What To Do When A Monster Shows Up At Work

If only Halloween came just once a year. The only thing more frightening than a monster of a boss is one who changes costumes several times a day; wonderful one moment and a tyrant the next. That passive-aggressive, Jekyll-and-Hyde character claims never to intentionally kick the dog on days that suck, right? And don’t they always have a lame rationale for the over-the-top attitude? It feels bad when you're bullied, so do you ever find yourself unleashing that same demon on others as you race to get things done? Here are three ways to harness the beast, whether it’s yours or someone else’s:

Veterans of the worlds of style and magazine editorial, the two New Yorkers founded CAP Beauty with a mission to merge the worlds of natural beauty, wellness and design. It’s been less than a year since their Valentine’s Day launch, but already the magical jewel box organic beauty store and spa located on a quiet street in the West Village (with an online retail extension that serves a global-reaching audience) is doing just that.

Microsoft will force a Windows 10 update next year

Source: www.htxt.co.za --- Friday, October 30, 2015
In 2016, people who are running Windows 7 and 8/8.1 on their PCs will be upgraded to 10 if Windows Update is set to “automatic”. This is because Microsoft will soon add the Windows 10 Upgrade option to the system update feature of those earlier operating systems, and then at some point next year change its status from “Optional” to “Recommended” ( via Engadget ). As you may know, all “recommended” Windows updates are installed automatically at 3am (or whenever your system is set to do so), so we fully expect a lot of people to wake up one morning in 2016 to find they’ve gone from Windows 7/8/8.1 to Windows 10 overnight. Particularly people who aren’t all that computer-savvy, which we think will cause much phoning of relatives for tech support. Windows Update is one of those features that a lot of computer users set to automatic and then never touch again, because it’s the most convenient way to ensure your system is always up to date with the latest security patches. Should you be resisting upgrading to Windows 10 for whatever reason, the way to make sure your system doesn’t automatically perform the update is to set Windows Update to either download all updates but ask you which you’d like to install, not download any updates at all (not recommended), or to merely notify you that updates are available and then let you choose which you want. You could also un-tick the option that says “Give me recommended updates the same way I r ...

Windows 10 offers a range of tools for sending details of what's going wrong – and here's how to use them. Click the menu button in the toolbar that looks like three dots and choose Send Feedback. Office Online set to have Skype voice and video calls built-in

Source: www.techradar.com --- Friday, October 30, 2015
Microsoft has announced some new features for Office Online, including work on Skype integration and a new Chrome browser extension. Office Online is about to get fully integrated Skype voice and video chatting, so whichever online app you're working in (Word, Excel, PowerPoint or OneNote), you can talk directly to your Skype contacts. As Microsoft notes in a blog post , this will help with seamless collaboration on documents and the like, as when you're jointly working on a file, you can quickly fire up a chat to have a discussion about any issues that crop up. Of course, instant messaging is supported as well, and the text of your messaging chat will stay connected to the document in question, so when you work on it at a later date, you'll be able to see that previous chat history. Skype integration will arrive in Office Online imminently – Microsoft says in November – and it will be coming to the desktop version of Office at some point, as well. Chrome capers Microsoft has also introduced a Chrome extension for Office Online, so users can swiftly open or create documents within Google's browser. A number of small tweaks have also been made to Office Online, such as a revamped Navigation pane and formatting improvements in Excel Online. Redmond also said that it has introduced several enhancements for the Visual Basic Editor on Office 2016 for Mac , and that the Office on Android apps have been considerably streamlined, with th ...

Use SQL Server PowerShell Provider for Fun and Profit

Source: blogs.technet.com --- Friday, October 30, 2015
Summary : Guest blogger, Mike Fal, talks about leveraging the SQL Server PowerShell provider. Microsoft Scripting Guy, Ed Wilson, is here. Welcome back guest blogger, Mike Fal. He blogged yesterday (see Getting Information from the SQL Server Provider with PowerShell ), and he continues today... In my previous post, I covered how to gather and view data for our SQL Server components by using the SQL Server provider. Gathering this information is simple, just like looking up files in a directory. Being able to grab collection of SQL Server objects and display their properties exposes things quickly and easily for PowerShell users. Using collections with the provider The fact that we are using collections is the second strength of using the provider. Collections are a key element to automation, mostly because we can use them with loops and process them as part of an automated task. We can combine this with the file system of the SQL Server provider, for example, to easily gather and process collections of databases, logins, or other objects. Let’s look at the today’s PowerTip, Use PowerShell to Back Up System Databases. We’re actually dealing with two collections here: the instances and the system databases for each instance. The outer loop steps through each instance in that array—that’s easy enough to understand. Within that, we first use the provider to create a collection of the non-TempDB system databases, then use ForEach-Obj ...

