2016 NFL Draft: UA’s Jatavis Brown selected in fifth round by San Diego Chargers

Jatavis Brown on Saturday became the first linebacker from the University of Akron ever selected in the NFL Draft. The San Diego Chargers selected Brown in the fifth round with the 175th pick. He is the first Zips draftee since the Buffalo Bills took Reggie Corner, a cornerback, in the 2008 draft with the 15th pick in the fourth round, No. 114 overall. Brown, a 5-foot-11, 222-pounder from Belle Glade, Fla., earned the Mid-American Conference’s Defensive Player of the Year Award in his senior season. He was also a first-team All-MAC selection and led one of the stingiest defenses in the country with 116 tackles. He set school records for tackles for a loss in a season (20 in the 2015) and for a career (41.5). With 12 sacks, Brown also broke the single-season sack record previously held by UA and Miami Dolphins great Jason Taylor, who was selected in the third round of the 1997 draft with the 13th pick, No. 73 overall. Brown, who wasn’t invited to the NFL combine in Indianapolis, put himself on the radar of many teams with his performance at an NFL Regional Combine in Houston. He then beat many of those numbers at his pro day, where his performance put him in the top five of several categories. Because of Brown’s size, some project him as a safety in the NFL.
