have but one projection system to look at, so lets do it. From his Fangraphs page . Lorenzo Cain’s 2017 STEAMER Projections: 144 games played (good to see), 13 home runs, 71 RBI, 71 runs scored, 19 steals .283/.338/.416, 3.0 fWAR Alright, so Steamer isn’t seeing anything here earth shattering. Just tells us that there is a very good chance in Cain’s returned health from a frustrating wrist injury – not an injury that should be taken lightly for a hitter the year following – to still being a pretty solid ballplayer. This may be a little light for one factor involved: Cain is entering a free-agent year. He’s young enough t ...

MOSUL, Iraq (AP) — When Islamic State militants in Mosul discovered that Ahmed’s brother had served in the army, they went to his house, pulled him into the street, and shot him dead as his parents watched. Now, it was time for revenge, and after two years of ferrying the extremists around as a taxi driver, Ahmed had plenty of information to offer special forces at a command post in an east Mosul apartment on Friday. “They’re in this church, and only God knows what goes on in there,” he told intelligence officers, pointing out map coordinates during a half-hour session. They met in a living room used to receive residents just a few blocks away from the battle, some seeking help, others being questioned, while the unlucky ones faced interrogation or stern reprimands for various infractions. BYU football report card: Defense shines in victory over Utah State

Source: www.deseretnews.com - Sunday, November 27, 2016
BYU's defense dominated Utah State on defense, leading to a 28-10 win on Senior Night in Provo. This was a different game than the last time the Aggies traveled to LaVell Edwards Stadium. While Utah State struck first and was able to hang on for about a half, BYU's defense put this game out of reach. Here's the grades for BYU's win over USU: Offense The BYU offense ran wild over the Aggies as it racked up 249 yards rushing over the Utah State defense. Jamaal Williams led all rushers with 131 yards on just 18 carries with a touchdown. It was good to see Williams back from injury and do so well. However, it was another rough night for Taysom Hill against Utah State as he was injured for the third time in his career against the Aggies. He didn't have a great passing game as he finished with 101 yards passing with one touchdown and two picks. Nick Kurtz was the only reciever that had more that two catches on the night. Tanner Mangum came in after Hill injured his elbow. He had only one pass, and it was for a 5-yard touchdown. While it wasn't a marque night for the offense, it did get the job done with a potent rushing attack. Grade: B Defense The turning point in this game came from the defense as Logan Taele forced a fumble that Michael Shelton took to the house. BYU's tally of takeaways continues to grow as Fred Warner added a pick. If you take away Hill's pick that was returned to the BYU 6, the defense only gave up three points o

To explore this topic further, I talked with Shreesha Ramdas, the CEO of Strikedeck, a Customer Success Automation startup based out of the Silicon Valley.

Education Association Slams Trump's "Anti-Common Core" Nominee For Education Secretary

Source: www.zerohedge.com - Wednesday, November 23, 2016
Continuing his announcements of cabinet appointees, Donald Trump said he is nominating Betsy DeVos for Education secretary - a billionaire GOP donor, she also once served as head of the Michigan Republican Party. In a statement Wednesday, Trump called DeVos a "brilliant and passionate education advocate." “Under her leadership we will reform the U.S. education system and break the bureaucracy that is holding our children back so that we can deliver world-class education and school choice to all families. I am pleased to nominate Betsy as Secretary of the Department of Education," Trump said. She is the current chairwoman of the American Federation for Children, an education advocacy group pushing school choice policies. DeVos said she was "honored" and vowed to work with the president-elect on his "vision to make American education great again." She said in a statement that “the status quo in education is not acceptable" and added that "together, we can work to make transformational change that ensures every student in America has the opportunity to fulfill his or her highest potential. DeVos could face scrutiny from conservatives over her past support for Common Core educational standards. DeVos is a vocal advocate of school choice and vouchers to allow parents to send their children to alternative schools. Clearly, those policies are strongly opposed by teachers unions, and as the president of the National Education Association

Hillary Clinton Urged to Contest Election Results in Swing States

Source: www.newsweek.com - Wednesday, November 23, 2016
Hillary Clinton is being pushed by computer scientists and lawyers to challenge the presidential election results in three key swing states, two of which Donald Trump won two weeks ago. While one member of that group said in an online post Wednesday that the results were “probably not” hacked, he advised Clinton to file for an examination of the physical evidence. Related: Trump criticized for breaking promise to go after Clinton The group believes it found evidence that vote totals in the three states—Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin—might have been affected by a cyberattack, saying the Democratic nominee received 7 percent fewer votes in counties that relied on electronic-voting machines instead of paper ballots or scanners, New York magazine reported. But the professor who posted online, J. Alex Halderman of the University of Michigan (who also directs the Center for Computer Security and Society), said the most likely explanation for Trump’s win is that the polls “were systematically wrong.” Most pre-election polls indicated Clinton would win the presidency. Trump defeated Clinton in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, and while the billionaire businessman is ahead of the Democrat in Michigan, the state’s results are not yet final. Charles Hamilton casts his vote for president on November 8 in Los Angeles. Election security experts are urging Hillary Clinton to challenge the results. Mario Anzuoni/Reuters Halderman also argued th

MLB, players have much to lose as labour talks intensify

Source: www.sportsnet.ca --- Wednesday, November 23, 2016
Relax. This isn’t 1994; there’s no way the powers that be will kill spring training, let alone Opening Day of the 2017 Major League Baseball season. The issues aren’t serious enough and the tone not draconian enough. It’s a $10 billion industry – $10 billion, 10 times what it was in 1994! – with an average salary of $4 million and thanks to the NFL caving in to its moral vacuum and a monolithic presence on the internet, Baseball is positioned to claw back some of the three decades of ground lost in North America’s sports consciousness. MLB has flourished as a regional sports product and it even has blind luck going for it, in the form of strength in major markets. Plus, the World Baseball Classic is scheduled for this spring – an event that operates as a formal partnership between owners and players. Of course, Donald Trump was never going to be president, either. What struck me as remarkable about the reaction to Tuesday’s report by Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports that owners were thinking of voting to lock out players if a new collective bargaining agreement isn’t reached by Dec. 1 is how used we’ve all become to labour peace in Baseball; how we’ve become accustomed to no news being good news just as the two previous CBAs materialized out of thin air. As one long-time, former player agent told me on Tuesday after Rosenthal’s report came out: “You’ve all gone soft. This used to be par for the course – one side leaks one thing, the o ...
