COLUMBIA – Baseball is a team sport. USC center fielder Gene Cone picked up three hits,knocking in three runs in the Gamecocks 11-1 win over Appalachian State. But, for many reasons, Sunday was Gene Cone Day for South Carolina. The junior outfielder was in the middle of virtually everything the Gamecocks did in a 9-2 Southeastern Conference victory over Missouri. Cone set the USC all-time record for consecutive game hitting streak in the first inning, but didn’t stop there. By the end of the game the Columbia native was five-for-five, including a triple and two doubles. He also scored three runs and knocked in three. It marked only the second time this season a USC batter has recorded a five-hit game. The other game from Alex Destino in an 8-1 USC win over Clemson on March 4. “Gene had an incredible day,” said USC coach Chad Holbrook. “It was a special day for him, not the way he played, but breaking the school record and the hitting streak. He’s been on a great run, a very confident kid who has put his time in and has worked. It is always good to see hard work being paid off.” Not one milking a moment, Cone lined Missouri starter Michael Plassmeyer’s first pitch of the game into the right/centerfield gap. Tigers right fielder Kirby McGuire dove and got his glove on the ball but couldn’t haul it in.
