Brad Rock: Former Utah State QB Chico Canales looking to put down roots in Logan, this time as a coach

LOGAN — His father was a career military man, so Chico Canales knew all about moving. He learned Football on a base in Japan when he was 10. The family also lived up and down both American coasts. So Canales shrugs about moving 10 times in 30 years as a Football coach. “Moving was not an issue,” says Utah State’s assistant head coach. “I was used to moving every four or five years. So I thought, well, I might as well get into coaching.” But as spring Football progresses, the former Aggie quarterback thinks he has found a permanent home. He only bought one house in his career but says he plans to settle in Logan. “I’d like to stay here,” he says. “It all started for me here, so it would be hard to want to leave.” After three decades of wandering, it’s only fitting that he put down roots where, long ago, Chico was the man. Michael Canales got the nickname from his grandmother. He and several high school teammates were at his house, one day after practice, when the family matriarch remarked that Canales’ long hair reminded her of Freddie Prinze in the 1970s sitcom “Chico and the Man.” “All my buddies heard her say it, and that was it,” Canales says. Though he has eventually become Michael to many, those who knew him in high school and college still use the old nickname. He played for the Aggies from 1980-83, starting his sophomore year. But an injury his junior year opened the way for Doug Samuels and they traded starting assignment ...