How Can Organizations Adapt To A Rapidly Changing World?

It's no secret that change is happening in every organization, across every department, and in every geography. I have been traveling consistently over the past few months and this is a topic that organizations all over the world are thinking about. What should companies focus on? People? Technology? Process? The physical workspace? The best way for organizations to think about and prepare for the future of work is actually much less specific. So before thinking about technology, freelancers, or millennials, we need to have a broader mental shift in our minds. The best way for us to think about this, is to look at our organizations less like factories and more like laboratories.

Inside Warren Buffett's Favorite Book

Let’s take it back to 1956 and 1957 to observe the original formation of Buffett Partnership Limited (BPL) by Warren Buffett, which was a vehicle he used to accumulate much of his wealth. Initially, it allowed him to take an active role in his investments in companies such as Dempster Mill, in which he installed his own management team for operational efficiency. Berkshire Hathaway Inc. Class A was eventually acquired and the partnership became similar to a holdings company which was able to provide insurance premiums that were critical in utilizing capital for future investments. Warren Buffett is better known for investing in companies like The Coca-Cola Company and GEICO, which are heavily covered by the markets and the media. Unbeknownst to many is Buffett’s deep engagement in entrepreneurial activities that provide seed capital. In today’s businesses, a CEO plays a vital role within an organization. From a valuation perspective, their strong track record will drive market confidence and make the company more attractive to investors.

Those unflattering comments have continued as Lacy’s production dwindles in 2015—67 carries for 260 yards and one touchdown in six games. Lacy addressed the rumblings Thursday, per ESPN.com’s  Rob Demovsky : I'm not the smallest person. Brandon Jacobs wasn't the smallest person. Jerome Bettis wasn't the smallest person. Some people can just play like that, not that I'm Jerome Bettis' weight or nothing like that. I'm just saying, not everybody's meant to look like Adrian Peterson or somebody like that. Lacy’s comments come in light of Packers head coach Mike McCarthy discussing the topic Wednesday, per  Demovsky . "I’m not going to get into guys' weights," McCarthy said. "I mean, I’ve never been asked a question about a guy’s weight. But I think players do get bigger in their career. But he’s bigger than he was as a rookie." The Packers list Lacy at  234 pounds , only three pounds heavier than he weighed at the 2013 NFL Scouting Combine . But a source told Demovsky that Lacy weighed in at 242 pounds early in training camp. Here is the unflattering contrast, per David P. Woods of the Score: In 2013, Lacy went on to become the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year and earned a trip to the Pro Bowl. He followed that performance up with a stellar 2014 in which he picked up 1,566 all-purp ...

Harlem Globetrotters star helps dedicate Harrisburg basketball court

Source: fox43.com --- Thursday, October 29, 2015
HARRISBURG, Pa. - Harlem Globetrotter Chris "Handles" Franklin gave a helping hand to one Harrisburg Basketball court. Franklin, along with City Mayor Eric Papenfuse, community leaders, local youth held a special dedication ceremony for the newly renovated court at 4th and Emerald Streets on Thursday. The “Coach Cam Court” is a posthumous dedication of Harrisburg native Greg Campbell, a longtime community leader and youth Basketball coach at the Camp Curtain YMCA and summer leagues in Harrisburg. Local artist, Ego Ink, painted a mural in the middle of the remodeled court to honor Coach Campbell. The efforts of Franklin will be one of many acts of goodwill made by the Globetrotters through their new initiative called “The Great Assist.” Known worldwide as the Ambassadors of Goodwill™, the Globetrotters are giving back even more during their 90th year by leaving a mark in communities across North America. "There's so much negativity going on throughout the city," Franklin said. "So, it's so important for us to go out and be that positive light and do something positive for not only for the community, but also the youth of this community." They raised money through two 3v3 Basketball tournaments, plus private donations by Heather Ross and Handles Entertainment. The Globetrotters will celebrate their 90th year in the Harrisburg area when they bring their game to the Giant Center in Hershey on Thursday, March 3 at 7 p.m. and Friday, M ...

