Football: OHSAA denies Massillon's appeal regarding senior star

Senior Thayer Munford will remain ineligible to compete on the Massillon Football team in 2016 following an unsuccessful appeal to the Ohio High School Athletic Association. Tim Stried, the OHSAA’s Director of Communications issued a statement that said: “Representatives of a student-athlete from Massillon Washington High School met with the OHSAA Appeals Panel on Sept. 8 to appeal the penalty previously handed down to the student-athlete. Today, the appeals panel announced it has denied the appeal and will uphold the penalty that declared the student ineligible for the 2016 season. None of the other penalties levied against the school’s Football program were appealed on Sept. 8.” The OHSAA penalized Massillon’s Football team for recruiting violations in August just before the 2016 season started. The investigation involved several Football players who were recruited to attend Massillon by its coach, Nate Moore, along with assistant Football coaches and booster club members. Massillon was fined $5,000, placed on probation through the end of the 2018-2019 school yearand Moore is suspended from coaching the Tigers in the 2016 playoffs if the team qualifies. Munford transferred to Massillon after playing at Cincinnati La Salle, a school that Moore previously coached Football at.
