Malcolm Turnbull Slams Submarine Deal Haters: ‘Not Like an iPhone’

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has slammed those who have criticized the large amount used to build Australia’s new fleet of submarines. “A submarine is not like an iPhone that you can just buy from overseas and, if it doesn’t work, you can buy a new one,” Turnbull said in an interview with ABC radio on Wednesday. “This is the most complex, sophisticated, technologically advanced piece of machinery or vessel that will be built.” The Prime Minister stressed that the huge figure was what people have been wondering about, and he also admitted that establishing more submarines locally would have been more expensive. Turnbull is expected to sign an agreement with DCNS before the year ends. The agreement aims to guarantee jobs of up to 3000 in Adelaide and protect its place as the “center of naval architecture.” When asked why France ended up with the contract, Turnbull explained that the European country had the proficiencies that best epitomized what Australia needed, according to Sky News Australia . The Prime Minister added that a factory needs to be built before starting work on building the submarines. “That will be a few years. Between now and then we start to develop all components that go into the submarine,” Turnbull said. Turnbull announced on Tuesday that France won the $50-million deal to construct 12 submarines in order to boost the country’s future defense system, beating Japan’s Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Kawasaki ...