NFL Notes: Broncos, Colts, Dolphins, & Steelers

Source: nfltraderumors.co --- Thursday, October 29, 2015
Broncos Troy Renck of The Denver Post writes that if TE Richard Gordon shows he can black and give the Broncos more flexability in two- and three-tight end formations, it’s unlikely they’ll persue a trade for a tight end next week. Should Gordon struggle, Renck wouldn’t be surprised to see the Broncos call about 49ers TE Vernon Davis , Rams TE Jared Cook or Bears TE Martellus Bennett . Colts Joel Corry mentions that QB Andrew Luck could hold off on signing a long-term deal and play out the 2016 season under his $16.155M fifth-year option, if his performance this season does not improve. Many expected Luck to sign a record-setting contract by next year, but he and the team have really struggled this season, so he could wait to maximize his value, depending on what the Colts are willing to offer. Dolphins Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald writes that the next two weeks could end up determining interim HC Dan Campbell ‘s fate. While Campbell will get 12 weeks to show what he can do as a head coach, sources tell Salguero that the Dolphins are planning to give Campbell 4-6 weeks to determine whether he can be their guy moving forward. Miami has already won two straight under Campbell, but wins over the undefeated Patriots and the Bills could go a long ways towards him securing the position. According to Salguero, the Dolphins haven’t put out any feelers to potential candidates for the job, despite the recent reports. Steelers Steel ...

Popsugar Videos Land on Apple TV

Source: wwd.com --- Thursday, October 29, 2015
Popsugar is now in living rooms. Well—it technically already was via laptops, mobile and other devices—but the San Francisco-based media company’s videos became available today on Apple TV. “We’ve been waiting for more mechanisms to getting into the living room,” said Popsugar chief business officer Jen Wong. Popsugar’s mostly Millennial user group already skews towards heavy iOS use so going to Apple TV made sense but there are also opportunities to win over new fans in the process, Wong said. “We are just eager for all of this, for more access and more ability to get our videos into users’ hands,” she added. The content’s there. Popsugar’s team of content creators produce about 150 videos monthly, filmed in studios in Culver City, San Francisco and New York, along with on-the-street filming. Content ranges from fitness videos to those on cooking, beauty and styling. “For Popsugar we want to be everywhere that our user is,” Wong said. The plunge into Apple TV for Popsugar could also pave the way for sister site ShopStyle to eventually go that route, although the conversion will take time. ShopStyle serves as a hybrid search and e-commerce company for apparel, accessories and home products. “We’re really interested in ShopStyle having a shopping experience on Follow WWD on Twitter or become a fan on Facebook . For the past three and a half years, he has been the Chief Operating Officer of Gloria Jeans, a Russian retailer that is among the fastest growing retailers in the world. Kasbe credits his rise to being a business leader first and a technologist second. He also spent a decade as a consultant to the retail industry, and as such advised executives across the industry. The Science In The Martian Is Great, But The Stuff About The Wind Is Fiction

The Martian is a great movie. As a planetary geologist, I love it. And all the great science done on Mars by NASA space missions over the last decades is fantastic, much of it used to depict Mars in this movie. But the wind on Mars, while fast, is thin and weak, and couldn?t blow a leaf and inch. The huge dust storms are extremely fine sand and Matt Damon wouldn?t even feel it if he was in the middle of one.

REI Shocks Retail World By Closing For Black Friday, Paying 12,000 Employees to 'Opt Outside'

REI, the Seattle-based outdoor recreation and sporting goods giant, announced today that it is going to close (you read that right) for Black Friday and pay its employees to go out and play.  It is a move, REI says, that's aimed at making a stand against commercial craziness in the aisles. Now I, as a customer experience consultant, would almost invariably advise my clients against closing shop for one of the busiest days of the shopping year.  Yet in this case, for reasons I'll discuss below, I think REI may be very on-trend with this brave and expensive move. (Color that highly expensive: REI says that it will be closing each of their 143 stores on one of their top-10 sales days of the year and and, as they put it, "paying our employees to head outside.”)

5 Things You Can Do To Drive Corporate Culture

Tech companies may get all the attention for creating engaging and collaborative workspaces and strong corporate cultures, but the truth is that employee engagement benefits businesses in any industry. Enerplus, a medium-sized oil and gas company based in Canada, has made corporate culture a major emphasis in the last few years, and the results have been phenomenal. Keep in mind that this is a VERY conservative industry that isn't really known for progressive ideas about the workplace. However, not only is Enerplus driving innovation and inspiring other companies across the industry, it is also attracting top talent and can see revenue stability during a tough time in the industry. I sat down with Lisa Ower, Vice President of Human Resources, to learn the secrets to Enerplus’ success and to see how the principles can be applied to any business. So-called “coding bootcamps” are a cottage industry of fast-track private vocational schools for graduates looking to enter the competitive tech industry as software engineers, data scientists, and other in-demand jobs. Many graduates hold college majors notorious for slim earnings potential (like English majors), and are now fully employed in the tech industry making a lot more money. English majors earn $33,000 more after graduation (Engineering majors earn $3,000 more, by reference). Many have no prior coding experience at all to attending the intensive programs, which average 10 weeks long and cost about $9,000 (though, they can last much longer and cost twice as much).

