The airline industry is no stranger to operational failures. Given the scale of the industry, those glitches can quickly turn into public relations issues and impact consumer perception. Most recently, Delta Airlines experienced a data outage in Atlanta that crippled its mission control center. The Operations and Customer Center at Atlanta’s Hartsfield Jackson monitors everything from its global fleet to individual crew members and passengers. Because key servers were affected, when the system defaulted over to its nearby second command center, it didn’t help. The electricity was working but the data was still inaccessible. By the afternoon, Delta was able to operate about a third of its usual flights, 2,340 out of 6,000.