The Primary Reason Leaders Are Failing In The 21st Century

Many leaders are living under an identity crisis. They are uncertain about how to lead in a more diverse, transient, multigenerational environment that requires them to embrace diversity of thought – and they fail to see the potential opportunities this represents to both workplace and marketplace success. When leaders become too comfortable with a one-size-fits-all approach to leadership, they conversely become uncomfortable with the uncertainty and change that more successful leaders embrace as part of the job. Complacent leaders are at risk of becoming irrelevant because they are unable – or unwilling – to course correct their style, approach and attitude to the environment of change they must lead through.

The case for Dino Babers as Maryland's next head football coach

The Terps couldn't beat Babers, but they might want to join him. Over the coming weeks and months, the Maryland Football program will search for a new head coach to replace the departed Randy Edsall. We know who the candidates are , but who should Maryland pick? We'll state every coach's case, whether he wants the job or not, in 500 words or fewer. (Or, maybe a little longer.) Dino Babers, Bowling Green head coach Likelihood scale: 5/10 The resume A Honolulu native who grew up in California, Babers was a running back and defensive back at Hawai'i from 1979-83. After graduating, Babers took a graduate assistant position with the Warriors in 1984, before bouncing around a number of Western and Midwestern schools (including Purdue). In 1995, Babers was hired as the wide receivers, running backs and quarterbacks coach at Arizona, and he was promoted to offensive coordinator in 1998. The 1998 Wildcats went 12-1, scoring 33.8 points per game and finishing No. 4 in the AP Poll after a Holiday Bowl win against Nebraska. The next two years didn't go quite so well, as Arizona's scoring average dropped and head coach Dick Tomey resigned after the 2000 season. Babers took over the offensive coordinator position at Texas A&M in 2001, and once again saw a long-time head coach resign during his tenure. Arsenal Fined and Warned by FA over Calum Chambers Transfer

Source: bleacherreport.com --- Monday, October 26, 2015
Arsenal have been handed a £60,000 fine and warning by the FA over their future conduct in the transfer market for breaching the association's Football Agent Regulations in their acquisition of Calum Chambers from Southampton in 2014. The FA released a statement revealing the disciplinary measures, which also extend to "authorised agent" Alan Middleton for his involvement in the deal. Middleton will receive a £30,000 fine along with a three-month suspension from agency activity that will be "suspended in its entirety for 18 months from 23 October 2015 and will not take effect unless he commits an offence contrary to the agents regulations or The FA’s regulations on working with intermediaries during this time." The statement explains that " Arsenal admitted part of the breach but denied another, which was found not proven following an Independent Regulatory Commission." According to BBC Sport's Steve Canavan and Patrick Jennings , the disciplinary procedure was brought on by  the involvement of "an unauthorised and unlicensed agent." Canavan and Jennings also shared a statement from Arsenal on the matter, which read: We acted in good faith throughout in this transfer and had no reason to believe that the player's representative was not authorised to be involved in the transfer negotiations. The FA fully recognised that there was no intention to mislead on Arsenal's part. It's important to note the case represents an isolated inci ...

Chip Kelly’s Message To Team: We’re 3-4 And ‘We’ve Got A Really Good Football Team’

Source: philadelphia.cbslocal.com --- Monday, October 26, 2015
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Turn on the radio, go on Twitter, and interact with Eagles fans in Philadelphia. It feels like a complete dumpster fire. The Eagles suffered an ugly 27-16 loss at the undefeated Carolina Panthers on Sunday night and many fans are impulsively calling for the firing of Kelly. But that’s the week-by-week ebb and flow nature of the NFL and head coach Chip Kelly continues to seem unruffled. On the outside, it’s a mess. But on the inside, the message remains the same. “I told those guys after the game, I said the two things I know right now—we’re 3-4 and I also know that we’ve got a really good Football team in that locker room,” Kelly told Angelo Cataldi and the 94WIP Morning Show. “We just need to get out of our own way sometimes and eliminate the mistakes that are hurting us.” Listen: Chip Kelly on the 94WIP Morning Show   The Eagles, despite winning the turnover battle, dropped seven balls and committed seven crucial penalties in an error-filled loss to the Panthers. At 3-4 heading into their Week 8 bye, Kelly understands the frustration of the passionate Philadelphia fan base. “I think it’s frustrating for everybody,” Kelly said. “I think that this group plays with great effort, but we’ve got too many administrative penalties that hurt us.
